Rating: Summary: A very moving book for me Review: This has got to be my favorite book. There is just something about this book that takes control of you when you read it. Holden makes you think about things in your own life. He makes you question your believes. My feelings for this book are hard to put in words that is how high I place this book.
Rating: Summary: bizarre and worth reading (minor spoilers) Review: This has got to be one of the most thought provoking books ever. Basically, it's about Holden Caulfield, who is expelled from school and goes on an eye-opening odyssey through New York over the weekend. However, the book goes much deeper than that story. His obsevations on parts of his life convince him to try to save people who are beginning to sucumb to society's corruption, and he becomes the catcher in the rye, determined to save as many people as he can. This quest gradually drives him insane, and we get numerous hints that he is narrating from a mental institution. It all comes together to make the reader question what his role in life is. Read The Catcher in the Rye. You won't be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: a great classic, banned or not Review: this has to be my favorite book of all time!!! the way Salinger describes Holden Caulfield's journey through adolescent life is extrordinary. Salinger makes you feel like you are right in the action!!! this is a definite MUST READ.
Rating: Summary: definitly a 5 star book Review: This is a book about a 16 yr old boy,Holden living in New York, and two days in his life. There is a large amount of deep descriptive writing which really allows you to get deep into Holden's mind. The carefully chosen useful words and the style in which its written makes this the best book ever. You really feel like you have connected with the character anhd the book really speaks to you.
Rating: Summary: A good reminder Review: This is a book about Holden Caulfield, a young man with lots of potential but a poor perspective, little focus, and no plan. The reader's frustration grows throughout the book as Holden makes goals, but devises no plan to reach the goals and therefore is repeatedly unsuccessful. He never corrects this pattern. At the close of the book, I was struck by how each of us is so like Holden Caulfield. How many times do we make goals only to fail because we didn't set a step-by-step plan for achieving those goals? This book reminds me of this and illustrates how much greater a loss is felt when one has much potential and accomplishes nothing. The only negative I would give this book is its unrealistically excessive coarse language.
Rating: Summary: Programmed Minds Revolt. Review: This is a book that rebels against the systematic programming of people that has been going on for years. This novel shows a young man who knows something is wrong, but can't figure out what. He doesn't have the words or knowledge to know that everything he has been taught about the world is a lie. The thing people don't realize about books like these and others, is that these people are here now. There are many teens in America who are depressed for seemingly no reason, and who don't enjoy school and hate all this bs that is flooding our world. This book is a must read.
Rating: Summary: I can't believe there are people who don't LOVE this book! Review: This is a book you can read over and over. So what if you don't like the character. You must admit it is hilarious. So what if it rambles on and the character is aimless. Holden is REAL, one of the most real characters ever. Fantastic
Rating: Summary: Bad book, would make a good movie Review: This is a classic example of a book that would be much better as a movie. It really is just a watered down, tame Dawson's Creek episode. Salinger doesn't know how to write dialogue or project teenager's emotions, but some of the visuals and situations would play out well in a film. I could see this starring Freddie Prinze Jr. This screwy book should be stripped from the shelves and turned into a WB show, maybe it could replace Dawson. Two thumbs down, Salinger.
Rating: Summary: Filthy Review: This is a disgusting, filthy book that should, God-willing, NEVER infect another child's mind
Rating: Summary: Outstanding!!! Review: This is a fantastic book, a true classic if there's ever one. Salinger has a way of writing that brings the characters to life, and what's more, is that they're characters that we care about, and want to read about. The reader can't help to identify with most of the characters. One of the characters that we can all identify with is the main character, Holden Caufield. As the reader, we're able to get have the treat of spending two or three days with him. We see how negative he is, but yet we wish him the best of luck. Why's what do you ask? It's simple....we can see some of ourself in Holden. We can't help to care about him, b/c he's us. Maybe we're not as negative as Holden, but at times, we're him. We're him b/c he's an honest character. Holden could be our neighbor, a family member, or a friend. That's how strong of a writer Salinger is. He has the power to hold us to the page. We want to see what Holden's going to do next. We see Holden getting kicked out of school and spend the next two days with him, and are able to look at his life. I like the ending b/c it makes you think. I highly suggest this book. Once you start, I promise you won't be sorry.
