Summary: Small Book with a Big Story
Review: This Book by J.D Salinger is one of his finest (if not shortest).
It tells the tale of adolesance in its most cynical and sarcastic form... in the form of a soon to be expelled prep school boy to be exact.
You watch the young character work through his emotional problems and spiritual problems in his own unique cynical matter. The story is well developed and is witty to the ending... with a slightly disturbing surprise ending that leaves you thinking for days after you've read the book.
This is one of the most well developed and complicated characters to ever be presented in literature, and his story is one worth reading about.

This book is recommended to anyone as a good read and good example of fine literature.

Summary: I was born in 1951
Review: This book changed my life. I grew up in a blue-collar neigborhood where you went to work young and school was secondary. Unfortunately, most times you were judged by your cloths, your car and how much you had in your pocket. By the time I was ten I read just about every sports book in my local library. However, when I picked up this book in 1964...I understood the true importance of reading. Salinger is a carpenter and his tools are words. This book moved an entire generation.

Summary: Thought-provoking...
Review: This book chronicles the mental breakdown of its main character, Holden Caulfield. Written in the first person, we gain access to the cynical and sardonic attitude of a youth who is unable to synthesize his emotions and mores into a cogent view of the world.

Young readers of this work may find much in common with Holden. Older readers may simply find him petulant and immature. I decided to read this book for the first time at age 43, mainly to see what all the hubbub was about (Lennon/Hinckley, etc). The book did help reacquaint me with the unrealistic idealism and haphazard thought processes that plagued me during adolescence. At the same time, I have to wonder about the mental health of anyone who can fully relate to the main character.

Salinger's "stream of consciousness" style makes for a difficult and often frustrating read. I spent much of the first half of the book seeking a plot that didn't exist. The book has no beginning, middle, or end; and is more of a psychological profile than a novel.

If your goal is to be entertained, this isn't the book for you. If you want to get in touch with another part of your psyche, it might be. Either way, I suspect it's not the kind of book you'll want to crack open more than once.

Summary: Amazing
Review: This book completely captivated me from start to me. We were reading it as a class for about 4 weeks, but I read the book from start to finish the weekend I got it. Honestly, there were times in the book when Holden was taking words right out of my mouth. Every teen out there should read this masterpiece.

Summary: Boring but Meaning Ful
Review: This book could not have had a more boring plot. What is so important about everyday life, hey it happens to every one. So why fill 200 pages on it. It is though okayly written and has some meaning . But it is going to happen to everyone. -Coleman Potter-

Summary: Cather in the Rye- THE PERFECT BOOK!
Review: This book deals a lot with the feelings and emotions of a maturing teen. Holden (the main character) finds himself exploring life by traveling the wrong way. He finds himself getting kicked out of school and visiting New York, where he hides from his relatives, but what he can't avoid is his past and his problems. J.D. Salinger pulled out all the stops when he wrote this book with a mix of adventure, suspense, historical fiction, and realistic fiction. It's a must read and there's no doubt that I give this novel five stars. Catcher in the Rye is truly the perfect book.

Summary: The Catcher in the Rye... A real catch!
Review: This book deserves all the credit it can get! It rocks.... Although, yes, it is depressing at times, it is also hilarious and real. I'm 17 years old, only a year older than Holden, and, actually, I can kind of relate to his story-- All of the guys at his prep school, Pencey, seem very real.I'll admit, teenagers can be some of the phoniest people in the world. He does mention how much he hates phony things.... From teachers, to students, down to people he knows from other places, and how phony movies are. He is mature and seemingly wise beyond his sixteen years; and, yet, he acts like a twelve year old, too. He's the one of the most real teenage boy characters I've read about..... My favorite parts are when he talks about his little sister, Phoebe, and, his dead brother, Allie. They are believable characters, and, you can't help but like them, too. Holden's actions and responses to his experience is witty, but, it can also open your eyes and make you realize things from his point of view. It's too bad that this is on banned book lists, because, as a high school student, I think that if this book was offered in the ciricumlm, teens would read this, and enjoy it as much as I do!

Summary: Plotless
Review: This book does have a plot, just a pointless one. I think I'm the only person on the planet who didn't like this book. I didn't see much of a reason for the writing of it, but is was a quick, engrossing read. I flew through this thing, I couldn't put it down. I wanted to read every word and follow every path the writer lead me through. However, in the end, I was very disappointed. There didn't seem to be any point to the story at all. Whatever, it was fun to read and I give it 3 stars just because of that.

Summary: Perfection
Review: This book does not need fantasy or science fiction to be great - all it needs is a truth and understanding of a kids point of view, with the writing skills of an adult. For a character with such exact point of views, I find myself constantly agreeing with Holden.
The little one linners such as "that killed me", give such a great understanding, and are placed perfectly. Other books would have looked deminished with such short and precise sentences, but it only enhances the catcher in the rye.

And to the greatest band (IMO) Greenday, this, is who wrote Holden Caulfield.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Must-Read - for not just teens
Review: This book explains many teenager actions to other people who do not understand. It also shows insite of the auhtor, that he did not tell us, but showed us these facts. This is a must-read for everyone
