Rating: Summary: This Lullaby : A Novel by Sarah Dessen Review: "I had no illusions about love... It came, it went, it left casualties or it didn't. People weren't meant to be together forever, regardless of what the songs say." Remy doesn't believe in love. And why should she? Her romance novelist mother is working on her fifth marriage, and her father, a '70s hippie singer, left her with only a one-hit wonder song to remember him by. Every time Remy hears "This Lullaby," it feels like "a bruise that never quite healed right." "This Lullaby is only a few words A simple run of chords Quiet here in this spare room But you can hear it, hear it Wherever you may go I will let you down But this lullaby plays on..." Remy always knows the perfect time to give a boyfriend "the speech" telling him it's over. She should have the perfect timing since she's had lots of experience in dumping guys. Plus watching her mother go through marriage after marriage. So what is it about Dexter that makes it so hard for Remy to follow her rules? Dexter is everything she hates, messy, disorganized, impulsive. Worst of all, he is a musician, just like her father. There's just something about Dexter. Could it be that Remy is finally finding out what all those love songs are about?
The novel starts with Remy planning her famous mother's fifth wedding. Her mother, Barbara Starr, hasn't been able to get any of her previous marriages to work but has high hopes for this one to Don, owner of a local Toyota dealership. Remy has just graduated from high school and is going to attend Stanford in the fall. In order to leave "without any attachments," Remy carefully plans to dump her current boyfriend, Jonathan, so she can accomplish her goals of leaving her home and starting a new life on the west coast with no ties to her past.
Her friends, Chloe, Lissa, and Jess, support her and her rules about love until she encounters one boy, named Dexter, that throws off her carefully structured world.
This story kept me interested. The plot flowed well, the characters were well developed, and very believable. This made me think that it was really happening, not just a made up story. The book had me hooked right from the beginning, I couldn't stop reading because I wanted to find out what would happen next. The plot of the book may seem at first like it would be very boring, like a story that's been told so many times that you already know every detail, but it is told in such a way that by the end you wouldn't recognize the idea that you had in your head of what would happen. The story is told so well that it's hard to believe that the book is really fiction. The characters make you feel like you're listening to a friend talk about her life, not reading a work of fiction.
I enjoyed this book very much, and I think anyone who likes a good laugh and a great story full of twists and turns would enjoy this book also.
Rating: Summary: "Lullaby" Let Me Down Review: "This Lullaby is only a few words A simple run of chords Quiet here in this spare room But you can hear it, hear it Wherever you may go I will let you down But this lullaby plays on..." This is the chorus to the song Remy Starr's famous hippie-musician father wrote for her the day she was born. The fact that this song says "I will let you down" makes it no suprise that Remy turned out the way she did. Remy is a bitter eighteen year old girl who is sure she's right about everything. This stubborn girl's home life is also not very structured; she's never met her father (who has since passed away), and her mother, having been divorced four times, is about to be married for the fifth. Consequently, Remy is left to take care of herself, mother, and older brother, Chris. Remy has grown up to be a cold, "know-it-all" type of person, and only trusts her family and three best friends: Jess, Chloe, and Lissa. Another effect of her mother's lack of social skills is that Remy does not believe in love. Remy has many boyfriends, and knows exactly when the time is right to give them "the speech" and dump them. Remy thinks her theories and rules of love are completely right. That is, until Dexter comes along. Dexter, a gawky musician, and Remy meet at her mother's newest fiancee's car dealership. Remy, being the person she is, is not amused with him at all. Eventually, however, the two run into each other many times, and start to date. Their ongoing relationship comes to a halt when Dexter hears of Remy's plan to have a "summer fling" and end the relationship when she goes to college. The story turns out to have a suprise ending for all. While I would possibly recommend this book to people older than me, I would not recommend it to anyone my age (13), or younger. This is simply because, in my opinion, it was not enjoyable to read. The writing was descriptive and the characters well developed, but I found the plot quite boring. Also, Remy's negative attitude throughout the entire novel gave it a very depressing tone overall.
Rating: Summary: The book that has it all! Review: "This Lullaby" by Sarah Dessen, is the best book I have ever read in my life! It's about a girl named Remy who has seen too many failed marriages from her mother to even think that love really exsists. That is until she meets Dexter, a boy that is completely not Remy's type, but why is it so hard for her to dump him? To find out why, you have to read this book! I read it in 2 days flat. It will make you laugh and it will make you cry, but by the end you will be satisfied! I'm telling you... READ THIS BOOK!
Rating: Summary: if you're a teen girl Review: ....you'll like it. It's about love, journeys, *sigh* going to college. It has lovable characters, a nice tame plot. If your standards for reading are higher; however, skip this read. it's not that original and won't keep you hooked. if you still like the romance stuff, go for francesca lia block instead. if you like the whole teenage journey thing, read White Oleander. but this one isn't worth buying.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Read Review: As a high school media specialist, I like to read many of the books I purchase for my students. I haven't been disappointed by Sarah Dessen yet! Her works are so true-to-life and easy to relate to that my students love her! In "This Lullaby," Remy experiences many of the things high school students do: boyfriends, girlfriends, jobs, parent relationships, what to do after high school, and the infamous last summer before she's off to college. I think readers will be able to relate to Remy's view on her mother's fifth marriage, her close-knit group of friends, and her feelings toward Dexter, her last loose-end that needs to be tied up before she goes to college. This book definitely kept me turning the pages and I look forward to reading more from Sarah Dessen soon!
Rating: Summary: AWESOME Review: For and teenager who has experienced the flaws of young love, this is a must read book. Remey never stayed in a realationship too long. She always knew the right words to say, and the right time to say them. Right before she felt her first romantic rush. She had lots of experience doing this, afterall watching her mother do this for years. When Remey meets Dexter everything changes. She can't go by her own rules and is falling for him. He is everything Remey hates and she dosen't know why she is so attracked to him. Remey has never had trouble of getting out before the getting gets good. So what is it that makes this realationship so different? She is truly finding out what all those love songs her dad wrote are about. The book was really good! Its my favortie of all time. The book is so good, i could read it over and over agian. I recomend it to anyone who has experienced young love, wether it went bad or not. The book will truly touch your heart. By far this is the best book!
Rating: Summary: Page turner! Review: I am a currently a freshman in college and sometimes I need a good book to read on the side just to keep me sane. So a friend of mine reccomended This Lullaby and I almost didn't read it because it seemed too "teen" I guess. But I did end up reading it and it is a GREAT book. The way Sarah Dessen writes is soo much like how us young people think. The little phrases, the attitude, everything. I could not put this book down. I took it with me everywhere to read it. And when I finished, I kept wishing there were more pages to keep going. Wonderful book!
Rating: Summary: Good in a good way Review: I am pretty sure this is the first 'romance' novel that I have ever read. Although the story is typical... dorky-boy-makes-pretty-girl-fall-for-him-by-being-persistent... it is not boring. Though the plot is predictable, the writing is fun and the author captures the attitudes of the characters very precisely.
I liked this book because I could relate to Remy, the main character, who has all but given up on finding true and lasting love. Remy is cynical having seen her mother marry 5 different men. I like Remy's no-nonsense attitude although some would say she is a b*tch.
As for cheesy teenage love stories,( have only read this one), I would say it is a good book. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a light, fun read.
Rating: Summary: Such a good book Review: I can't say enough good things about this book. The characters are desribed so well it feels like they really could exist. They are all unique and definite. As you learn more about the main character Remy you realize where she is coming from and you really want to root for her and hope things fall together the right way, even though I wanted to ring her neck at times, but this just made me connect in even more with her character . The Dexter character is quirky and great, he has such a honest and real pesonality you wish he would wander into your neighborhood. The characters compliment each other and as the story came closer to the end I couldn't read it fast enough I got so caught up in the story line and characters emotions my mind and insides raced until the closing. I highly recommend this story Dexter and his band is funny and neat, real characters and Remy's friends and family you can relate with different parts of each one. Sarah Dessen did such a great job capturing human emotions, I kind of wish there was a continuation to this story but then again I would be afraid it would spoil the whole feeling of the orignal.
Rating: Summary: a good book Review: i couldnt stop reading this book, i think i read it in one weekend, its great
