Rating: Summary: Emma Speaks Review: LYDDIE Katherine Paterson Lodestar Books 1991 Lyddie lived in a small cabin with her two sisters Agnes, who is 4, Rachel, who is six, her brother Charles and her mother. Her dad left her when she was little. Her Mom thinks the world is going to end, so she leaves and goes to her sister's house taking Rachel and Agnes with her. Lyddie and Charles stay home so they can try to work off the debt that their father left on the little cabin. They couldnÕt, so their Mom sent Charles to a mill and Lyddie to Cutler's Tavern to earn some money. Lyddie worked at the mill from before dusk till dawn as a maid. Then a lady came in and noticed how hard Lyddie worked, and said sheÕd be great in the factory in Lowell. After a while Lyddie goes to Lowell. She stays in a room with three other girls. She works hard and gets paid, but one day she comes down with a fever. When she is leaving for work she thinks the overseer tries making a move on her, and she stomps on his foot and runs out. Everything starts going downhill from there. ÒHe stopped her and made her wait until everyone had gone-just when she must lie down or faint, he stopped her and put both his fat white hands heavily on either sleeve, dragging his weight on her arms. He was saying something as well, but her head was pounding and she couldnÕt make it out. What did he want with her? She had to go. She had to see Rachel. Her whole body was on fire. She needed a cool cloth for her head. Let me go! She wanted to cry. She tried to pull back from him, but he clutched tighter. He was bringing his strange little mouth closer and closer to her fiery face.Ó (Paterson,129) I thought this was a great book. I would recommend Lyddie to anyone who wants to read about a strong hearted girl. It was a great book about a girl who works hard and never gives up. By Emma
Rating: Summary: Lyddie Review: Lyddie is an exciting story in which 12 year old Lyddie is confronted with many difficult times and put through many hardships. After she tires of the work her mother gives her to do in the tavern, she goes to Lowell, Mass. to work in the textile mills. While there she loses her family to different causes. Even though I'm a boy, I enjoyed this book. If you want to learn about the early and middle 1800's or just want a good book, I would highly recommend this one. I read this book for a school assignment.
Rating: Summary: This was a great book. I recomend it to everyone! Review: This is a good book if you like to read about slavery, and tough times, or the 1800's. It is about a girl who's father leaves the family when she is very young, leaving her mother alone to raise 5 kids by herself. 13 year old Lyddie and her age 10 brother Charlie are sent to work for some people who the father owed debts to. They are sent to two differant places, ao they can't visit often. Lyddie decides that she is going to go to the mills and work for money so she can reunite her family.
Rating: Summary: what a wonderful story! it warmed my heart. <3 Review: my grandmother found this book on the side of the road, and gave it to me. i'm not much into historicals, they've simply got too much fact, and not enough fantasy. but this tale of the determination of a thirteen year old girl fighting her way through life to do what she thinks is right warmed my heart to her plight. i am 18 years old, and once considered myself above the realm of "young adult literature." but i truly enjoyed this book, spent hours absorbed in the pages. the characters, though mostly archetypes, still have their own life and charm. and some of them will down-right surprise you! i even felt pride in them when they did something right. i would recommend this book to anyone who has a passion for reading a well defined, character-driven story.
