Rating: Summary: Dangerous Review: Seeing so many "one star" reviews for this book is somewhat disturbing, it certainly seems to say something about Humanity: That generally people have very little understanding of each other. Holden understands the Human race, sees its many flaws, and it is this which drives him into his depression. In other words the people who didn't understand this book are not the Holdens of this world, they are proabbly the "phonies". Those who truly did, I don't mean they could just relate to him, they truly understood him, are in it with Holden: Trying to struggle through the absolute horror of life. I am not just being melodramatic, life isn't a nice business and it is those who "misunderstand" this book which that make it that way. (see also "Misunderstood" my previous review).
Rating: Summary: The Catcher in the Rye Review: Simply because a book wasn't written the way you would like it to be, does not mean it is a bad book. If every book was an adventure novel written in the same voice with the same tone, reading would get pretty pointless. The Catcher in the Rye is an extremely creative novel and should not be looked down upon simply because it is different. Why not enjoy a book for its good qualities and toss aside your single-minded view of the way a "perfect" book should be?
Rating: Summary: The cynicism of adolescence Review: Simply put - if you have never read this book, buy it. It's a timeless piece that is as fresh and modern today as it was when it was first written. Don't be fooled by peoples assertion's that its fame has been garnered from its vulgarity or its abusive use of directness.
Rating: Summary: Comfort Read Review: Since I am a teenager, this book helped to realize that I am not alone in insecurities and mistrials. He says everything that is on his mind, which is probably why this book is all about 1-2 days in his life. Although I think he drinks way too much, its still a good book
Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye and Countrfeit Son Review Review: Since I have read Catcher in the Rye, I believe that the book should be read by all young readers. This book deals with every day problems that young men go through in their everyday lives. Finally there is a book with a fictional character that young men can relate to; I understood most of Holden's problem through out the book. I haven't read Counterfeit son, however I think all young adults should also read this book today, This book deals with kid napping. There is a lot of kid napping cases now more than ever. Kid napping has risen tremendously around the world. Many young adults do not know how serious this issue is. After reading the reviews for Counterfeit son, I finally understand that issue is more serious than I thought. Mature young adults should read both books because both of them relate to the problems we face in society today.

Rating: Summary: finally pleased Review: since im only 15, and i probably sound like an idiot but...i really do like this book. since in high school they make you reader all the "great classics" and ruin the entire experience for you, i decided to read it before they held a knife to my neck and made me. i've read almost all the books that people say are amazing and i was left very unimpressed. catcher inthe rye i liked because i felt i was actually talking to holden, i laughed, and i felt like i could relate to it. the fact that i laughed really amazed me since i usually never laugh while i read, but CITR did that to me. its a wonderful book, and i'd read it again and again for the rest of my life if i had the time.
Rating: Summary: A MUST-READ, MUSTREAD BOOK Review: Since its publication in 1951, J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye has been deemed as a classic both in literary quality as well as in its narrative, storytelling appeal. In short, the novel tells the story of teenager Holden Caulfield, over the course of a few days following yet another expulsion from an upper tier private school. The book is told in a first person perspective, straight from Holden to the reader. It's really a pretty simple style, and it works on two levels-one: pulling in the reader with relatively simple prose, and, two: the simplicity of the style reiterates Holden's simplicity (youth) as a character. The following review contains very few details about the book's plot. Holden, as a character, is a cocky youthful male who has been given most of what he has in life; yet he does not appreciate what he has, or even the world around him at all. He is an extremely cynical soul, fed up with the phonies around him, fantasizing about fleeing west to get away from everything. He can't even find social outlets like dating, friendship, or movies to be a rewarding activity as, again, it's all too phony. While the story is over fifty years old, it holds up with its powerful characterization, strong sense of setting (mostly NYC), and timeless sense of an individual looking to find a place. Holden's quest is, although exaggerated beyond most people's level of cynicism, one that anyone can relate feel to at least a minimal degree. The book's depth, though, comes from the fact that Holden is not the simple boy he first seems. In truth, by following his thoughts and actions over the course of the book, the reader sees him beyond his face value, beyond the youthful façade and into the head and heart of a real, rounded person with complex emotions that even he cannot understand. This comes across most clearly through Holden's interactions with his sister, and his revelations about his brothers, Allie and D.B. If a label must be given, I would refer to Catcher in the Rye as a coming of age story, although Holden does not leave at book's end as a mature adult, rather a more-developed human being with a somewhat greater understanding of the confusing world around him. Due to the simple storytelling style, this book is readable to about anyone-not just those with acquired literary tastes, and the content and themes do not go over an average person's head. While it may be a classic, it's no T.S. Eliot, and any reader should be able to enjoy it. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relatively quick read about youth, cynicism, family relationships, or just easy, after work reading. The book is quite amusing as Holden takes on a variety of characters from all walks of life, offering commentaries on their lesser traits. Another great book I'd like to recommend is The Loser's Club by Richard Perez -- another Amazon quick pick winner.
Rating: Summary: DIGGIN IT THE MOST BABY Review: So here we are in the wasted society of 1999 and this book will rock your world. Holden always knew what the world had in store for him, and he tried to keep up.He took a pin on a quater and relized he was just a pup. I thought it was awesome. I think every one can relate to that little time when we almost lost it and relized we didn't need it.
Rating: Summary: Catch it while you can Review: So many coming-of-age novels owe a great debt to CATCHER. Certainly there were books before this one that had the COA theme-HUCK FINN comes to mind. But it seems that an avalanche followed after this one. Jackson McCrae's BARK OF THE DOGWOOD certainly owes a debt, as does the novel, SHE'S COME UNDONE. But Salinger's book is a classic, now read widely in just about every language. J.D. Salingers' CATCHER IN THE RYE is the most outstanding and best written novel out there. At first hard to understand but once you go in depth you find out the true meaning of the story. Holden's not being able to come to grips with the adult world and seeing everyone as a 'phoney' doesnt want to turn out this way. Holden's narotic deteration starts with his brothers death and you read how Holden becomes more suicidal as the story progresses. Only in the end to find hope in his little sister and realizes that he can and will do things on his own terms and become a Catcher in the Rye. The meaning is that as a child steps off the cliff into adult hood he will be there to catch them. This book is extremely good and I recommend to anyone and everyone. Would also recommend THE CHILDREN'S CORNER by the author Jackson Tippett McCrae.
