Rating: Summary: Good, but not great. Review: I believe much of the hype of this book has to do with the time of release. Many things shock us based on our culture at the time. This book would not be a 'blip on the radar screen' if released today. Overall a good piece of work, but not as epic today.
Rating: Summary: I believe the story is about hypocracy . Review: I believe that Holden is angry at people because of his brother . His brother dies and he believed that only his little brother and sister are the only people who are not "phonies" , and he is angry now that one is gone . Also that he hates how people slip into an abyss and of deciet and hypocracy when they breach their teen years . Look closely ; in the story who does he hate ? People when they grow up because they are "phonies" . And then look at his dream . I won't spoil the book but think about what comes after childhood , the "phonies" . Now think about what the field represents . So read the book .
Rating: Summary: The Catcher in the Rye was an unadventurous book. Review: I believe that the novel could have been written better than what it was. The plot was boring and there was no point. Holden left school for the fourth time, but instead of going home he rents a motel. In the end, he winds up accomplishing nothing and goes home anyway.
Rating: Summary: Relates to everyone in someway. Review: I believe this book is liked by so many people is that many folk, especially youngins, can somehow relate to Holden Caulfield's life [the main character], he is so dynamic in his negative aspect on life and his comments. I have read this book twice and im not even a big reader. The first time was for a book report, but during the summer after I cant believe I actually read it again and learned even more underlying ideas. This is a great read and not too long either!
Rating: Summary: catcher in the rye Review: I believe this is perhaps one of the top two books I have ever read. Maybe this a biased opinion, seeing as how I am rapidly approaching the age of Holden Caulfield (very rapidly, I'm told), and that I too went to a private school in which I felt I was sorrounded by phonies. However, this is the very nature of the book: I believe you can't help but relate to the main character; JD Salinger designed the character of Holden Caulfield so flawlesly that the single fact that Holden was of Salinger's own invention is reason enough for me to regard it as one of the greatest works of litearature ever written, and anyone who would disagree was never an adolescent.
Rating: Summary: Vintage Classic! AMAZIN'''' v I B e S Review: I borrowed this book from the moms, apparently its a classic tale. And I'm telling you, the most accurate description of adolesence and the "crap" that goes along with it. A pure character study, it revolutionized literature. Hail Holden!
Rating: Summary: Easy Reading Review: I bought the book because I knew it was a classic. I didn't know anything about it when I started reading. My first impression was one of humor. I smiled to myself as I read Holden Caulfield's comments and perceptive observations about people. The bond between reader and protagonist is made right from the start. Salinger writes in a very conversational style. It flows easily. The use of short and succinct phrases and sometimes one word sentences makes a sharp point. Salinger is a deft writer, entertaining his reader with his colorful language and writing style. I found it hard to put the book down especially as I gained momentum and read to the final chapter. I liked the insight given into Holden's life experiences and innermost thoughts and emotions. He is, by his own admission, a very depressed young man trying to deal with the challenges life hands him. I was however, slightly disappointed with the ending.
Rating: Summary: Im not the type to read for pleasure Review: I bought the book just for something to do after my car accident. Me being 16 and all I didnt have much life after I lost the car. I love the way I could fly though it. All the "old slang" I understood pretty well without grabbing for Mr. Dictionary. . Holden was in a situation that I know I could relate to. (Well not the prostitute part but..same feeling running through my blood though.) I agree that the world is full of phonies and it just surprized me that J.D. wasnt trying to shove some typical hog slog story down my neck. (Like all the other "Great Writers") Just read the book. If you want to know what kids have to put up with (from parents, society, school cheeses, and the pain of loosing someone that just made your day when you'd do nothing but childish things) then read the book.
Rating: Summary: Can they print enough copies? Review: I came to this site after reading the reviews of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert Pirsig. Out of pure curiosity i have been reading reviews of all my favourite books, next I shall go to Catch 22. I just HAD to write something here to contribute to this communal worship. . . I have read this book maybe 15 times over the years and its not because i am looking for hidden depths, etc. It is because Catcher In The Rye is so IMMENSELY READABLE. The prose is addictive. I pick the book up every now and again, usually when the impression has faded or whatever, and one paragraph is all it takes, I end up reading the whole thing again. This is one of those books you wished carried on and on. DO NOT LEND IT TO ANYONE!!! YOU MAY NOT GET IT BACK!!!!
Rating: Summary: My favorite book! Review: I can not believe all the people who wrote such terrible reviews of such a literary classic! Holden is such an wonderful character, and there is so much symbolism here that I think is easily missed by many people (too much to explain here, email me if you want to discuss it). When I was first assigned the book for English class, I read the first chapter and faked the rest, but after a few months, I could not stop thinking about Holden, I read the book over and over. I can get enough of it. Salinger is such a wonderful writer!
