Summary: Phenomenal
Review: I haven't finished reading the second book, and already it isn't as good as the first one. What could be?

Lyra is the sort of girl few authors bother to write about, especially in the Fantasy genre where authors prefer to engage in whole epics centered around pouty princesses or busomy baronesses. Lyra is both ordinary and astonishing, in that she captures almost perfectly the personality and imagination of real children. She does extraordinary things that no real child would have the opportunity to do, but every little girl secretly wishes she could. She is not negated for being female, or treated as if she was made of sugar and spice and other bland things they call nice. Instead, she is most willingly made by her creator into a creature of daring, adventure, and brains -- much more accurate ingredients for the making of a little girl.

Three cheers for Lyra! That all female characters could be as full of life as she is!

Summary: Read this book now!...
Review: Astounding... on a scale from one to ten , it would be a twenty. THE GOLDEN COMPASS follows Lyra and her inseparable daemon, Pantalaimon, in a world apart. a daemon is an animal that is connected to you and it can change what animal it is until you are an adult. They have many struggles, lose friends, uncover lies, and discover many secrets about her family and relationships. Phillip Pullman's books are sience- fiction/ fantasy and they pull you in, transporting you to the other world. Although the book is timeless, there are elements of the contemporary world. For example, Oxford College is an important part of the world. It is a mystifying book with some surprising and sad parts.

His book is about truth and lies, and about how truth triumphs- most of the time.

Lyra's life long friend Roger is snatched up(or gobbled up as the case may be) by the Gobblers (scientists who cutt off peoples deamons) to get his daemon. Lyra sets out to find him, with obsticales like death constanly moving toward her. People help her, but most of the time they betray her. Lyra is stubburn but loving, Roger is loving and playful.

For ages eight to 800, if you like good books you will like this book (especialy if you like sience- fiction/fantasy).

Although THE GOLDEN COMPASS is the best of the trilogy (in my opinoin) because it is the least gory and the easiest to follow, they are all wonderfully, richly written. The
other books in the trilogy are: #2 THE SUBTLE KNIFE, and #3 THE AMBER SPYGLASS.

A must read, first on the summer reading book list.

Summary: Spell-binding
Review: This book is literally impossible to put down. It is beautiful, gripping, heart-breaking and adventuresome, just to start. Lyra is a heroine's heroine, and the plotting is simply breath-taking.

Summary: Kicks off to a great start
Review: THis review is possibly somewhat jaded in the fact that i have read all the proceeding books in the trilogy as well, and i shall be reviewing this novel with an eye to knowing what is going to happen.

As the start of the trilogy, you will find no more worthy a novel. The characters are drawn so well, they are so human and you care about them incredibly much. The settings are brilliant. It switches around the world, Oxford, the North, with speed, yet you hardly notice the transition. Pullman's writing is strangely lyrical and superbly evocative. THis is like reading a big long poem packed full of humanity and plot.

Pullman also creates really good subsidiary characters, Serafina, Iorek, Lee, etc. And the battles in this book (and the follwing ones) with the strange creatures, only serve to send this trilogy further down the "Classics of the genre" road, to stand alongside The Lord of the Rings, and other such works.

He has been compared to being on a par J.K. Rowling. (No professional reviewer would have the nous to proclaim him as "better", sadly)

That comparison is nonsense. He really is far far better. The writing is better. The book has much more depth. The characters are more interesting and varid, and the plots of each novel are not so repetative.

the ending of this one really leaves your mouth watering for the next.

Summary: A Wonderful Fulfilling Book For All Ages
Review: I am 12 years old and I absolutely love this book! I was so hooked on it! It talks about a 12 year old girl named Lyra who goes on a life threatening adventure. This book has such fantastic imagery that I could actually see them in my mind. When I was reading this, I felt as if I was part of thier adventure. I would defintley recommend this book only if you don't get nightmares, 11 or older, and love adventures. If you start reading this book, trust me you won't be able to put it down. I also have to say that this book is much better than the Harry Potter series. So read this book and the following series and enjoy your ride.

Summary: Not just for fantasy lovers...
Review: I am more of a 'classic literature' lover, and when it comes to fantasy, I generally stick to the very classic classics, such as "The Last Unicorn" and "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, but I was completely drawn into and fascinated by this book. The story of Lyra Belacqua and her not-quite-like-our world where she is drawn into a fight for what she thinks is to save her friend, but we learn is much farther reaching. Although classified as a children's book, there is much more to keep an educated adult entertained. The concept is very complex, and, if you read it while thinking, can bring up issues about God, religion, science, human emotions such as loneliness and the will to be individual, and, of course, the ongoing battle between Good and Evil. This book also made me want a "daemon". Read the whole trilogy!

Summary: My second favorite book ever.
Review: The Amber Spyglass is a very exciting adventure. Pullman is one of the greatest authors that ever lived. In His Dark Materials series, The Amber Spyglass is the best. When Lyra and Will go into the land of the dead, to find Lyra's friend, Roger, they discover a way to free all the ghosts forever. They find the creator and set him free from his prison in clouded mountian. This book would be liked by anyone who likes science fiction and fantasy.

Summary: In The Top Ten Of My Favorite Books.
Review: The Golden Compass is a thrilling and exciting adventure book by Philip Pullman. On Lyra's adventure with a small object called the golden compass, she tries to find her father, who is being held by armored bears. This book is very good and I think you should read it, exspecially if you like science fiction and fansasy.

Summary: A very captivating book for fantasy "lovers"!!!
Review: This is a very exquisite book for anyone who enjoys fantasy books. Philip Pullman really captured the suspense within this edge-of-the-seat novel. He describes every action in the book very vividly and stunningly. The story is shrouded in mystery until the very end, where you will be amazed at the breath-taking conclusion of this one out of the other three books in one of Philip Pullman's best thrilling series. You will be fascinated by this awe-inspiring serie and the realistic moments in this book will leave you daze for eternity. If you do not read this book, you are missing out on one of the most unsurpass book of the year.

Summary: The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
Review: This book was Ok. I would compare it to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, because, unlike the first book in many trilogies, you can be satisfied after reading the first book. I don't mean to say that you should only read one book, because the The Golden Compass leads you into the world of Philip Pullman's dream-filled creations. The way Philip Pullman writes makes this book go very fast, but you can still grasp the adventure. I would suggest this book for fantasy and sci-fi fans alike.
