Rating: Summary: I Just Don't Think I Get it. Review: I have just finished reading this book and honestly, I am not quite sure what the point of it all was. Holden just didn't seem "messed up" enough for me. If he was more dysfunctional, with a bad history and more serious problems, I think I'd appreciate it more. But he just seems like another slacker I might come across at any time. I think if the book was to be edited, omitting the parts that were not significant; those parts which just basically padded the book with unneccessary chapters, it'd be about 100 pages. Plus, the ending didn't satisfy me. It wasn't a book I could "sink my teeth into". I guess I think this way because I started reading it assuming it would be great, and it was anticlimactic.
Rating: Summary: * * * POWERFUL STORY THAT ALL SHOULD READ * * * Review: I have just finished reading this book for the third time and I am fairly confident now that the acclaim this novel has received is well deserved. It provokes discussion and it is an important and well-thought out examination of a life. Some readers may come away thinking that the story should have been more entertaining or more forthcoming with trite and upfront assessments about life. This is not the case with "Rye". Read it to educated yourself... read it for the experience. For a more modern tale along the same lines as this one, also check out Joseph Green's PSEUDO COOL. Young people examining their lives has always been an interesting topic for debate.
Rating: Summary: Did any of the reviewers even READ this book? Review: I have just read several reviews posted regarding "The Catcher in the Rye." I am amazed that none have even the slightest comprehension of the plight of the main character, Holden Caufield, or the timeless truth and lessons in this book. In 2001, can we, as a culture, only appreciate the "challenge" of coming of age if it's on a screen, has full female frontal, and moves along as quickly as its Number 1 soundtrack? Is it possible that so many Americans, supposedly appreciative of literature, are so uncultured and inept? (or never discussed this book's meaning in a high school English class?) I will always go back to this story of Holden, in rememberance of the sadness and fondness of youth.
Rating: Summary: I've Already reviewed this novel, but I have more to say! Review: I have just spent about 30 minutes reading through some of the reviews. Most people gave 'The Catcher in the Rye' 5 stars( Well done, all of you!) and as for the other's who give it only 1, then I seriously do not think they got the morale of the story. One of the reviews (By David.P, or something). He said 'What is The Catcher'? In case you haven't noticed, it indicates Holden Caulfield, and how he refuses to grow up into the world of troubles and worries. He doesn't want other people to go the same way, so he wants to protect others from falling off the cliff. That is 'The Catcher in the Rye' Moving on: If you read through the reviews on this extremely superb novel, you will see that 99% of the readers of The Catcher, have either rated it 5 stars....or 1 star. Hardly any rated it 2 stars..or 4 stars, merely 1 or 5. Doesn't that fascinate you? You go to other books: reviewers state 1, or 3, or maybe 5. It just shows how magical this book is. If has tremendous dialogue, and absolutely excellent background setting. You either hate this book, or you either love this book, there is no other solution! If any of you out there have rated this book 5 stars, then congratulations and well done on getting the basic morale of this novel THE BEST BOOK OF THE 20th CENTURY!
Rating: Summary: can never read it too many times Review: i have never been so into a book from the get go, to the end, as i always am when i read this. going through some similar things myself at one point or another, or knowing people who did, really impacts me. i don't want to spoil the book, but i'll just say one thing. "get it"
Rating: Summary: Realism at its very best Review: I have never met a character as real as Holden Caulfield before this book. The main character literally speaks to you (in first person) about his struggles, fears, likes, dislikes and reveals so much about himself that you end up rooting for him. In a nutshell, the story revolves around the everyday goings-on of a fifteen-year-old school dropout. You may be tempted to discredit the plot/story line as mundane, but let me assure you that this book has so much more to offer. Some may find Salinger's portrayal of the angst-ridden youth a tad whiny and frustrating, but that's just part and parcel of growing up. The author paints this brilliantly - emphasizing that the road to self-discovery can be a frightful, lonesome experience. And all this, in Holden's very own words. Very candid, very real. Personally, I could identify with a lot of the observations Holden made about himself as well as others (he once called himself a yellow chicken because he hated fist fights). Salinger also splashes the book with ample humor, making this one of the more memorable reads I've had. Overall, "The Catcher in the Rye" is a brutally honest book - one that peers into the soul of anyone who's still searching for a direction in life, whether you're fifteen or fifty. Read it, you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A must for any social outcast! Review: I have never read a book that captures all the trauma of an out of place teenager with as much reality and humor as Salinger does in this book. While not everyone will be able to completely understand the path that Holden takes, those who do know can learn many lessons about life from this chain-smoking, phony-hating, misfit high schooler
Rating: Summary: Different...in a good way Review: I have never read any other book like Catcher in the rye, yet it is one of the best books I have ever read. I can relate with Holden in so many ways...This novel was truly one of the best classics out there and If you have not yet..I would advise you to read it.
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye lost my attention Review: I have no i dea why this work is so popular; it is equivolent to a PG-13 movie about a teenager that lacks a plot.
Rating: Summary: A masterpiece!! Review: I have no idea what to say! Did i like the book of corse i did.Did i go through what Holden went through in my teen age years?well i can say that i hated everybody( who didnt) and got expelled from school for hitting a guy over no apparent reason(not alot of ppl do that) i felt like an oustider misunderstood no purpose in life but just to become like all the phonies around me. Did i get over it(23 just graduated.computer engineer) ofcorse i Did all of us do.Did i learn anything from that awful unforgetable period? just like Holden in the end I dont know what to think and thats what i liked most about the book the idea that in those 2 days our hero may have experienced a nervous breakdown depressing alienating thoughts ending up in an asilum eventualy maybe getting back to school and sadly becoming a phony just like the rest of us but also just like Holden missing all his friends and the events of these 2 days I 2 miss that period in my life where I wanted to be different to have a real image of mself not a phony one.I like this book because Through Holden and even for a short while i could again experience that period and maybe this time get to learn more.
