Superb characterization, excellent dialogue, and a gripping, well-developed plot make these books great. BUY THESE BOOKS. BUY YOUR FRIENDS THESE BOOKS. BUY YOUR RELATIVES THESE BOOKS.
Rating: Summary: Witches, Wizards and Warlocks Review: At the moment the world appears to be Harry Potter crazy and yet I think there is a far better series of books just waiting to be discovered by todays children.Don't get me wrong, I love Harry Potter but Susan Copper has depth and elegance in her writing that is hard to top. Although the series was written about 30 years ago it is still fresh and full of magic. I was introduced to it as a shy 10 year old library monitor it primary school. Since then I have hooked my younger brothers and friends on the series and when my niece is old enough I will give it to her. The books are about the merging of two worlds, our world and the world or magic and legend. The main character is a young boy called Will who discovers on his eleventh birthday that he has a gift, one that will be a times hard to carry. If you love Harry Potter, read these books, starting with the Dark is Rising, they are well worth it. My only question after all these years is where are the movies? The time is ripe especially with the sucess of Harry Potter!
Rating: Summary: How do I love these books? Let me count the ways. Review: First of all, how can I possibly fit all my feelings for these books in this measly space? I read Over Sea, Under Stone when I was about seven, probably, and though I didn't quite understand all of it, it was impossible not to love. The Dark is Rising is much better than the first, though, because it delves far deeper into magic and legends than it, and has a rather more likable hero. The Drews are a bit too dull and ordinary for my taste. Also, The Dark is Rising had some nifty poetry, which is excellent to recite during boring parts in Math. My favorite book in the entire series though, was The Grey King. It is so magical, wonderful, has such great characters, and deals with Wales, one of my favorite subjects. All I can say is, read these books immediately. THey are the best gateway to fantasy, myth and legend anyone could hope for.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Review: I was eight when I first read "Over Sea, Under Stone" and the memory still burns strong in my memory. It was the book that turned me onto the wonders of reading and I have not looked back since. Thankyou Susan Cooper.
Rating: Summary: Susan Cooper Review: What a Gem. I can't believe that after almost 20 years I'm writing a review of these timeless character pieces. Susan Coopers novels helped me learn the meaning of courage as a child and I hope to pass them along to my family as well. The thread of fanasty is so much more easliy read than Tolkien, and such a vivid tapastry of legend and personal imagination. I feel that they are as worth while as "the Lion, the Witch and the wardrobe" for building everlasting beliefs in what is good and right.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully writen and a wonderful plot. Review: I've read the first three books from the local library and all I can say is WOW. It is WONDERFUL! It's kinda like Harry Potter, too. But BETTER! I may be a little kid, but I DO have taste, no? I talked my grandma into buying this for me!
Rating: Summary: A gateway to a lifetime of bibliophilia Review: I was 10 years old when I first read *The Dark is Rising* on assignment from my 5th grade teacher. It was the first true novel I ever read. I remember being drawn into the beautiful world of Arthurian legend made modern and accessible to a young boy. I read and re-read the book and the others in the series. Now I'm 28 and a physician. Susan Cooper's books (very worn and dog-eared) still sit on my shelf, along with the hundreds of others I've purchased since. I credit my love of reading to this wonderful collection and to the teacher who introduced me to them. Truly one of the best gifts I've ever received!
Rating: Summary: The words have never left me Review: When the Dark is Rising, Six shall turn it back, Three from the circle, Three from the track. Wood, bronze, iron, Water, fire, stone, Five will return and one go alone. I am 32 now, and first read The Dark is Rising when I was 11. I am now buying the set for my 9 year old daughter. I can still remember the poems better than any I learned in class. The writing is so multi-faceted, so defined. Like Will being the seventh son of a seventh son, and Merriman Lyon being Merlin. Although I applaud JK Rowling for the way she has turned kids onto books with Harry Potter, this is far, far better, and was ahead of its time. If Susan Cooper had had the marketing clout that JK Rowling has, this book would be better known and more widely read. In a time when Celtic music and influences are at their height (think River Dance, the Corrs) these books are in their prime. As an adult, read this series before giving to a child. The magic and the writing will never leave you, they are truely classics. Start with The Dark is Rising, and read Over Sea..... as a prequel afterwards. Equally suitable for girls or boys.
Rating: Summary: TRUE GOOD VS. EVIL Review: THIS WAS THE FIRST (SERIES) OF BOOKS I EVER READ IT BROUGHT YOU THROUGH A WONDERFUL STORY OF G. VS. E. WITH DYNAMIC CARACTERS THAT JUST MATURE FURTHER THROUGH THE DIFFERENT BOOKS. SUSAN COOPER, BROUGHT IN OLD ARTHURIAN LEGENDS, MADE HER OWN RACE OF IMMORTALS BEYOND IMMAGINATION. I REALLY LOVED IT.
Rating: Summary: The best children's series you didn't read! Review: This is a fast paced, high action multi-layered series not for the feeble minded. It is no accident the one of these books is a nNewberry winner and another a Newberry honor. Cooper deftly weaves history, Myth and fun into a strong collection of stories. The best part, unlike most series, is that each story can stand on it's own, but together--Wow! younger readers might not appreciate all of Cooper's nuances, but on a subtle, subconscious level the appreciation is unmistakable! The advanced reader will be challenged by forgeign locations and historical Myths. Read them and you will believe.
