Rating: Summary: Picked up on excitement quickly. Review: I really liked the "Dark Is Rising" sequence. My favorite book from the sequence was "Silver On The Tree". I'd recomend the sequence for children as well as adults;very fun to read. Each ended with much excitement; each chapter leaves you wondering.
Rating: Summary: I would like it to have more excitement Review: I liked these books but there were a few dull parts in the beginning of the "Dark Is Rising" and "Over Sea, Under Stone". If there were a few more adventures I would recommend them more.
Rating: Summary: It has all the essential elements of a good book! Review: I'd say that The Dark is Rising, for lack of a better word, is perfect. It has all the essential elements of a great book. It has mystery, confusion, magic, neato stuff like that. I recomend this book to ages 10 & older. It seems like you could read The Dark is Rising without having to read the first book, Over Sea Under Stone. It is a great adventure, and I hope Poeple will continue to read it for years to come.
Rating: Summary: I just can't say enough!! Review: When I first picked up a copy of The Dark is Rising, I was in sixth grade. I am now a senior in high school and I still can't stop reading the series! It's great that adults are also reading these wonderful books and getting caught up in the fascinating world of Will Stanton , Merriman Lyon, Bran Davies, and the Drews, among others. No matter your age, go out and buy these books. They will make a lasting impression. I will always and forever be a devoted fan!
Rating: Summary: The Dark is Rising Sequence are the best books ever!! Review: The mix of old welsh legend, every day, and magic is wonderful! Susan Cooper creates a world so real and magical that I could not stop reading the books once I started. There is never a dull moment and the suspense made my want to never stop reading; if I had to, the next chance I got I continued to read. The characters are super and she really brings the legend alive! Fantasy and non-fantasy readers alike will love this book!
Rating: Summary: A complex and engaging new spin on Arthurian legend Review: Cooper skillfully uses elements of Arthurian legend to craft a completely original story arc, which has moments of humor, joy, and sorrow. It's a ideal read for middle readers who enjoy fantasy, and a good stepping stone to even more complex series such as Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."
Rating: Summary: An unoriginal pastiche Review: An unoriginal pastiche of Enid Blyton, C. S. Lewis and Mary Stewart. Every cliche you can think of about children on holiday in Cornwall getting involved with Merlin etc. Go to the original authors if you want a good original story. Here the cliches come so thick and fast it reads like an unconscious parody.
Rating: Summary: One of the Best Fantasies Review: I first read the Dark is Rising sequence when I was about ten. The characters and the worlds absolutely fascinated me; Cooper shows that a world of magic and wonder might dwell right among us in our ordinary world. Cooper, C.S. Lewis, Tolkien and Lloyd Alexander were my four great reads, and all four of them I reread today. The writing itself is beautiful, not so hard that a child might have trouble reading it, yet poetic enough to make your heart sing. To get a sense of the tone of the series, all you have to do is read the two poems before each book. I've had them memorized for years, and they capture the flavor of Cooper's world. Definitely recommended to anyone, no matter the age.
Rating: Summary: My compliments to the author of this wonderful series! Review: I first heard about the Dark is Rising Sequence several months ago and decided to read it. I'm so glad I did. These books, with there colorful descriptions and many interesting characters, have become some of my favorites. I would recommend them to any fan of the Chronicles of Narnia or the Tolkien books.
Rating: Summary: A captivating series... Review: I first read this series as a youngster and have been looking for it in bookstores ever since! I'm well past the target age for Ms. Cooper's works, but her stories are so well written there's no reason not to put them on my bookshelf next to the Mercedes Lackey, Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Robert Jordan. Good characterization, cross-over of people from book to book, and it leaves open the possibility of seeing some of them reappear in more books? One can dream...
