Summary: Stunning and surprising
Review: This book is good in many ways: the characters, the story and the way the author guides you through the story itself. I enjoyed it very much, I only disagree on the fact Holden is a typical teenager. I wasn't like that in many aspects. Still probably he is NOT the typical teenager and that's why the story works!

Summary: It's one of the best books I have ever read!
Review: This book is great! I don't recommend it for anyone under 13, there is lots of swearing... It's great how Holden decides what HE needs and wants for himself and never follows in anyones tracks. It is also a great summer-time read.

Summary: wow....
Review: This book is great... I disagree with people who don't think it's humorous... it is.... its cynical, ironic, dark humor of a mentally depressed boy, but it is humorous none the less. Its humor often stings you as you catch yourself being in that position very often... Basically, it is an eye-opening book that makes the insane seem sane and REAL life to seem more insane than we ever imagined.

Summary: I laughed almost all the way through
Review: This book is hilarious. I have just started reading. Thought I should read what they call classics. This one is the best so far. It takes me back to when I was that age. I was a know it all just like old Holden, and disgusted with most of the world too. I don't understand anyone giving this book a one star review, but they should learn to spell. That really gets me when these phonies who think they are smart and all give a book a bad review and can't even spell. Anyway it's a great book, you will understand this review a little better after you read it.

Summary: A SAD DISAPPOINTMENT
Review: This book is known as a classic for it's simplicity. It is not symbolic, beautifully worded, are even an elegant story. It is not the crude language that turned me off, I liked that because it set tone for the book. It was the fact that I do not believe this story has any artistic value, other than it's over 100 pages. What can I say, different strokes for different folks. The only reason I would suggest this book is for experience sake. Any well read individual should know this book. That doesn't mean that you have to appreciate it.

I also think that this book is not as universal and does not apply to ever adolescent or teenager, I think the only person this book applies to is the author himself. It is a selfishly written , unintentional classic.

This book should have a Surgeon Generals Warning or something like that reading... WARNING: This book should not be read while operating heavy machinery, for it strains all intelligent thought from your brain.

Summary: Starts well, but goes nowhere
Review: This book is like one of those Saturday Night Live skits that's entertaining when it's ten minutes long, but not so entertaining when it's stretched to fill enough time for a feature length movie. The book chronicles a few days in the life of Holden Caulfield, a 16 year old who's been kicked out of private school and decides to leave early for home. In the beginning, Holden's attitudes and observations, told in his own words, are amusing. Practically everyone he knows is either a moron or a phony. But his cynical attitude quickly becomes boring. Nothing of interest happens other than Holden going from place to place, meeting different people, having the same types of conversations, and making the same types of observations. It's a shame because the book could have worked on many different levels. As a character story, it would have been interesting to explore the source of Holden's cynicism, but that never happens. Holden mentions the death of his brother and of a schoolmate, which clearly had profound effects on him, but never really elaborates so the reader is left guessing. The dark humor of Holden's cynicism could also have sustained the story if there had only been some variety in his observations, but unfortunately there wasn't. Perhaps this book was edgy back in the 50s, but today it's just dull.

Summary: Please read this book!
Review: This book is my bible. I have read it 27 times. I f you have a problem with this book, then YOU have a mental problem and absolutely no tase whatsoever in literature. The underlying themes in this book are monumentally moraly impacting in my life. This book has guided me through all of my tough times and all of my good times. Please read this book. I believe that you will be a better person for it.
