Rating: Summary: best series I've ever read! Review: I read all of the "Dark is Rising" series and they are my favorite books. They are real page-turners and keep your mind in the lands of magic that they take place in. I think that everyone should read these books. My favorite book in this series was The Dark is Rising, but all of the books are great and I strongly recommend them.
Rating: Summary: Excellent childrens series: still read as adult Review: This is the best series of children's books I have ever found. I read the first (Over Sea, Under Stone) as a young child and only learned of the series in college. I have read and re-read all of the books. They are distinctly British (as I am), but enjoyable for everyone. The stories revolve around the eternal battle between dark and light, focusing on events from the age of King Arthur, but set in modern times.
Rating: Summary: One of the BEST series I have ever read--suitable for ALL Review: I know that this series is aimed at young adults (I myself started this series when I was in 4th grade) but I truly believe that this series is the sort that you can read whether you're 16 or 66. I already wrote a review about THE DARK IS RISING (one of my favorite books of all time) but I just had to comment about the entire series. This series led me into the world of Celtic myths and fanned my already-present interest in the Arthurian myths. Because of reading this series, I went out and devoured almost every book on Celtic myths that I could get my hands on. I constantly borrowed the books out from my local library until I finally got my own copies as a gift, in the boxed set (thank goodness I got it before the publisher ran out of stock!). I've started a list of books that my future children will HAVE to read. on that list are A WRINKLE IN TIME (L'engle), Robin McKinley's books, and most especially Susan Cooper's DARK IS RISING series. This is a wonderful, wonderful series.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic Review: I first read this book 5 years ago. I still love it. I reread this series over and over again when I get the chance. Everybody should read it!
Rating: Summary: A SERIES FOR ALWAYS Review: I read this series to my children; then they devoured it for themselves as they grew old enough and fell in love with it. Now I'm purchasing it for my grandchildren. In my mind, it ranks right up there with C.S. Lewis' Wardrobe series. Very empowering to use modern concepts!
Rating: Summary: Enthralling, intelligent, magical. Review: I first introduced to this series 18 years ago in a program for gifted readers. Since then, I have read them dozens of times and bought them for many friends and young relatives. Unbelievably more intelligent and deep than 99% of current books for young adults (and not so young adults). The Authurian myths and the never-ending battles between Good and Evil are just as spellbinding and current today as they were decades ago. Anyone who likes Lloyd Alexanders Prydian Chronicles will cerainly love this series.
Rating: Summary: An exciting introduction to Arthurian legend Review: I first read these books in jr. high, and still reread them on a regular basis. It was through Susan Cooper that I first began to have an understanding of who King Arthur was, and I've been a fan of Arthurian legend ever since...
Rating: Summary: Literature for all ages, and a wonderous journey Review: I love this series. I read it for the first time some 15 years ago, when I was 10. I loved it the first time through, reading each book voraciously. Each time I read the series again, I find more and more reasons to love it. I would suggest, however, that parents may want to start their children with The Dark Is Rising, rather than Over Sea, Under Stone. It is a better story, with better characterization and a much more involving plot. I am about to introduce my husband to one of my favorite series of books - this one.
Rating: Summary: Truly magical books for a lifetime Review: I first came upon Susan Cooper's "The Dark is Rising" series when I was about 9 years of age. I purchased each of the volumes at different times, and the dogeared and worn status of the books in my possession are a testament to how cherished they are. I'm 20 now and I still reread the books whenever I have a chance. They are truly magical - each time I reread the series I find myself completely absorbed. The most amazing thing about this series is no matter how old you are, whether 9 or 90, it is a perfect fantasy story. It is intellectual, mythological, metaphorical and deep enough to warrant study by literature students in university, yet magical enough for younger readers too. It's not everyday such a wonderful fantasy novelist comes along. I just know that if I were stuck on a desert island and I could only choose one book, this series would be it.
Rating: Summary: You must read these books! Review: I didn't discover Susan Cooper's books until I was a college student, interested in myth and folklore. They're vivid, thrilling, and unforgettable. Any imaginative child (or adult) would love them. Thank you, Susan Cooper, for your wonderful books.
