Rating: Summary: Wonderful books (read the whole trilogy) Review: I was so bummed when I finished the first two books in this trilogy (because the third one wasnt out yet). They are addictive, and just great. I have recommended the set to dozens of people. Very confident you will enjoy them.
Rating: Summary: A Shallow and Disappointing Fairy Tale Review: I gave it one star because there is no listing for ZERO. I am a 37-yr old male who has been reading fantasy for most of my life, and folks, this ain't it. This is a long-winded morass of religion, attempted fantasy, and social commentary. The title should be "Lyra has a Tea Party with her Stuffed Animals, while Gyptians pull her Around in a Red Wagon." Her supporting characters zip her from trouble to trouble, and just as deftly extract her from said trouble. The daemons are awkwardly explained, and I never ONCE thought Lyra was in any mortal peril, terror, or even emotional distress. ....

Rating: Summary: Good Review: This book and the Harry Potter books are pretty similer. On both of them, the main charecter doesn't have any parentys, it invloves magic, ect. This book is sort of good. Pros: well writen, gripping story, rereadable. Cons: Teidious at some parts, many religious overtones. Overall this book is worth the money
Rating: Summary: Incredible - one of my favorites. Review: This novel has been high on my favorites list for a few years (four, I beleive) and it never ceases to amaze me. When I first bought it, I was between 6th and 7th grades, and ate it up overnight. I loved it. I think I must of read it three or four times that summer. The plot was wonderful, and as I got older, I was able to see other aspects of this book that lie beneath the plot. It's a great book for middle schoolers - it stretches their minds, while keeping a fast paced plot that will keep them interested. I can also recommend this to *anybody,* and it is not because I'm blinded by the nostalgia factor (though it does play a role in this), but because it is an excellent book. It may be a little on the strange side for some, but it really is a good read. Both books in this series are, and I hope that the conclusion to the series will be well worth the two (?) years wait. The Golden Compass, for me, is a book that I can never grow tired of. Once every few months I once more discover the magic and mystery of this book's world, and am always entranced as I was when I first read it. Highly recommended. I'd give it a 6/5 stars if that was possible. Please, read all of the books in this series - you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Intelligent writing makes this book a dandy. Review: Pullman writes for children in a way that will stretch their thinking. He challenges the reader to tackle complex notions that involve science, theology, and history. The characters have depth, the plot is riveting, and the setting is interesting - borrowing elements of different time periods.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Plot, but too complicated for me! Review: I have read this book 3 or 4 times, and I definitely appreciate how creative this book is. However, as hard as I try, I am still left in the dark about many parts of this book. I still don't really understand the concept of dust. It would have been helpful to have parts of the story told through the eyes of charachters who understood what Lyra was going through (if any of them really ever did). It is, however a great book for those who have the competency to handle complex storylines. I would suggest that anyone interested enough to read this review will try the book out for themself.
Rating: Summary: READ THIS BOOK Review: This book was weird. OK, OK, I know that is an awful description so I'll try and explain. This book is complex and well, otherworldly. It's one of those books you need to read half of it over again to get the twisted plot. It all centers around this mysterious dust and this girl, Lyra who are somehow connected. Let me just say one thing, this is not in our world. When I started reading this I thought it was and got confused. This book is deep and it is dark. It is like a storm, Beautiful to see but at the same time complex and dark. A storm is probably the best description of this well written, exciting book. It is simply weird.
Rating: Summary: Philip Pullman's Epic is Completely Powerful... Review: The book starts out with a bang and keeps riding the bullet to keep me breathless. There are daemons- variable "sidekicks" of everyone in Lyra's world. Speaking of Lyra, she is a girl who, and her daemon, have survived aliianced battles, tricked even armored bears, and has been flung into this all, with total ignorance of her destiny. So she will make mistakes... and the impact of them will be big. And we all hope she doesn't because the fantasy world of "His Dark Materials" will come crashing into a severe end- which, some of the fans are expecting. So in a word, "The Golden Compass"= orginal. And I think that anyone who appreatciates fiction should aspire to be orginal. And Philip Pullman has done just that.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: This has to be one of the best (if not the best) book(s)that I've ever read. It goes a little slowly at the beginning, but speeds up as you read it, and by the time you reach the second chapter you cant put it down! I ended up crying when deaths or other tragedies occured, wondering at the heartstopping mysterious beauty of the Northern Lights (the Aurora), and wishing with all my heart that I had a Daemon of my own. Although it can be a bit confusing at some points (I would recommend it to ages 10 and up)it is nonetheless a wonderful book. I also think that the next book in the trilogy, "The Subtle Knife" is excellent, and helped me to understand some parts of the first book too.
