Summary: "Bud Not Buddy"
Review: As I read "Bud Not Buddy" by Christopher Paul Curtis it made me think more about the lives of young boys during the early 1900's. Page after page I would be up close squeezing my pillow wondering what will happen next. "Bud Not Buddy" is filled with adventures Bud takes on and day after day something new is happening and page after page is something new. I would recomend this book for children and adults of all ages and would garinty a likeing of the book.

Summary: Sweet and Sour
Review: 'Bud, Not Buddy' can be summed up in about three words; sweet and sour. The book had its sweet, heart-touching moments, as well as it sour, slow-moving, no-brained moments. The relationships between Bud and the people he meets are intracate and sweet, it's things like this that keeps young book-readers from being fully immersed into repetitive book series. Few books still exist where you can sit down and completely involve yourself into it. When I was reading 'Bud, Not Buddy' I started it doubtedly, thinking the concept was thin and the plot was even more shallow. But then I read the first chapter. I progressed to the next, and in one night, finished the book. That was not because it was simply written, but because it was beautifully written. Despite a few moments where the plot becomes flimsy, this is a brilliantly written book, with endless creativity and spunk. Another literary pleasure from this talented author.

Summary: soulmates over time
Review: Bud, and Ellen Foster are soulmates! Having taught kids for 30 years, this is the type of realistic literature that makes READERS.

Summary: shucks, it's REAL GREAT
Review: i really loved this book. i think it is one of the most positive and insightful books that I have read, but there is still humor. the characters are round and believable. Bud is smart, but not too smart to be unbelievable. This book is SO much fun to read out loud

Summary: delightful, heart-warming story
Review: This is the feel-good, hurray for the underdog, farfetched kind of story we all need now and then. Bud, not Buddy is a tough little guy with a heart of gold, enthusiasm and stamina for any adventure life throws his way. There is uncertainty as he gets into one dilemma after another but always a kind person to help him through. Nearly every page will bring a smile to your face and the last few may bring some joyful tears.

The perfect, happy ending is such a delight and reminds me of the more innocent children's chapter books I was reading 30 years ago. I do love the tough, real-life books available now and tend to read those as a rule, but a book like this, as well written as it is, is a welcome change once in awhile.

Summary: This book lives up to its hype
Review: I and my family found ourselves spellbound listening to a Chicago-area NPR station interview with Christopher Paul Curtis. He spoke passionately about remembering the past and honoring our elders, and I remember thinking that it was too bad he is writing children's books. In spite of the book's connection to our Grand Rapids locale, I was still not interested ... but when the book took the Newbery award, I knew it would be worth my adult time ... it truly is. The novel is well-crafted, the characters have depth, and without being bleak Curtis manages to paint a picture of America in the desparation of the Depression. I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to read this book. I also recommend this book to anyone who is old enough to have heard Depression stories from their parents and grandparents ... it reawakens many long-buried anecdotes and might send you scurrying back to Grandma's house for one last cookie and story session that you will cherish for the rest of your life.

Summary: Great Young Adult Title; High Interest
Review: I was fascinated by Christopher Paul Curtis at the recent NCTE convention and I couldn't wait to read his latest release, Bud, Not Buddy. I was not disappointed! This fun read came even more to life after hearing about the lyrics from the novel credited to the author's own young daughter as her first attempt at songwriting! This book will be great for a read aloud or individual title for upper elementary through high school students.

Summary: Read it to/with your kids
Review: I recommend reading this book with your children or grandchildren or students. It creates a stark, vivid picture of this six year old orphan's situation and how he deals with life. Just enough humor to keep readers from getting depressed. The book could lead to discussions about race relations today, how life is for kids in foster care, or dealing with loss of a parent. Bud is a believable little character: wise, but not beyond his years, and willing to learn and share his learning. I found this a wonderful book for adults as well as children.

Summary: A wonderful read-aloud!
Review: I read to my 7th grade students every day of the week, and Bud, Not Buddy has been a hit with them. The book certainly has humor, but it also has very emotional scenes which obviously touched my students'hearts. The only thing I don't like about this book is that it will be difficult to choose a read-aloud to follow it!

Summary: Bud, Not Buddy is...AWESOME!
Review: Bud, Not Buddy is a great book for kids of all ages. (And Adults too!) It kept me reading up until the very last page. It is about a boy named Bud and his journey to find his father. Read it, you won't regret it!
