Rating: Summary: The Best of Abbey Review: A funny, entertaining, and wild romp through the desert. I personally believe that Glen Canyon Dam should be destroyed, so I found myself often saying, "Right on, man!" to much of Abbey's social commentary. His description of the desert and of the river is only matched by his description of characters like Seldom Seen Smith.
Rating: Summary: It was the best book I have ever read! Review: Wow, this book is truly good reading. For anyone that loves the outdoors or simpally hates the smell of a polluted city I recommend this book.I usually hate to read and can't get through anything longer than the title let alone a 300 page book but I finished this in two days.
Rating: Summary: What the hell - add another 5 stars in this sky Review: Maybe this book will help us some day see a clearer world view. Not holding my breath (even if it is a good idea), but the book presents us with hope for the good guys.
Rating: Summary: The absolute best book you will ever read! Review: This book is Abbey at his finest. It involves tragedy, satire, wit, and of course, Abbey humor. This book brings you on a journey with four people you wish you knew, and by the time you finish it you'll want to go do some monkey-wrenching yourself. An absolute must for every person who has been hurt watching America perish beneath a bulldozer!
Rating: Summary: One of the five best books I have ever read. Review: I read an average of a book a week, and The Monkey Wrench Gang is going to remain part of my subconscious forever. Four terrific characters in exciting chase sequences across the desert south west. One terrific ending to one terrific book. I'm an avid backpacker, camper, outdoorsman, and this book satisfied all of these aspects of my soul. I will treasure it forever.
Rating: Summary: Addicting Adventure Review: I first read this book in December 1987. I started at about 5pm one evening, got about 6 hours sleep, and finished it the following day. By the end of 1988 I had bought and read 12 other Abbey books. I now own everything published by him except his first work, "Jonathon Troy" (out of print). A genius? Read the opening of "A Brave Cowboy", he takes almost an entire chapter to describe a guy getting off his horse and cooking breakfast, and you're riveted! Ladies and Gentleman, this man was behind and ahead of his time and now he is timeless...
Rating: Summary: An excellent call to arms to save the American West. Review: One of the best books ever published. Period. End of discussion
Rating: Summary: A MUST read for anyone who likes nature and adventure Review: This should be published as a "how to" , as well as an entertainment book. I've read it at least 5 times over the last 10 years, and I have always recommended it as one of my favorites. The characters are well made, the plot is both funny and exciting - what else could anyone ask? Last but not least, this book has helped many to understand the caring, passionate side of the "Eco-warrior" - whether in themselves or others.
Rating: Summary: A pioneering book for the environmental movement! Review: Edward Abbey tells a brilliant tale of eco-warriors in the desert Southwest. This book is a must read for everyone!
Rating: Summary: Laugh Out Loud Funny and Thought Provoking Review: Ed Abbey's gang of environmental rebels will make you laugh out loud as their adventures in saving the wilderness take them around the southwest looking for the machinery of "civilization" to destroy. Like all rebels, you'll either love 'em or hate 'em, depending on which side you're on. A note to readers: If you find yourself siding with Bishop Love, you just haven't been paying attention!
