Rating: Summary: The plot wickedly twists and turns in a most exciting way. Review: Lyra and the number of other characters in the book really made the story come alive. The plot wickedly twisted and turned but was not so confusing as say "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" series. I thought it was cool that you suspected the wrong people until to late. I also thought it was cool that they don't describe in great detail any super gory deaths. It was mostly clean good action.
Rating: Summary: If anyone does not enjoy this book, they must be strange. Review: I can't possibly think ok a negative thing about this book. It can easily be enjoyed by anyone ages 10-1,000,000. It is a wonderful and complex story about Lyra Belaqua and her daemon, Pantalaimon. I could say a lot more, but I don't want to give away the story to anyone, because it is so superb. I loved this book, and could read it thousands of times. I would buy it, even if i had to pay $1,000 or more. Philip Pullman is a true genius, and deserves every possible award for this book. The sequel, "The Subtle Knife" is equally amazing. I can't wait for the third installment in the series!
Rating: Summary: Elegantly Woven Masterpiece Review: Phillip Pullman has outdone himself this time. In the this fantastic fatasy novel, Pullman weaves the plot and the characters beautifully. The elegance of Pullman's words and the wonderful charecters such as Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon. This novel is incredibaly hard to put down. This is truly a fantastic achievment.
Rating: Summary: She was looking for her friend Roger to save him. Review: It was a page turning, mind boggaling, keep you on the edge of your seat kind of story. To tell you the truth I thought the book was horrible in a way,of stealing children, but I still loved the book. I'm reading The Subtle Knife right now hope its good!
Rating: Summary: The Golden Compass is the BEST book I've ever read!!!! Review: I absolutly LOVED this book! I am a huge fan of fantasy stories, but I have never really read one this good before!! I have read it at least 3 times!! It is very interesting, and Lyra's adventures have kept me spellbound every time. Though at the beginning, the talk about the daemons is quite confusing, throughout the story you get more and more information, and it all starts to make sense. So stick with it, and you'll begin to understand.I really recomend this book to anyone who likes fantasy, action and a bit of mystery in their books!! Read it today!!
Rating: Summary: My absolute favorite book!! Review: My aunt first told me to read "The Golden Compass". I was never too interested in Philip Pullman's work so I wasn't very excited about this one. By the end of chapter one I was too in to the book to put it down! I quickly came to like Lyra and despise Mrs. Coulter and her Oblation Board. What awful things they were doing!! The fast moving plot about Lyra's adventure to the North kept me hooked till the end and all of Lyra's friends, from the gyptions to Iorek Byrnison to the witches were just about as intersting as Lyra herself. I cried my heart out at the end and had to go buy the sequal that very same day! I keep trying to convince my friends to read it (I don't know anyone else who's read it). Everyone should read it!!!! It's undoubtedly the best book I have ever read and one of the best, I think, literary achievements ever!!! Please read this book! It's wonderful!!!
Rating: Summary: Very good, but not really a children's book Review: I thoroghly enjoyed this book. The concept was original and the main character very compelling. Exciting plot. I wish I had a little daemon! The one thing that disturbed me a little was that I found this in the children's book section. Sure, the main character's a spunky little girl, but its a little too gory in places, to be suitible for young readers. (The second book had even more violence in it. It spoiled it a little, for me.)
Rating: Summary: A book that is a must read if you enjoy adventure & ideas! Review: I saw this book and from the summary, I was hooked! Phillip Pullman is a genius, weaving a storyline that is quite fascinating and exciting, making you hold your breath as you read word for word. I had chose this book for a literature group. I have found most to enjoy it, the plot line and characters and ideas are really interesting! But if you do not enjoy reading over 300 pages about other worlds and maybe a complex storyline, than this is not a book for you. Yet I would say, you have to read just something like this in your life, just once. And then maybe you will be begging for more. (SEQUEL!Then third book) This story really got to me, I lost sleep, stayed in and just longed to finish the book. AND I'm 14! Great book, great atmosphere....read it!
Rating: Summary: This book is one of my favorites and one of a kind. Review: The Golden Compass is a great science fiction novel. It explores other worlds and paralell universes. I can't wait till the 3rd book in the series comes out!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK! READ IT IMMEDIATLY! Review: I first heard about this book when my best friends started reading it. I read the first few pages and since I usually didn't read descriptive books I thought it was boring, but when I got it out of the library and got halfway through it, I was very pleased that it was detailed because it needed to be. When the book could no longer be renewed, I insisted that my dad buy it so I could finish it. Daemons, Lord Asriel, Mrs. Coulter, the Gobblers,-can you see why I got it? I especially likes the story of Lyra's parents. READ IT!
