Summary: An Exciting Beginning
Review: Philip Pullman's trilogy (His Dark Materials, love that title) got off to a roaring start as it follows little Lyra from Oxford to the North with the help of Gyptians, Witches, and Armored Bears. The Golden Compass is composed of wonderfully dark materials for a fantasy, and some very frightening, gory moments. It is fun to see the see the ways in which this world differs from our own and the ways in which it is the same (or how we could have been like them with minor variations in our history). Beyond all the fantasy are the marvelous characters drawing the reader forward, particulary Lyra. It is a rare treat to encounter such an aggressive hero in the form of a little girl. She truly goes in where others fear to tread and she keeps the momentum of the novel rolling along. Be warned, the ending is something of a cliff hanger so be prepared to begin the second part of the trilogy as soon as you can.

Review: This a is a GREAT book. I'd seen it before, but I 'd never bothered to read it. Then my cousin gave it to me for Christmas.( Also the 2nd one after it.) I read. I loved it.This book is the first "science-fiction" book I 've ever read. There are some gory parts in there, so little kids might not like it. But it's an all around great book. I like because the whole story is like trick because of the end when Lord Asriel kills ..... to break the barrier between the worlds. I think anybody who hasn't read this book should read it because this book will have you in suspense from beginning to end. 100% satisfaction guranteed. Trust me.

Summary: THE TOKAY
Review: This Passage I am about to write is called "The Tokay." To start this, i want to say Philip Pullman is a great creative writer. He does not over-reacts to his writing, or should I say over-doing his fantasy. This is quite believable because I am not an non-believer that says things don not happen if they do not happpen in reality. In all these years, I cannot read a non-fiction books because the authors write about facts that I, myself or other people may already know about. But I found that in fantasy is much more like a world of worlds out there instead of our earth, just plain old earth. And reading fantasy is much easier and more relaxing to just sit in a chair in real-life and open up a new world of your own and it is much like the tokay, expensive wine and just clam and steady, steady reading all the way through. And I believe all young and adult readers that enjoy reading, and really enjoy reading want to become what they call a good and experinced writer and impress others. I recommened this book The Golden Compass because I believe you will all fall in love with the girl name Lyra. And I believe I have prove to show that I am not just saying this, I believe that all readers should get to know Lyra a little even if they dont like her. I also believe Lyra helped me to think of certain things in many different ways. I thought of Lyra everyday after I read. Lyra is such a sweet girl depending on how she acts sometimes just like she is real. And you will wish that Lyra is real because it was like that I owned her a favor after I read, and I found I did own her a favor because she help me with a lot with thinking in real life and it was as if she was living inside me on the other side the whole time. It was just a matter of time till I found her. I wish one day I could really meet Lyra and her friends. Summary: A Philosophically Erudite and Fantastically Exciting Story
Review: I admit upfront that I'm a college student. I'm not supposed to be reading children's novels. But this book could only be barely appreciated my those who haven't entered high school yet. Pullman attended Oxford University and is now an English professor who writes 'children's' fantasy stories. Reminds me of Lewis Carroll. Anyway, the reason I found this story so compelling was its incorporation of religious history (in disguised form), and theoretical physics (in very disguised form!) into the fabric of the story. What would it be like if we one day discover that we can enter other universes (not so outrageous considering quantum theory)? Pullman conjectures. What would it be like if we could manipulate the souls of young children for better or worse? Pullman conjectures. It's a believable story with well-rounded characters and fascinating fantasy. I can't wait to read book 2 of His Dark Materials.

Review: I'm 13 years and I love reading. But I only started loving it when I first read The Golden Compass. Lyra lives in a univers of fantasies where daemons run through the streets of Oxford and London, where a strange type of dust makes children know secrets that adults would give anything to know. The Golden Compass is the first part of the trilogy His Dark Materials, the beggining of a fantastic adventure, created by Phillip Pullman. Lyra's friend, Roger, disapears and desperate she starts searching for him. What could have happened to him? Who's behind all the strange things that are threatening children? How to fight this strong and eivl force? Lyra answers these questions to discover the mistery that involves the disapereance of Roger. At the cold climate of the North, Lyra finds terrible obstacles. Bears in armors and witches dominate the area. A misterious woman that has a monkey as daemon dedicates her self to terrifying experiments. Even sorrounded by dangers, Lyra never gives up, she'll go anywhere to find Roger, even if she has to go beyond the limits of the Planet.

Review: You know those books that your friends read and won't stop nagging you until you read them? Well, this is one of those books. In fact, TWO of my best friends would not rest until they were successful. And this time, I'm really glad I listened. The Golden Compass is one of those books that catapults you into the world that the characters live in. Before the first page was through, I myself was wandering through the halls of Jordan College with Lyra Belacqua and her daemon, Pantalaimon. From Oxford to Svalbard, I was with Lyra every step of the way. Lyra Belacqua is one of those girls who is SO curious that it gets you in trouble. She hides in the Retiring Room of Jordan College, where she hears about a mysterious particle called Dust. Lyra is catapulted into a mysterious, magical struggle between two strong forces. Lyra is determined to make everything right, and along the way, she finds out information that had been hidden from her, that makes this battle even more important to her. I would reccomend this book to anyone and everyone who loves a good fantasy/science fiction book with just a tad of reality. Like my friends were nagging me, now it's my turn to nag you. This is one of the best books around, so it would be in your best interest to sit down, get comfortable, and read one of the best books of all time!

Summary: Enjoyable, Thrilling, all that and more!
Review: The Golden Compass to me, is a fantastic book.Why?It's incredibly interesting,thrilling, and the best thing about it, has a lot of suspense.It also is great because sometimes it just happens that you think that you know what's gonna happen next and then you read something so amazing that it proves you wrong!I have read the second book, The Subtle Knife, and I am waiting for The Amber Spyglass to come out in paperback. I highly recommend this book.
