Summary: Best Sequel Ever!
Review: Most sequels aren't as good as the originals, but this one was great! It is about Lirael, a daughter of the Clayr, but a misfit even among her own people. No one knows who her father is and even her mother was considered a little strange. The worst part is that she is the oldest girl in the Clayr without her powers. She is so frustrated that she goes looking for trouble and eventually ends up creating her only friend- a dog made entirely of Mage marks. Later, after overhearing Sabriel and her husband talk about the troubles in the Old kingdom, she embarks on a boat trip where she meets the prince of the land.

The book ends rather abrubtly, leaving everyone yearing for the next book, to tell about the evil magic that is to come. I know that I can't wait!

Summary: Lirael:Daughter of the Clayr
Review: Yay!!A sequel to Sabriel is here and it's got all the familiar stuff from the last book:Sabriel,Touchstone,Mogget, the Paperwing, those nasty creatures from Death...it's all in Lirael! It has two lives mixed into one book:Lirael's life and the life of Sam, Sabriel and Touchstone's son. Some of the elements of being different in the story are sad,but Mogget's always there to give you a witty remark. If you read Sabriel and liked it then read Lirael.Heck, read it twice. And then you can read Abhorsen because you do want to know what happens after that cliffhanger ending, right?

Summary: Sam bites, the dead are creepy, the rest is wonderful!! 4.5
Review: first of all, don't mess with harry potter. he's FINE. this is different. a whole different world, stuffed with more creativity than most people i know could shake a stick at. lirael is a very good character, but aren't there enough of those people-who-don't-fit-in books? the main characters are very inept at what they are "supposed" to be doing...you will understand at the end. this book is good, really, don't get me wrong. i love mogget and the Disreputable Dog. the first third was really great, but...the Dead are REALLY creepy! sure, that is the whole POINT of these books, i just...eww. the bells facinate me, though. if nix didn't have such and exellent knack for description the Dead probably wouldn't bother me so much. i liked the stilken so much better! original, and i was scared nearly past the First Gate when lirael was running away. oh, no one uses the bells enough! the same thing in sabriel. sorry, i'm whining too much, THIS BOOK IS GOOD. and sameth is annoying. "oh, i can't touch the book. it's too scary. how will i ever tell mum that i can't do her job? even though she needs her healing and sleep, can't see find out that her son can't be the abhorsen???" mogget set him straight. the charter magic really interested me too. as mean as i have been, really, this book is good. really. its good. read it. be scared of the Dead. build a house on an island. you'll feel better.

Summary: THE CLIFF HANGGER
Review: Lirael really needs the reader to have read Sabrie in which Nix explains a lot of the magic behind the story. Lirael doesn't have a real ending but rather is a cliff hangger to be picked up by Garth Nix's next book in the series (and I think last) Abhorsen. This book is a must read for all Fantasy or even si-fi lovers. Garth Nix paints a wonderful setting with "dark magicand deep love"

Summary: The ultimate reader's adventure
Review: This is an awsome book, that wonderfully followed the first one with a keep you on your toes adventure. A wonderful story, about a young clare with no sight, a prince on a rescue mission for his friend, and his skeptical friend from Ancelstierre. If you read the first one the secound is a perfect follow-up, and I'm very much looking forward to the third.

Summary: A great book, but...
Review: I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to any fantasy fan, but I was a little dissapointed by a few things about it.

First of all, it is less a sequel to Sabriel and more simply a companion novel, related only because it is set in the same place. Sabriel really did not leave any story threads open on which to build a sequel. This leads me to believe that it was only the success of Sabriel that led to the writing of Lirael, which is somewhat disappointing in some way to me (though this is really just unfounded speculation, so don't take it personally if you don't agree).

Second, I hated one of the main characters pretty much all through the novel. I actually found myself skimming over parts of the story dealing with him. He was a whiny, wimpy, annoying hero, and I am extremely glad that he was not the main hero of the story. Even though I understand the benefits to the story as a whole of having him written the way he is, such as the contrast it creates against the title character, I was irritated by his large presence in the story.

The reason I liked this book so much, and the real reason I think many people like fantasy in general, is because of the setting. Well-written fantasy creates a new world into which readers can journey, marvelling at its complexities and (come on, admit it) wishing it was our own. Lirael is a novel that does not disappoint in this regard. In Sabriel, I found the Old Kingdom and the Charter fascinating, and Lirael continues to develop its details, creating new mysteries. I eagerly await the publishing of Abhorsen not for the characters' story, but for the setting's story. I am most impressed with Garth Nix for having created a place as intriguing as the Old Kingdom.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, but I caution that if you expect a continuation of Sabriel and Touchstone's story you will be disappointed.

Summary: Excellent
Review: This book was so good I couldn't put it down. If you loved Sabriel or any other Garth Nix book you will loved this.

Summary: Just as good as 'Sabriel' or even better!
Review: Lirael doesn't feel like a daughter of the Clayr. In fact as years past she felt farther and farther away from ever being one. She doesn't even look like a Clayr OR have the only thing important to her-the Sight. Even worse she was destined to save the Old Kingdom which made her yet even more farther away from where she just wanted to fit in and be like every other daughter of the Clayr. Now she must undertake an important mission with only her best friend the Disreputable Dog to help her along the way.

'Lirael' is a wonderfully done novel by Garth Nix! He has the talent of capturing you right away into this book and it's like you feel and experience everything that the characters do. I can't express how disappointed I was when it ended and having to wait for the sequel 'Abhorsen'. Garth Nix took you into a new and capturing world in 'Sabriel' and now he introduces you to new places and intrances you deeper into the discovery of the Old Kingdom. When I first started this book I thought that their was no way Garth Nix can replace any of the characters in 'Sabriel'. He proved me wrong! He adds in new spectacular characters and former characters as well. If you read 'Sabriel' and enjoyed it get this one right away! It's worth spending the extra money for the hardcover.

Summary: GREAT!!
Review: I read Sabriel only last month and was instantly hooked on Garth Nix. So when I saw this book in the book store I had to pick it up. It is years after Sabriel, and it is spoken through the points of veiw, of Lirael, and Sameth who is Touchstone's and Sabriel's son. I'm not going to give it away, but I do have to say, that the next book ABHORSEN is most definetly going to be a must read.
