Rating: Summary: Not bad.. although quite confusing. Review: Like another commenter, some of my classmates had to read this book for their 8th grade English class. We're in 9th grade now, and I chose to read this for my English assignment. I enjoyed the book, although I wasn't overly fond of it. I was quite confused, though, on what the package was, and what the story was really about, athough I understood the basic idea. If you would like to discuss this book with me, or your comments about it, feel free to email me.
Rating: Summary: The Cheese Stands Alone Review: I'm 13 years old, and read it by choice (off a list) as an assignment. I found it to be truly remarkable. It seemed to alternate between a young boy and his journey, to someone who seemed to be in a hospital or asylum, being anaylized. The voice is powerful and descriptive, and shows emotion. The young boy soon becomes the man in the hospital. The book seems to be a first person story of a boy telling his trip, over and over, and at the same time, "tapes" are played telling the readers of his past and current mental status. The settings somehow tie in together at the end, but leaves you hanging. It seems to me that one portion isn't actually happening. (The tapes because each one had a deletion date) If you like robust, suspenseful, dramatic, phsycological novels, I definitely reccomend it.
Rating: Summary: Skitzo and Freakish! Review: What was Robert Cormier on when he wrote this book?!? I Am The Cheese was not only very confusing but boring as well. We had to read it for our summer assignment. Robert Cormier's idea of a skitzofrenic male in a mental hospital was not only childish but very unprofessional. Not one of the estimated 30 of us in class could understand or care about what was going on. And the POKEY THE PIG? Hello! I expected something a bit more important! The characters Adam Farmer and Brint were the most confusing. In conclusion, I am not the only one that hates this book. I would never recommend it to someone unless I hate the person! Even then I would not be so cruel! And the denoument in the end was probably the only part of the book I actually understood! Sorry Robert! Thanks!
Rating: Summary: Essential Reading Review: I remember where I was and what I was doing as I read the last page of the book. On a subway train in Boston. I felt like the book hit me hard in the face with all its might. I wanted to cry out, to share my pain. I looked around at all the silent, bored faces. It seemd so ironic. One of the most powerful books I have ever read. It has stayed with me 7 years after having read it. Kudos, Mr. Cormier.
Rating: Summary: This book is just too confusing! Review: I don't see how they could possibly call this book "young adult". I'm 14, and I'd like to think I'm pretty intelligent, but this book is so confusing. It is constantly switching scenes, or narrators, or whatever you want to call it. You can hardly keep track of it. It's not that this book is so bad, it's just that it's so baffling. I did actually think it was OK. I like the ending, it is totally unexpected. I won't spoil it for those of you who haven't read it though. Also, I really like the title. I had to have a book for a book review at school, and I picked I am the Cheese because I thought the title was funny. I read and read and it had nothing to with cheese. Then, I came to realize that it has to do with "The Farmer and the Dell". Adam, the main character, is constantly singing it, but we don't really know why. But the song says "the cheese stands alone"... And HE IS THE CHEESE
Rating: Summary: His best book Review: Although I am partial to "Bumblebee," this is truly Cormier's greatest novel. Repeated readings just make it better....
Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Confusing Review: I read this book as an assignment for my 8th grade English class. I got wrapped up in the plot, and finished the book in about 2 hours. I loved it. The end left me hanging, but that's what I look for in a book, so everyone has their own interpretation of the meaning. Loved it, wonderful piece of literature.
Rating: Summary: No, I am the Cheese Review: Excellent book. Frightening ending. Powerful. Disturbing. I mean, finding out that running and hiding IS your life, syndicates looking for you, and learning that your dad was almost killed is scary. Beautiful. Period. On a personal note: I thought this book was going to be silly because of the title.
Rating: Summary: What goes on in his head? Review: After reading this, I do not want to know what goes around in Robert Corimer's head. The book seems to be depressing, but suspenseful. I really don't reccomend this book to someone who likes spirit-uplifting books. I have no idea how Corimer thought up the idea of a 14 yhear old boy cooped up in a confinement facility and being questioned on a series of tapes. I also see very little linkage between the tapes and the actual story at the end. If you like mysterious suspense, try this book. You'll probably get your money's worth this time.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Review: I read this book and I thaught it sucked. I dont know how that author even got it published it was so bad. It is the kind of book that gives you a migrain headache if you read too much of it consecutively. I suggest that if your thinking of reading it, think again, it suck.
