Rating: Summary: Truly Unique Review: Ms. Cooper's work remains quite extraordinary. Each time I read her novels, I find myself amazed at the richness of the narrative. Each book authentically considers issues of virtue, hope, and the role of myth in society. Although comparisons to authors such as Lewis or Tolkein are made far too frequently, Ms. Cooper truly warrants such praise.
Rating: Summary: STILL REMEMBER IT AFTER 15 YEARS Review: I read this series when I was in high school and am now 33 with a child of my own. I ordered this box set in hopes that he'll love it as much as I did in another 10 years or so. I simply loved this series and have been trying to find it ever since to avail. I highly recommend this for any young person who loves Arthurian, fantasy type books.
Rating: Summary: Certainly not just for children . . . Review: These are glorious books! My younger sister pestered me and pestered me to read them when I was in my teens, but by then I was far too cool ;) It was my loss! When I finally consented to read the first one, just to get her off my back, I was hooked. I read them all, literally a book a day, until I was finished. I am now a Junior in University, and an English major to boot, and this series still ranks among my favorite books. Susan Cooper has created a masterpiece of childrens' fiction that all adults should read.
Rating: Summary: This series is very creative! Review: I absolutely adore Susan Cooper's THE DARK IS RISING series! The first book is a little slow, but after that, everything is just one big, amazing storyline with creative characters that you can learn to love . . . or hate. Susan Cooper is an amazing woman, and everyone should read her works.
Rating: Summary: One more flower on the May-tree. Review: This series needs no further praise, but I can't help myself. It's a classic coming of age story with engaging, lifelike characters, bittersweet plot, and beautiful descriptions. I first read it at Will's age; I'm now 29 and it still reads well. The power of these books has never left me. They planted a seed that grew into a lifetime love of Britain (and an English major!) and of heroic legends. I hope someday to be as fine a writer and storyteller as Ms. Cooper.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: I have read many fantasy books and Susan Cooper's are among the best. Her books are extraordinarily well written --- with remarkable detail and texture. No one should mistake them for mere children's books. Like Tolkien before her, Susan Cooper creates a story for young and old alike. With her books firmly grounded in Celtic myth, I look forward someday to introducing my children to them. I only wish there were more than five in the series.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! 5 OF THE BEST BOOKS I EVER READ. Review: In these amazing books of adventure, imagination and courage, a boy, Will, learns that he is the last of The Old Ones. He must fight with the Light and protect the earth from the evil Dark. He and some mortal friends search for magical objects that will help the Light in its battle. Recommended for boys and girls.
Rating: Summary: A series that will enhance your imagination forever... Review: I was required in 6th grade to read The Grey King in our reading class. Ever since then I couldn't get enough of the entire series. I have purchased many volumes as I came across them in used bookstores and garage sales as a child--hoarding them so that I could loan them out to others and let them share in my experience. Now as an adult, I can hardly wait for my children to reach the age that I can introduce them to THIS series, as well as NARNIA, and eventually DUNE. I still have the compulsion to check every bookstore I go into, whether or not they carry this series, just so I know which ones to patronize. Thank you Susan Cooper...you gave me permanent fond memories of 6th grade.
Rating: Summary: Enchanting series! Review: The Dark Is Rising sequence is one of those rare children's series which will delight you regardless of your age. I first read these four books as a nine-year-old, and found myself completely drawn into the world of the Light and the Dark. Since then, my copies have grown quite worn--I have re-read them time and time again, and I have lent them out to friends and family. No one has ever disliked them, and I still cherish these four books as among my favorites.
Rating: Summary: If you liked Wrinkle in Time or Narnia... Review: Susan Cooper's series is a masterpiece of adolesent literature. The classic elements of romance, good vs. evil and magic are all there in a masterful stroke where there is no word wasted. It combines Authorian legend in a modern setting. The story proceeds in a fashion that always leads on to the final confrontation of good and evil. Great!
