Rating: Summary: The Fight To Stay Alive Review: Fourteen-year-old Mattie Cook in Fever 1793 has a mind of her own. She wants to grow up and run the Cook Coffeehouse in dusty Philadelphia. But word of fever threatens her dream. And with her best friend dead and her mom dying what is she to do? As the cemeteries fill with fever victims, and yellow flags are raised to signify a death, men come down the street yelling, "Bring out your dead!" Mattie learns that there is a bigger fight than frivolous dreams, the fight to stay alive. Laurie Halse Anderson has managed to roll fear and panic into one terrific book, of an extreme level of suspense. Some parts are exciting like when she finds a thief in her house and some parts are sad like when she loses someone dear to her. Others are in between. She describes things in a way that in real life they would actually happen. My favorite thing about this book is that Yellow Fever was actually real! It was carried by a small fly. This book would be recommended for 10 year olds and up. It might be a little challenging for younger children, and anyone else I hope you will like it a much as I did!
Rating: Summary: fever 1793 Review: I loved this book because it pulled you into the story to the point that you don't want to stop reading it and you don't want it to end. One other thing is that it is really detailed with words it always keeps you on your tipetoes and always got you trying to guess what going to happen next. And the words draw a real good grapic picturefor your mind and it makes you feel like in the book with the chareters. The worst part in the book is when her grandfater dies because he was the one that always took care of her and whacth over her and after he died she had no one to talk to she was all alone. In yhe book the words where really vivid to me because they drew a perfect picture for me like how all the house where borded up and always seemed dark and how the town use to look lioke befor the town got hit by the yellow fever. And it showed what happened to the family after every thing had happy it was the perfect ending
Rating: Summary: Fever 1793 Review: This book, Fever 1793, gruesomely depicts the life of 15-year old Mattie Cook after the fever began (and before). This book takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride through all the horrendous events of the fever in this small, Victorian-age town. In the beginning, Mattie is an immature girl who doesn't appreciate life's values. As the book progresses, she is faced with hardships and new responsibilities. While all this is happening, Mattie is seemingly infatuated with Nathaniel Peale, her neighbor. He seems to feel the same. As more and more people die of fever, including Mattie's grandfather, who she was close to, Mattie becomes more and more mature. She goes on various adventures to different places, since her home is quarantined. This is a fun book to read, and ends somewhat happily. The book has historical facts in it that are very accurate, such as how fever spreads and in what period it started in. Additionally, there is an information section in the very back of the book telling the background of the story. This was a book I couldn't put down from beginning to end. I read all of it in a few days. I recommend reading this book.
Rating: Summary: Fever 1793 Review: "Fever 1793" is a book written by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book has a character named Melinda that goes by the name of Mattie. She lives with her mother and grandfather, they run a coffeehouse together, which they also live in. At their coffeehouse they have one other worker besides themselves a friend of the family name Eliza. This book deals with the struggle that Mattie's family goes through when there is an out break of fever in Philadelphia. Mattie's mother make her leave town to go out to the country with her grandfather so she will not catch the fever.I enjoyed many parts of this book. One of the parts being how Mattie takes care of her grandfather and her mother. It shows how much she loves them. Also, it shows how life was back then when there was an outbreak of some sort. It shows how bad things got. This book is great! I would recommend this book to young adults probaly kids ages 13 and up.

Rating: Summary: Riveting and Relevant Review: Not a staid, stiff historical tale! Instead, Halse delivers a fiesty, fierce heroine who will keep modern teens interested. This novel brings history to life in the best way. It encompasses mother-daughter loyalty, class issues, politics and romance without sparing the gruesome details of the plague. I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Katlyn at Richview Middle School Review: The main character is Mattie Cook. She is around 15 years old and lives and works at the Cook's Coffeehouse. The setting is in Pennisvania in 1793 around August to December. The plot is a girl who has no idea where her mother is and she had to watch her grandfather die. Then finds Eliza who she worked with before the dilemma and they helped the people in need. The climax is when Mattie was on her own in the turned over town. The resolution is when frost comes and Mattie reopens the coffeehouse for business. Then her mom comes back to help the family business again. I liked this book because it was a well written and intresting book. I'd tell my friend they we be inspired that they can do anything they set thier mind to. The book expresses how it feels to go through hard times and to me tht is a good book.
Rating: Summary: An Astonishingly Terrific Read Review: An Astonishingly Terrific Book When I first picked up this book, I was a little apprehensive about reading it. This all changed when I read through this excellent historical fiction tale. It is about a girl named Mattie Cook who lives in Philadelphia in 1793 during the large yellow fever epidemic. Before the outbreak, she is an everyday girl who is not very mature yet and doesn't spend her time as she should, trying to get out of chores and listening to her mother. Her life changes forever when her mother becomes ill and Mattie's life turns into a rollercoaster ride. Through the fever, however, Mattie learns about how precious life is, and grows up to be able to make choices on her own and be a responsible young woman. This is by far one of my favorite books, which I could read over and over again and recommend to any young adult or adult.
Rating: Summary: Fever, may be deadly, but a beautiful book Review: The golden days of 1793, you NEVER would know what was going to happen, you could be dead or alive. Will you be dead in a day? Mattie was a small girl that didn't have many friends. She lived with her mother and her grandfather. Her father died before she was born. Mattie always wished she could have seen him, just once. Mattie lived on top of a coffee house, which her family owned. Her mother, her grandfather and Mattie worked there. Around this time , there was a fever going around; very deadly, and very serious. Will Mattie and her family get the fever? I would give this book a 4 out of 5. This book was easy to read, and always wanting me to read more. Almost like the shark attacking me like in the book, "Old man and the sea". "Fever" was a wonderful book. It was a very serious book. If you like alot of comedy, then this isn't the book for you. This book is the book for people that love to read, or maybe just a person that loves history. Laurie Halse Anderson the author, has great writing skills with the words just rolling off the end of your tounge. Just like pottery. It was a great flowing book. Never the less there was only one thing that I would change. Laurie Halse Anderson could of made the book longer.
