Rating: Summary: This book is extraordinary! Review: i absolutely LOVE this book.It really relates to teenagers of all ages, including me. The words were put down simply, but with a lot of meaning. I liked the slang used which made the book even more realistic. I have read it many times, and i'm still not tired of it. It left me with a feeling to want to meet a Holden Caulfield. It also influenced me to have a different perspictive on everyday life.I recommend it to everyone, it's a book that should be read no matter what the opinion of it.
Rating: Summary: catcher in the rye, a book for the soul Review: I absolutely loved this book! It is so thought provoking..it starts out a little slowly but after the first chapter Salinger attacks the story head on. I feel like sometimes I can relate to Holden wanting to be in the rye, wanting to save all those children from the evil of the world. I would recommend this book to any age group, it is one of those books you can read at different times in your life and get something new out of it every time.
Rating: Summary: It speaks the truth! Review: I absolutely loved this book, partly because there's a little Holden Caulfield in all of us, but also because he speaks volumes about our life in America. He's right- phonies are everywhere! Maybe it's because I go to a snooty private school just like him, but I see this everywhere- girls try to show off to all the boys, and the boys just don't care-they're cynical about the world. Read the book (Salinger is a great writer) but keep in mind that you are not supposed to like Holden, because the guy's a jerk to everyone.
Rating: Summary: Holden, my friend Review: I absolutely loved this book. Holden Caulfield captures
the essence of youth and all the troubles that the youth
of any era must go through. A great book for anyone,
from a high school student to someone in their 40's.
This book will have you laughing, sympathizing and nearly in tears as you read about this troubled young man.
Rating: Summary: book of dreams Review: I accidently stepped on this book at my friends appartment. I asked him what was that laying on the floor, and he just replied " a child cartoon book". Isn't there somewhere a part of us who wants to be Holden forever... Saygio says:"What is that i don't know/but with gratitude my tears fall"
Rating: Summary: An excellent book--should top everyone's reading list Review: I actually had to read this book for my English II class (gasp! no one likes doing that!) and I absolutely loved it. I could identify with so many of the feelings that Holden had--a lot of these reviews pass him off as being "just a jerk who likes to swear a lot", but I think that Holden is actually representative of all of our inner selves. We all have that cynical, hateful person somewhere inside of us. Someone who'd just love to get kicked out of school and run rampant on the streets for afew days. He does what we sub-conciously want to do, he says what we sub-conciously want to say. I think the reason a lot of people don't like this book is that it lays out all of these feelings that Holden has, and people become threatened, so to speak, when they realize that they can identify with those feelings. But it's an excellent book, really very well written. If you would like to dispute my review, or talk about this book, you can e-mail me...
Rating: Summary: An entertaining book, good for fifteen years of age or older Review: I actually understood Holden's situation. He would become so frustrated that he would not know what to do or where to go. I agree when another entry said this book is good for teenagers, because in my experience (not that I have very much, seeing as how I am very young), teenagers experience so many frustrations. They don't feel like doing this, they hate all those stupid 'wanna-be's'. This book made me feel not as stupid and annoying as I thought I was. I really did feel sorry for Holden, but in the end, it was all going to work out.
Rating: Summary: magnificent writing for teens these days Review: I admit i'm a teen. I read this book pretty quickly and i usually dont read much but this has inspired me to check out Sallinger's other writings. What's wrong with most teens is they don't understand how people feel. This teaches that with a great point of view by Holden Caulfield. A must read for everyone.
Rating: Summary: Grand, now there's a word that really describes this book... Review: I adore this book. I think that more people should read it, and especially use the vocabulary, because it's really awesome. It's not just a great novel, it's a dictionary for really swell words from the 1950's, and also has one of the hippest characters ever. Holden Caulfield is my hero. It is by far JD's best book, actually it's his only novel, the rest of his books are short stories, mostly about the Glass family. I guess once you've written the best why try the rest? I love how the book portrays the mind of teenagers. I think that everyone can identify with The Catcher in the Rye because most people have had a time in their lives when the world is totally open to you, and you're still completely lost. Also, it is one of the funniest books I've ever read, because Holden's ideas are so honest about everyone but himself, although he acknowledges, as does the rest of the world, that he's a madman. When we read this book at school some people didn't enjoy it because they thought that it was hard to follow, but given its world-wide popularity I think that it is definitely worth at least trying to read, and nearly everyone who does really passionately loves it, as I do.
Rating: Summary: Beautifully written! and true Review: I always expected this book to be a long drawn version a teen and phsyco-babble that no teenager would ever use. I was pleasantly suprised. Holden, while frequently cynical, was entertaining and funny. His problems were unique, but he displayed himself just like a teen, and made everyone remember those days growing up.
