Rating: Summary: How to survive on the streets. Review: It is hard to survive on the streets of New York. There are gangs and people always getting into fights. You constantly have to be on the lookout for groups of teens and bullies. You never know when a bullet might stray your way. But, Jamal and Tito, two New York teens, who are best friends, need to cope with this life. Jamal lives with his mom and his sister in an apartment. Tito lives with his grandmother. Jamal's brother was the leader of a gang called the Scorpions until he was arrested and placed in jail. Jamal's brother wants him to take his place as leader of the Scorpions. He told Jamal to see Mack about it. When Jamal went to see Mack, Jamal said he would be the leader, but things get a little shaky after he gets a gun. Scorpions is adventurous, nonpredictable and it is an exciting book.
Rating: Summary: WONDERFUL MARVOLOUS,THE BEST OF THE BEST!!!!! Review: Scorpions is the best book I have ever read because it is realistic. the main charater is faced with problems that can happen to anyone.I think that everyone should read this book just for the fun of it.
Rating: Summary: Scorpions is a very touching book. Review: Scorpions is a very touching book. It captures the values of a family dealing with problems. Although being touching, Scorpions is a very rambled story. The author prolongs events causing confusion in some parts of the book. In any case Scorpions is a book that reminds us that no matter how bad we think we have it, there is someone who has it worse than we do. Scorpions is a book that I would recommend to anyone who is having a hard time.
Rating: Summary: Realistic Fiction is always a winner in the classroom Review: My sixth grade class, who are inner-city Dallas, Texas students, very much enjoyed "Scorpions" as a read aloud. (We will compare and contrast it to "The Outsiders" later in the year.)The novel, being realistic fiction, is well-written and unfortunately, my students could relate to the language, relationships, and gang violence. The part that was most impressive to me as a teacher, was that the novel did not necessarily have a happy ending. This prompted many thought-provoking discussions in the classroom. We worked through a Literacy Chart to further pull information regarding characters, plot, summarizations, etc. I would certainly recommend it to any intermediate elementary school or middle school-aged children either as a read aloud or required reading.
Rating: Summary: Applause! Applause! Applause! The best! Review: When was the last time you recieved a gun to be the leader of a drug gang? Would you take it for an older brother who's in jail? Well, Randy is in jail and needs five-thousand dollars to be paroled. When Jamal takes the gun, blood gets splattered! Now Jamal is trapped and can't get out. He wants to get the five-thousand dollars to get his brother out of jail. Is it worth to risk your life to join a drug gang? Only Tito his friend, can save Jamal now. Will he? Scorpions is a grrrriping story on how a boy deals with life's problems. The author, Walter Dean Myers, puts lots of deep feeling into each character. You will feel the pain Jamal feels when he is in a fight. The action is suspensefull and intense. For example when Tito takes the gun and... You'll enjoy this novel as much as I did.
Rating: Summary: This is the best book I have ever read. Review: It was about a gang. It was about two guys Jamal and Mack. Mack got sent to juvenile home for breaking a guys arm with a baseball bat. I liked this book a lot because it was about gangs and it teaches people about gangs. I thought this book was really exciting. My favorite part would be when people were getting into fights because I thought it was funny how everyone started to get into a fight after everyone else. I really liked this book. By: Jessica
Rating: Summary: THE REASON WALTER DEAN MEYERS IS SUCESSFUL Review: This book was interesting due to it's originality of talking about things happening in the inner- city, a subject hardly ever talked about in non- fantasy based script.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful book, deals with real life problems Review: Scorpions is my favorite book I have ever read. Why, you ask? The characters are vivid, there is alot of voice, and the list goes on and on. Walter knows the language of a boy from New York city like Mark Twain knew the language of a boy that livs on the Mississippi in Tom Sawyer. The Scorpions is a gang that Jamal's,(the main character) brother was in. He is now in jail and wants Jammal to lead the gang. At the same time, Jamal is having trouble in school with grades and fights. It deals with real life problems like drugs, gangs, and violence. The story teaches a good lesson and is entertaining at the same time. I highly recommend reading it!
Rating: Summary: Excellent book! Great for Young adults Review: Scorpions is one of the best books that i have ever read. The book is about two young boys who get caught up in a gang and the terrible tradgedys that occur in the gang. This book was absolutely terrific. Walter Dean Myers is a superb writer. He gives so much detial and the feeling that you are really witnessing it on the streets of New York. The book is not for the person who likes comedy in their books, although there are a few lighter moments. the book is for the young adult that loves action and suspense. this is definately a book that any young person, like myself, should rea
Rating: Summary: The scorpions Review: Eric Schimler ... The Scorpions by Walter Dean Myers is an inspiring book for kids in their teens. I read it for reading journal. This book is about a boy, Jamal, and his friend, Tito, who get themselves caught in a pickle. They do not know whether or not to join a gang, the scorpions, a illegal gang that does drugs and illegal substances like that. When Jamal gets a gun from Mack, gets into fights with Indian, and randy, Jamals brother is sent to jail and stabbed by Indian who is a gang member and doesn't want Jamal to be leader of the Scorpions Jamals world is turned upside down. The major part in the book was when Jamal met Indian and Angel and at the park downtown. It was brave how Tito stopped Indian from stabbing and probably killing Jamal. This book does not teach you a lesson but it does tell most readers how lucky they are to have a nice home and community. If you want to find out if jamal joins the scorpions or not read the book. It was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I recommend this books to kids of all ages.
