Summary: Award Winning Story filled with conflicts and heroic events
Review: This story is one of real life happenings and events. The main character, Jamal, is faced with several challenges for being a twelve-year-old boy. He lives in the crime filled streets of the inner city. Violence, drugs and poverty is nothing new for Jamal. In fact, it's beginning to become an even larger part of his life. Because when Jamal's brother Randy was senteced to jail, Randy and his friend Mack decided Jamal should take over his brothers's lead role in the notorious street gang called the "Scorpions". A violent, drug dealing gang that is known for robbery and acts of violence that was occuring all over the city.

Summary: Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down
Review: Jamal Hicks,a positive thumbs up character, explores many adventures in this book. With Jmals brother in jail after commiting murder and being with the scorpions gang, Jamal recieved a gun and got asked to join the scorpions. Jamal aimed the gun at a bully and changed his life. We liked Jamal because he joined the scorpions for a good reason. He wanted to get money for his brothers appeal. Also we liked Jamal because Jamal supports his family. He prays with his family and looks after his sister, Sassy. People should read this book because it teaches a lot of lessons. It also teaches you to never join a gang when you become a teen.

Review: This book is about gang that is called the Scorpions and how everyone is involved in the story and how everyone has there own life in it. It is also about how they have to solve their problems or conflicts in the story.
The reason I picked this book was because I like adventures in books. I would recommend this book to someone that likes adventures in stories. The type of people that they are mostly 15 to 25 years old. When I was reading this book it was not difficult for me not to stay on the book. I liked the style of writing because they had a cool accent to there character. Not many chapters ended with a cliffhanger but some did and they were good. This book was never boring to me because it was very interesting and had adventure.

Summary: The scorpions
Review: Eric Schimler
...

The Scorpions by Walter Dean Myers is an inspiring book for kids in their teens. I read it for reading journal. This book is about a boy, Jamal, and his friend, Tito, who get themselves caught in a pickle. They do not know whether or not to join a gang, the scorpions, a illegal gang that does drugs and illegal substances like that. When Jamal gets a gun from Mack, gets into fights with Indian, and randy, Jamals brother is sent to jail and stabbed by Indian who is a gang member and doesn't want Jamal to be leader of the Scorpions Jamals world is turned upside down. The major part in the book was when Jamal met Indian and Angel and at the park downtown. It was brave how Tito stopped Indian from stabbing and probably killing Jamal. This book does not teach you a lesson but it does tell most readers how lucky they are to have a nice home and community. If you want to find out if jamal joins the scorpions or not read the book. It was one of the greatest books I have ever read. I recommend this books to kids of all ages.
