Summary: A creative tour de force for our day and age
Review: May I gush for a moment about Nancy Farmer? Please bow, one and all, for the premiere sci-fi children's author of the day. The successor, to my mind, of Madeline L'Engle with a hint of Mildred Taylor for flair. She won me over initially with her extraordinary "The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm" and reeled me in completely with "House of the Scorpion". In this, her latest offering, the moral implications of cloning and the drug wars are brought to terrifying extremes. And yet who knew that organ farming could be so readable? The main character, Matteo, is followed from his very conception to the age of fourteen. The book does not, surprisingly, dwell too closely on the nature of existence and Matteo's own appearance on the globe. Instead, it chooses to simply lay out a world in which the drug lords of South America have created their own land and laws. The book abounds with interesting characters and ideas. Though I found it odd that member of the Alacran clan would openly despise their leader's clone before him, there are few missteps in this powerful novel. That it was a Newberry Honor Book impresses me especially. Some parents will undoubtedly find the depictions of violence that spot this book (and they do certainly crop up at regular intervals) too much for younger children, just as older kids will adore the gorier details. Like "The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm", this is a wordy tale. It is 380 pages in length and it feels it. And truthfully, the first false climax, when Matt escapes the land of Opium, seems as if it should be the end of the book, only to open up into a whole new story. I would be very interested to know if any teachers have read this book to their students. Just the same, consider this book highly recommended and Ms. Farmer a master of wordplay.

Summary: Wonderful Book
Review: I thought that The House of the Scorpion was engaging and really wonderful to read. I don't normally like science fiction, but this book really kept me interested in the plot and didn't wander like a lot of science fiction does. I recommend this book to anyone who loves to read!

Review: Nancy Farmer is my favorite author and this is my favorite book. Couldn't put it down. More than intregue, this book has a consciousess raising effect that seeps in. The story is riviting. Highly recommended for adventurers of all ages. I'm 54 and usually only read non fiction. However, when Farmer publishes a book, I read her tales. Enjoy!!!

Summary: Chilling
Review: This is a book about a boy named Matt, who is a clone living in the future. He is the clone of a drug lord called El Patron, who is the ruler of a country named Opium, on the border between the USA and Mexico, where opium is grown using eejits, which are humans that are brain-dead and follow a computer chip. The plot focuses on how Matt learns the truth of his existence and trys to escape from it.
This book felt too real to be fiction. It's interesting, and the plot unfolds itself in a satisfying manner, but it's not the type of book you want to read before going to bed. It touches on a number of controversial topics, and some people may find this rather too intense. However, it's a great read. I couldn't put it down.

Review: It is terrible they talk about killing.

I thought it would be interesting because it was at my school bookfair and the title sounded neat but as I read it seemed to be about putting people down.

Summary: Excellent Science Fiction
Review: When my 6th grade son decided to read The House of the Scorpion and do a book report on it, I read the book. I LOVED IT!! The book is wonderfully written. I don't usually read sci-fi because the characters don't seem to have any feelings, and the story is usually so far-fetched. This sci-fi book had wonderful characters whom I fell in love with, and a wonderful plot. Matt is a clone of a powerful drug-lord, El Patron. This book is about Matt's discovery of being a clone, the discovery of the loathing many people have for clones, the love he is showed by some people in spite of being a clone, and how he escapes being used as "spare parts" for El Patron to live longer. Excellent read! I highly recommend this book. I even bought it in Hardcover for my other children to read when they are old enough.
