Rating: Summary: A thrilling novel! Review: When I first got this book, I didn't read it for a while. I didn't read fantasy books then, and I still don't now. But this book was an exception. Started on a day when I had nothing else to read, it quickly turned into a 'must read' for me, and I read it when ever time permited. When I finished, I put it down with a sigh and wished it would never stop. I immiediatly started reading the sequel. 'The Golden Compass' is a thrilling novel, and even though I've reread it countless times, it's still just as fantastic and mind-boggling, as when I first picked it up. Phillip Pullman is a wonderful writer, I think it must have taken lots of creativity to come up with many of the ideas in this story, especialy the idea of daemons and Dust. I think that this book deserves the Newbury medal!
Rating: Summary: Book of a lifetime Review: The first chapter of this book wasn't too gripping , however I read the other 370 odd pages in one night! This is by far the best book I have ever read and I think the story lines are amazing. The mystery of the whole book and the fact that you become so involved with the charactures is also a reason why I liked it so much. I think the idea of haaving 'demons' is fantastic, I want one for myself! Please read this book and the next one, 'The Subtle Knife' Which is equally as brilliant and moving.
Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read!!! Review: Although I was not too gripped at the start of the book, it got better and better. From the middle onwards it was stunning- I couldn't put it down. Anyone who hasn't read it- THIS IS A MUST!!!
Rating: Summary: One of the best books I have ever read... Review: This is one of the best books that i have ever read; it was amazing. The plot was so spellbinding that I couldn't put it down. I loved how vividly Pullman described all of the action and scenery. This is a sure to become a classic, and I can't wait for the last book in the trilogy to be published.
Rating: Summary: Pullman entrances readers with his story-telling. Review: Pullman entrances readers with his story-telling. Philip Pullman has accomplished an incredible feat, writing a book that captures the imaginations and hearts of both youth and adult readers. The book's 'other world' feel is only the beginning of Pullman's incredible achievements with The Golden Compass. He also introduces lovable, mischievous characters and draws them into situations which force them to rely on every aspect of their character to survive. A masterful telling of an awesome adventure, surprising readers at every turn.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books ever written!!!! Review: The Golden Compass is one of the best books ever written! When I first started it, I couldn't put it down! What I really liked about it was the idea of having a dæmon.
Rating: Summary: Philip Pullman is the most creative author in North America. Review: In the Golden Compass, Author Philip Pullman combines fantasy with landmarks in North America. In this book Lyra is the main character along with her daemon Pantailmon or Pan for short. In this book Lyra is sneaking in to the masters conference room to hear what is going on. While she is in there, her Uncle Lord Asriel comes for a visit. While he is there, he tells the master about a thing called dust. But it is no ordinary dust. When used in a proper way, it opens gates to other dimensions. Lord Asriel is set on opening that gate. So Lyra has to go stop her Uncle from opening that gate because if he does succeed, who knows what evil will be let out into Lyra's world.
Rating: Summary: A mythical thriller with lots of magical creatures. Review: Lyra is a young, spunky girl who has grown up her whole life on the Jordan College campus. She goes through many small triumphs and defeats in her life. For example, Lyra and her friends capture a boat from an enemy's fleet, and they take off down the river only to be captured later. Over time, she starts to notice some strange events happening. After she spies in the master's room and overhears a seminar about "dust," she becomes extremely fascinated by the North, but he won't take her because of the danger. One day Lyra is forced to attend another meeting of Jordan scholars because she is the daughter of the master of Jordan College. In the meeting, she meets Miss Coulter. She is a stunning woman who offers to take Lyra North. Lyra jumps at the chance and decides to leave the next day. Before she can leave, however, the Lord decides to give Lyra a magical instrument and he won't tell her what it was but he says to keep it secret. Lyra then heads north with Miss Coulter. While all of this was going on, children all over the country have been disappearing. People were speculating that a mystical woman and her monkey daemon have been abducting children and taking them north, but nobody knows what for...This book is a great work of science fiction. It has strange new creatures and mystical worlds. I thought that it was good and very suspensful. Most of the characters are great and I really liked the part of Miss Coulter. She added a mysterious twist to the book. "There is something strange about her, when she looks at you it seems like she has complete power over your mind," Lyra says. Another character that I particularly liked was Iorek Bynersen. He has a small role, but just the thought of a giant white Polar Bear defending a small blond girl makes me smile. He has a kind of magical armor that enables him to be invincible . "Iorek must be the greatest fighter in the whole world." I found the plot of the book a little farfetched. If you are into paranormal, then this would be a good book for you. Over all, I found this book to be a decent story and a good book to read.
Rating: Summary: I loved it! Review: This book is the kind of book that I normally read, and I loved it. But you shouldn't just get the opinion from an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader, because this is a book anyone would love. I gave it to my friend to read and she is usually someone who will only read books that are historical fiction, but she loved it! If you want a book that's good enough to read over and over again, this would be the one!
Rating: Summary: Excellent. Absolutely Facinating. Review: I am a fan of Phillip Pullman's and have enjoyed most of his work. However, this certaintly is a masterpeice. He creates a story of many depths where the characters become a joy to read about. You develop such love and admiration and it leaves you yearning for a daemon of your own. I highly recommend this book. Definetly.
