Summary: a timeless masterpiece from a literary recluse
Review: Generations of readers have praised the genius of Salinger and his Catcher in the Rye, which has since received limitless raves and has been regarded as one of the great American novels of this century. Having assimilated the coming of age exploits of Holden Caulfield, I would have to agree with the majority, wholeheartedly.

Salinger's prose--written from the perspective of Caulfield who is but a naive teenager--strikes a chord with the reader, allowing one to empathize with the protagonist and his unique vision of life. Salinger has created a character in Caulfield that will withstand the test of time. The witticism crackles like a whip in this book, and Caulfield's constant carping is hilarious at best.

It remains a flawless chef d'oeuvre; Salinger's greatest published work to date.

We were all Holden Caulfield at some point in our lives.

A sensational read.

Summary: a true american classic - as good as it gets
Review: giving this book a favorable review is almost cliché. the one thing that, i think, most everyone that has read this book would agree upon, is that it is truly timeless. since it's publishing in 1951 this book has become an american classic.

the story is simple enough but rich with many characters. the main character holden caulfield is sometimes <as in the story> misunderstood. i paraphrase yogi berra, ".. i thought catcher in the rye was about baseball, turns out it's just about some whinny kid .." this comment was made tongue in cheek and to illicit a laugh but those who do not enjoy this book often leave with this misconception.

the story is really one that would seem to be ripped more from today's generation x then the era it was written. holden is experiencing many difficulties in life, most of which appear to be centered around authoritative figures. the book is written in holden's narrative and although he tries to come off as sophisticated, cynical, or perhaps even aloof he's really just looking for meaning or to be understood.

i realize that my review can only inspire you so much to read this book. i wish i could do more. i can only suggest that if you have not read this book - buy it .. read it. if you have read this book - read it again. regardless, your time will be well spent.

Summary: form your own opinion
Review: Go into this book without all the expectations and just read it for what it is. Instead of searching for the "deep" meaning, let the message come to you and say what it has to say to YOU. Catcher has proved so popular over the years because it carries meaning and realates to so many different people. Don't worry about what you're supposed to get out of Catcher, instead, find your own meaning. So start reading- like a madman.

Summary: One of My all time Fave books
Review: God, i loved this book! the first time i read it, i was going thru a bad time myself, really low and depressed and i could really realate to holden. My favourite thing about the book is that all the characters are so REAL, they are not the flimsy shallow images you read in todays novels, Holden Caulfield is a real human being and i wouldn't be surprised to meet him one day.

I loved the descriptions of the people at Pencey. Stradlater, "Ackley-kid" and his history teacher who read out his exam essay.

The style of writing is beautiful too, really keeps you hooked on till the last page...
So overall, i would say this was an amazing book, and if you are thinking of reading it, go ahead....you'll enjoy it for sure

Summary: Good Book
Review: Good book....good for people who like to get into someones life. This kid, Holden Caulfied gets expelled from school and its about his life afterwards. The books plainly about his life after being expelled....three or four days....nothing more...nothing less. Good for teenagers! Finally, a teenager who isn't some indian out in the woods who is trying to become a worrior...a real teen who uses good curse words and calls most girls whores.....its so fun to read....so read it...local library peeps??? Ever heard of one?

Summary: AS J.D.SALINGER SAID AT THAT BOOKSIGNING LAST WEEKEND
Review: GOTCHA! No, J.D. Salinger didn't appear at a booksigning last weekend, but I wish he had. So do millions of his other readers. As an author with my debut novel in its initial release (as well as a high school teacher for over twenty years), I am a great admirer of THE CATCHER IN THE RYE. By all counts and by all measures, Salinger's great novel is one of the finest books ever written by an American. It has now been fifty years since THE CATCHER IN THE RYE was first published, and Salinger's story of Holden Caulfield rings as true today as it ever has. Holden's angst-filled voice remains heartfelt and honest. It is a book that everyone should read at least once. It should be read several times. It is a masterpiece, and Salinger should be proud. I am certain he is. Now, if he'd only agree to go on a book promotion tour. There is no better way to see America and meet the American reading public!

Summary: I liked Holden, a teenager from anywhere, anytime!
Review: Great book, no dark messages, just a kid unable to get over the grief of losing his brother (after all they were close in age and also it was a recent loss). The whole family were still coming to terms with this as his mother "hadn't been the same since" his father was emotionally distant, brother geographically the same. His heart was in the right place, e.g. questioning middle-class snobbery and politely deciding whether to rebel or not! I loved him but nothing sinister....... not a bit! :o) x

Summary: Wow
Review: Great book, perfect existential style. There's nothing like the wasteland Salinger creates for Holden and his readers. This book is barren and beautiful. A must read!
