Rating: Summary: the catcher in the rye Review: Thousands of people have read The Catcher In the Rye and most of them loved it. As one of the people who love this book, I would say, this book is a really good to read. The writing style of this book is very different from style of other books. Also, it is easy to understand, so it doesn¡¯t bore the readers. It causes the readers want to read it. In addition, the author, J.D. Salinger has the great skill, which makes the reader feel like being in the story. These are the reason why The Catcher In the Rye is a really good book to read. Many ¡°Best-Sellers¡± have attracted people with their amusement of the contents. In this sense, The Catcher In the Rye has a great resource of enjoyment for readers. In my case, I never got bored of this book, during entire period of reading. The first interesting part of the book is its distinctive language use. The main character, Holden Caulfield, tells the story as a narrator. He recites and describes his feelings in vivid expressions as if he speaks to readers. As he narrates the story, he uses the language, which would be used in conversation between close friends. For example, he says, ¡° I was the goddam manager of the fencing team. Very big deal. We¡¯d gone in to New York that morning for this fencing meet with McBurney School (P.3).¡± It makes the reader to be more friendly and comfortable with the book. Holden Caulfield is a teenager boy and story is mostly about his experiences of many new things as a teenager. This gets me excited, because I am also a teenager. Things he has experienced and the way he has felt are quite friendly to me. I feel something that adult reader would not feel. Thus, the teenagers would enjoy this book a lot more than adults would. To tell the truth, this book was my 3rd or 4th book I have read in my life, except the books I read from school. With the books I have read, I had some troubles reading it, because there were some parts that were totally confusing and hard to understand. Also, the vocabulary often stops flow of reading, because I had to look in the dictionary quite often to find the meaning of the words. However, The Catcher In the Rye was very easy to read and understand. I hardly ever looked in the dictionary. I could easily finish one chapter without getting stuck. Moreover, I didn¡¯t need to think hard while I read this book. I could just relax and enjoy it. That¡¯s one of the reasons why it¡¯s really a good book to read. While I read this book, I have realized the author¡¯s great writing ability. He has the ability to make the readers feel really being in the story. Also he makes the readers feel the same way as Holden does. For example, I felt depressed when Holden was down, and I felt quite delighted when Holden finally gets what he wanted. While I was reading, I was so deep in the book, so that I didn¡¯t recognize my brother¡¯s calling me and couldn¡¯t feel the time passing. In my opinion, the author, J.D. Salinger is a fantastic writer who can manipulate the readers while they read. The author who can put you so deep inside of the book, you just got to find out what will happen next. The most main reason why The Catcher In the Rye is really a good book to read, is because of the author¡¯s ability. The Catcher In the Rye is a very nice book to read, especially for teenagers. This book well describes a teenager¡¯s feelings of experiencing new life. This book is fun and humorous that keeps the reader away from sleeping or getting bored. It¡¯s also very easy and simple; it gives you a comfort and relaxes. It¡¯s totally different from the other books, which would give you a headache. In addition, this book is well written enough to get you really in the story. The author makes the readers fall into the story and feel the sadness and happiness as the story goes along. It¡¯s the author that creates the different world in your mind. This skillful writing with humor and straightforward expressions are the reasons why The Catcher In the Rye is a really good book to read.
Rating: Summary: A BODY MEET A BODY COMING THROUGH THE RYE! Review: Throughout the book, Holden has so many diiferent things happening for him. From begining to end, there are some things that reveal soemthing about him. Such as the foils on the subway, the red hunting hat, the tumer, 'Giving her the time', etc. Even his dream about the children coming through the rye. It all adds up.=)
Rating: Summary: A realistic look at the life of a teenager Review: Throughout these reviews, I have read horrible things about Salinger's style and the character of Holden Caulfield. Obviously, the people who feel this way are idiots who can't handle any type of syntax but the basic, mediocre subject/verb dribble. This novel is the best I've ever encountered. Some readers seem to miss the fact that Holden is talking to a psychiatrist- the reason for his rants. You don't go to a shrink to say everything's fine. You go to complain. Salinger's insight into the mind of the clinically depressed is amazing. I can't imagine anyone not falling in love, or at least empathizing, with Holden.
Rating: Summary: The Meaning of Life Review: Throughout this book, Holden is not just searching for the meaning of life, but more specifically the meaning of his life. After nearly forty hours of bars, prostitutes and trashy hotels, he finds it. Happiness. Plain and simple, right? Unfortunately no. This spawns another question. What makes you happy? For Holden, it was watching his sister Phoebe ride the carousel in the park. It did take him, however, aout seventeen years to discover that. Even worse, there are people out there much older than that that still aren't sure what makes them happy. That's why through Holden's example, the importance of finding yourself and finding what makes you happy is so important. Because of his innate knowledge of life Holden seems to teach life lessons throughout his journey through New York.
Rating: Summary: Wake up and hear Caulfield! Review: To all the morons who say this book is boring because it has no plot, why don't you read The Stone Angel by Margaret Laurence and find out what boring is! You guys give me the royal pain. You don't have to be a psychopath to get this book, just human. I'm not a smoker, I'm not a drug addict, heck I don't even swear. But I adore Holden because he's an idealist. He won't throw an snowball at a fire hydrant because it's too white. He won't sleep with a prostitute because he feels sorry for her. He doesn't want kids to see the "f*** you" sign because it'll pollute their minds. He feels bad for the nuns since they don't eat anything swanky for lunch. People say that Holden is cynical and doesn't care about anything. But he does care, not about materialistic things, but simple things that really matter. Now, that's more than I can say for some people I know.
Rating: Summary: This book should be read by everyone! Review: To anyone who didn't like this book: Pick it up again in a few years. Very few books require hitting the timing perfectly. At some point you will like it.
Rating: Summary: Quintessential Depression Review: To be brief, the book was well written and a great literary work. To say the book was gripping might well do more to psychoanalyze the reader than 2 years of therapy. It sums, quite neatly, the lack of philosophical fiber that permeates throughout the masses. But of course that's the point isn't it? Holden grapples with this aimlessly. While exemplifying depression, he walks about a sort of measuring cup... What a situation seems to be... how he feels about this person or that. No rational observation, mere whimsical regard, while juxtaposed with the non-understanding phonies, happy in their ignorance. There is nothing promising in this book. It's the type of material that one ought "push" against. It's the antithesis of ego, and consummate overwhelmed confused depressed id. IF one reads this and is put of by the language and the erratic and also repetitive sentiments, one must remember that the book feeds emotionally not rationally. You are feeling at that moment the same repugnance and contempt the main character feels. That is why it's a great book. Litereature should make you feel.
Rating: Summary: It would be impossible to sum up this book in one line. Review: To be brief...this book was excellent, magical, and very moving. Although I grew up in a different country, it was easy for me to relate with Holden Caulfield because I used to live in NY and I think any 18-year-old teenager could easily relate to his character. When I first started reading this book, I was amused by the main character. As I continued to read, I began to despise Holden because it seemed that he would never be satisfied with anything. By the end of the book, I could understand why he refused to compromise. He WAS phony like the rest of them, which was why he couldn't even stand himself much less the rest of the world. Allie and Pheobe were the only two people he found honesty and purity in. He felt lost and desperate to escape the phoniness of the world, yet he couldn't escape because there was no place to go...and i don't think he really wanted to go...he wanted to be free...but what did that mean? Anyhow, this book was not a melodramatic, teary, overdone book. This story was very realistic although the use of slang seemed a bit redundant. The reason why this book has offended so many people and has caused so much controversy, is because it is a great book that can not be interpreted so simply. A book that causes debate must be a great.
Rating: Summary: Most Powerful and Enjoyable Book I have ever read!! Review: To be honest, I have not read that many books in my life. This book, "Catcher in the Rye", was given to me as a school assignment. At first, I thought it would be a boring book, just like all the other ones that they give in school. I ended up loving this book. I love Holden Caulfield. Holden speaks the truth about life and about adolesence. He says things that a lot of us feel but don't really admit. Many of the things that Holden speaks of really makes sense. You start to feel that you're not the only one who thinks the same things. I would tell anybody and everybody to read this book. I can totally understand why this book is a classic.
Rating: Summary: Extremely depressing Review: To be totally honest with you I thought the book is seriously over-rated. Maybe some day when I'm old and gray I'll understand the true meaning of this book. I got two things out of this book. First, that he wanted to save people, (catcher in the rye), and hewas totally messed up in the head. I beleive he was suffering from clinical Depression. PA
