Summary: Not as good as Speak
Review: I enjoyed this book, chosing it because of my love for Anderson's popular novel, Speak. Speak will always be my favorite, but Fever 1793 was enjoyable, compassionate, factual and interestingly historical. Just a note, the reviewer "Katie" on April 29, 2003 may have read the book wrong or perhaps had a different edition than me bacause her facts were wrong. Mattie did not have a brother, in fact she was an only child. And her grandfather died because it was his time, of causes unrealted to the fever and dod not die fighting off the burglars.

Summary: GREAT!
Review: Mattie Cook lives in Philadelphia with her mother, grandfather, and housemaid. When the yellow fever epidemic gets out, and takes her mother, Mattie and her grandfather are to leave town, to a "safer" one. But, Mattie & her grandfather are denied entrance to the town, because Grandfather is falsely diagnosed with the fever. Left out on the road in the countryside, no where to go, no food, Mattie takes yellow fever. To find out what else happens, you'll just have to read the book! It was amazing! Read it, love it!

Summary: Wow! What a book.
Review: Mattie Cook is just a normal ten-yr.-old girl living in New England. Little does she know that in the 1793 her life would be dramatically change when yellow fever hit her town. She lives with her mother, brother, and grandfather. When her mother catches the fever Mattie must take-over and care for her family as well as keep up the coffee house. Then her mother disappears. She wanted to leave so that she would not give the fever to her two lovely children. Mattie is determined to go and search for her. While on the long and hard journey Mattie and her brother catch the fever. Her brother manages to pull through. Then she returns home. The first night back she decided to leave the window open in hopes of some of the heat leaving the coffeehouse. Unfortunately some robbers decide to take advantage of the perfect opportunity. While in the process of trying to fight them off her grandfather is killed. Now she is all alone and still has to take care of her little brother. She decides to go and stay with a friend. She will not go to the orphanage. That would be too risky. Besides, the orphanages were all ready packed with children whose family died during the fever.. Will she be able to survive the rest of the fever? Will she ever find her mom again? This book is a great piece of writing! It will keep your attention while at the same time informing you about a interesting event that happened in 1793. I t is very true, yet it adds just a hint of action to the story. This is most definitely a Historical-Fiction book. And a great one at that!

Summary: Maybe the best book I have ever read!
Review: This book helped me to better understand the time of the Yellow Fever. Back then doctors didn't even know about germs. They thought the disease was in the blood. People tried everything they could to stop the Fever but nothing worked.
In the beginning of the book Matilda (Mattie) complains about the hot summer days and having to work in the Coffee Shop. At the end she learns that you just have to deal with death and she ends up very well.
I loved this book. I would recomend it to anyone who is interested in learning about different times.

Summary: A good attempt, but falls short
Review: This book was a nice, basic historic novel that read like the plot was outlined by a 5th grader. Every twist and turn was very predictable, and overall, it felt like it should have been a short story, but the author was compelled to add more words, to fulfill some publisher's quota. Palls in comparison to speak. It's hard to believe they were written by the same person.

Summary: Fever, More like homesick
Review: A Review by Alexz

This book is about the yellow fever dieses that swept across Philadelphia Pennsylvania in the year 1793. It is also about how it affected a little girl named Mattie, aka Matilda. Not only her, but he Grandfather, a revolutionary war veteran, and her mother, a pig headed, hard working loving mother. These three characters own a coffee shop on the outside part of the town. When Mattie's mother catches Yellow fever, she decides to send Mattie out of the town to live with a friend who owns a farm outside of Philadelphia. But the journey is much too long and dangerous for just a little girl. So her grandfather decides to go with her. Mattie and her family need to survive until the winter when the coldness will kill of the illness.

One out of many things that I didn't like about this book is that a good chunk of the book is taking place outside of the town. There where so many possibilities of action adventure and story that could take place in the market or a friend's house, or even in the coffee house! Another thing in a list of bad things is that the story seems to drag on a lot, like between chapter 10 and 15. All those chapters have to do with the same thing. They needed more storyline or interesting events. Just about the only thing that I did like about this is that the grandfather character. He is both comical and wise. He brings the only life to most of the book.

I would recommend this book to someone who enjoys life like stories. Someone who likes to read about events that really happened. But caution is advised, you WILL lose interest. Over this entire book was dragged out and dull.
