Rating: Summary: The Realization of Rape Review: I gave It Happened to Nancy a five star ranking because it was a really good attention-grabber towards teenagers. It is a book about a girl whose name is Nancy. She is only 14 years old. One day she went to this concert with a group of her friends called the "gaggle". At the concert she has an asthma attack and goes to stand in the back of the room by herself. This is where she meets the other main character "Collin." She invites him over one night and before he leaves he,unwillingly in her case, rapes her and leaves her with the HIV virus. It is a true book based in diary form, giving a good description on how rape is and the realization of how AIDS kills. The purpose of this book, I think, was to get teenagers to be aware of what sex and "love" can do to them. I would and will continue to recommend this book to every teenager because I think they should all read this book.
Rating: Summary: It Happened To Nancy Review: This book is a total tear jerker. On the back of the cover it reads, "Reading this true story may save your life." It is very true. This book teaches teens and their parentsto be more aware of the incurable disease. I would rate this book a five. I never got bored with this book. It is an excellent real life example of what can really happen to you, especially if you have the idea, "Oh, AIDS can never happen to me." The main character in this book, Nancy, shows you what it is like dealing with AIDS in your social and physical life. A must-read for teenagers, especially for the young teenage girls. An important, sad lesson which everyone needs to be taught.
Rating: Summary: Real Review: Even though this book was in the young adult section of the library it didn't at all stop me from picking it up, reading it and touching my heart.Nancy, a teenager, was date raped by an aquainctance and contracted HIV, she was a virgin at the time of this happening to her. Less than a year it turned into full blown AIDS and ravished her body. This book is her diary, from before and during her bout with AIDS. It shows how she still tried to be a teenager, but she had to grow up fast to help try to tackle this disease. What touched me the most about this book is that her family and friends were very, very supported and did not treat her like an outcast. I recommend this book to parents that have children that can even read and comprehend a story like this one. My sons are 9 and I would like them to read this book. It will be apart of my collection.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: It was so sad to read about a typical teenage girl who fell for an older guy. I discussed this book with my friends and we all agreed that if an older guy was giving us the time of day, we would fall for him. What girl wouldn't want an older boyfriend? That's what I thought until I read this book. When Nancy met Collin who was four years older them her, she fell in love with him. Though I would find it suspicous that I could never go to his apartment, I thought the story he told her was very convincing. When he raped her and gave her the HIV virus, her life went into a downward spiral. In her last few years of life, you follow her through touching and embarassing events, as well as many sad ones. I never cry when I read books or watch movies, but this one got to me. I recommend this book to any teen of pre-teen girl. I stayed up until 2:30 on a school night to finish the book because I could not put it down! This book really makes you realize how precious every second of life is.
Rating: Summary: opinion of an 18 year old Review: The book It Happened To Nancy was an excellent book. I really enjoyed it. After reading this book even though the main character in it is only 14-16 throughout it, I think that the book is good for all teenagers to read. I think that they can still relate because the issues like rape and AIDS is something that can effect them too. The only thing is that it is good for pretty-much just teenagers because kids under 12 I think are too young to be reading such an emotional story. Also because of the fact that it is a 14 year old girls diary, people who are much older than a teen would not relate to the book as well just because of the way that it is written. The plot in this book was really good. The story is about a girl who gets raped by a boy she trusts and he gives her AIDS. The plot is good in this book because it stays steady throughout the whole book. They don't just trail off and then you don't end up finding out how certain situations turn out, they tell you everything that happened but they leave out all of the boring things that don't have to do with the plot of the book. The only thing was in the book the characterization wasn't to good in this book. There was good characterization of the main character because she is the one telling the story, but you hear a little about her close friends and things that they do sometimes, but you never really find out very much and so it really leaves you wondering about what they are like. One thing that is important to be warned about is that you will probably cry through parts of this book, I know I sure did. Parts of this book are just so sad with all of the troubles that Nancy has to go through when dealing with AIDS. I loved this book and many other books edited by Beatrice Sparks and I suggest reading them all especially this one.
Rating: Summary: Touched my Heart and Soul Review: When I started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. This book had many emotions in it. I would cry and laugh and cry and laugh. The way that Nancy deals with her illness just amazes me. It's real. This is the most touching book I have read in my life. If you like books that are real and have to do with life, then this is just the book for you. I will remember this book forever. I have learned to appreciate life more by just reading this book. I think you will too.
Rating: Summary: READING THIS BOOK COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE Review: IT HAPPENED TO NANCY IS THE BEST BOOK I'VE EVER READ IN MY HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. IT IS SO SAD AND IT REALLY OPENS UP YOUR EYES TO THAT BAD THINGS CAN HAPPEN TO YOU. I WOULD DEFINATELY RECOMMEND THAT ALL TEENAGERS READ THIS BOOK. IN THIS NOVEL THE MAIN CHARACTER, NANCY, CONTRACTS THE HIV VIRUS, WHICH EVENTUALLY KILLS HER. THIS NOVEL IS HER ACTUAL DIARY OF HOW HARD IT WAS FOR HER FROM THE POINT SHE DISCOVERED SHE HAD AIDS UNTIL HER DEATH. THERE IS NO WAY THAT YOU CAN READ THIS COOK AND NOT COME AWAY MOVED.
Rating: Summary: A wonderful, touching book about an unfortunate event. Review: It Happened To Nancy is one of thoes books that makes you cry, laugh, and yell at them when they do something wrong. After reading this I realized part of the reason that my parents don't want me to date until I am 16. The day I finished it, I suggusted it to all of my friends. I hope that this will help people be aware of what is going on around them. It helps others know all the pain and suffering that some of those innocent victoms have to go through. It also shows that they can lead a normal life. I loved reading this book, and I couldn't put it down. I read it everywhere; in the car, in bed, at my grandparents house, and even when I was waiting for my mom to finish shoping. I recomed that you read it for yourself to see what a wonderful book it is.
Rating: Summary: But is the Story TRUE? Review: Ready for a book that you CANNOT put down? Then read this, but dont be as naive as 'Nancy' was to believe this is a true story. Nancy was left with AIDS after she was raped by 24-year-old Collin. Be ready for an intensly sad story... But is it a REAL story? While reading it, be sharp for details that don't quite match, like a South-Carolina girl saying the people 'qued' up in a line (you know, that British word). For of us who keep diaries, don't we all write (at 12:01 pm) "The beginning of a future that is going to be more glorious than has ever nbeen known by mankind since the beginning of the earth...as well as the othger creations of infinity." And isnt it a little ironic that the LAST ENTRY EVER from Nancy is --> "I hope there is another ME, except ME"? Sounds like the author was preparing for a bang ending. One more thing to remember: Go Ask Alice 1971 Jay's Journal 1979 It Happened to Nancy 1994 Almost Lost (Story of a Homeless Teenager) 1996 Annie's Baby (Story of a Pregnant Teenager) 1998 How convienent Dr. Sparks found detailed diaries of 'hurting' teens, sometimes two years apart from each other. And it's extra convienent that Dr. Sparks is able to follow these teens and write some journal-style novels such as Treacherous Love: The Diary of an 'Anonymous' Teenager and publish in mass markets. Perhaps Beatrice Sparks wrote IT HAPPENED TO NANCY to follow the sucess of GO ASK ALICE. Even if she did, it is an suspenceful and saddening novel/true story.
Rating: Summary: I t Happened to Nancy Review: The book It happened To Nancy is a very eye-opening, touching book. In this book, a fourteen year old girl, Nancy, is raped and then diagnosed with AIDS. This book shows you the ups and downs of the disease and also a lot of facts about the HIV. This book is based on a true story, which makes it even more real. On the back cover of the novel, there is a quote: 'reading this book may save your life.' I truly believe this now because the book made me realize AIDS is out there. Although, this book is very sad, it makes you have a 'WOW' feeling; it's really intense. I f you want a book that is too good to put down, then I would really recommend this book to you. Overall, I would give this book a ten.
