Rating: Summary: Everybody's an expert Review: I have read this book each decade since it was published. My reading of the book evolves with me as I age and hopefully mature. When a work of art can help ground a person in the craziness of modern life it is a classic. As I age, I treasure the rereadings and my deeper understanding. I now discuss this book with my teenage children. I am always amused in reading these reviews to discover that nobody@nowhere.com knows more, and thinks their own opinion is the last word in literary criticism. I may not like, or enjoy, a particular book, or a piece of music or art, but I respect those who consider such material an essential creative work of the 20th century. I dont write "This book stinks....I hated it....it should be burned." That would only show the world my own narrow-mindedness and lack of a broader perspective.
Rating: Summary: The Best Review: I have read this book every summer for the last three years (I'm 19 now), and it is amazing. Everything about it is great- the best book I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: Magic of the Catcher Review: I have read this book many many times and it is fascinating to read the reviews of the fortunate who are reading it for the first time. The first time I read The Catcher in the Rye was 40 years ago (I was 14 at the time). I was home pretending I was sick so I could have a day off school, and read it on the recommendation of my English teacher (... one of those rare teachers we somehow connect with). I remember the day vividly. I read it in one sitting. I read it transfixed. I could see myself (or wanted to see myself) in the words and experiences of Holden Caulfield. I remember feeling changed after finishing the book. Holden had parents but they were wonderfully unimportant. Holden talked of phonies and hunting caps in ways that strangely made sense of the people and the things of my teenage years. I revisit Holden periodically and the magic is still there (though I will never capture the original magic ... thankfully).
Rating: Summary: A BOOK THAT GETS BETTER EVERY TIME YOU READ IT Review: I have read this book many, many times and each time I enjoy it even more. Brilliant writing, this book is a classic for a reason.
Rating: Summary: My favorite book..even though I have read it 748,199 times. Review: I have read this book numerous times. Although I am only 18, I can grasp the concepts, feelings, and thought the author was trying to display. I enjoyed, and found it humorous that the teenager who hates everything is scraping curse words off buildings and keeping his little sister, Phoebe amused. What a caring person and an excellent book for teens to become "interested" in reading.
Rating: Summary: 20th Century Classic Review: I have read this book several times throughout the years and also have given many copies to friends. Salinger did not want reviews on his book. So no more comments. Just read it.
Rating: Summary: The most realistic portrayl of adolescent discovery ever. Review: I have read this book three times, and it still remains as one of my favorites. Holden Caulfield is such an incredibly lovable character, and getting to know him was amusing. His sense of humor is great, and the way he stereotypes people and hates 'phonies' made me laugh. It was such a wonderful book and I thought that the language added to the flavor and style. It was to the point, and very vivid. I loved it.
Rating: Summary: The Catcher In The Rye is THE book to have in your bookshelf Review: I have read this book time and time again, I am still taken away by it. The book is a new lease of life, it shows that there is always someone worse off then yourself. I am only 15 and i dont really like books that much but this is an exeption, it is brilliant. Holden Caulfield is a late teen who is in a boarding school (Pency). Holden failed every class exept english and he was kicked out of his school. Afraid to tell his mother and father, Holden leaves Pency and makes his way back home to NYC, where he can break the news to his mother and father before anyone else. Along the way he meets a collection of people. Nuns, Prostitutes, Old friends and family. If there is one book that all book shelfs must have then it is this masterpiece. You will not regret buying it.
Rating: Summary: epic novel for those between between childhood and adulthood Review: I have read this book twice and it is the number 1 reason I read today. This is a classic tale of an adolescent teen living in his own skin and not liking the feeling; isn't that the model all teens live under? Probably more today then when I was growing up and had all those unchannelled emotions and misgivings (early 80's) I think we all need to reread this book every 10 years or so to reconnect to our youth and help us to understand what the younger generations are up against. It aint all cake and ice cream from what I remember. A true classic you will love!
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: I have read this novel as a teenager, as an adult, and now as a teacher teaching the novel to high school students. Each time I read it, I enjoy it more and more and find deeper and deeper meaning.
