Rating: Summary: Catcher in the Rye Review: Opinion about "The Catcher in the Rye."Normally I rather prefer thrillers or books where things are happening fast but despite this I have enjoyed reading this story. Although I don't like to read very much, especially not when it's an assignment and certainly not when it's about 200 pages, I thought it was a successful book. When I started reading I couldn't stop because I always wanted to find out what was going to happen next and what Holden's (principal character) emotion/reaction would be. The main reason why I enjoyed reading the book was the well written and extensive descriptions of the persons and their feelings. I was so fascinated that it felt like I was right in the middle of the story, just like an observer. Also the nice description of the environment made me feel like it happened to me. Another very refreshing aspect in the story was the language which was the language used by the young and the way some words were written just as they were spoken. What I didn't like was the constant repetition of some words and sentences. This made it boring to read sometimes. If we add this all up, the positive sides win from the negative ones. So all in all, it has my approvement to be sold !!!
Rating: Summary: Remember when you were a troubled teen? Review: Or maybe you are a troubled teen right now. In any case, this is the book for anyone who is in or has experienced a childhood that you didn't think was happy happy joy joy (which should be about everybody). This book takes you into the life of Holden Caulfield, a troubled 14 or 15 y/o boy (some may call him a cynic) in the 1950s who got kicked out of a school he didnt like and is fighting the world of conformity and "phonies". Just because this book was written in the 50s does not mean that it doesnt apply to modern life because it does, we may have experienced some of the situations he has and can relate to it. He says everything in this book that you're afraid to say complete with profanity (the profanity isn't all that bad, its nothing all of us havent heard already) and it's even bold enough to address sex and they way we feel about it at this age. It's my favorite book of all time because of how open and true it is. It has many themes and symbols and it's just great to read again and again. You will not regret buying this book because it is a must read for EVERYONE!!
Rating: Summary: STILL IN VOGUE AFTER ALL THESE YEARS Review: Our Book Club just finished reading another angst ridden novel about several young adults coming of age called PSEUDO COOL. This lead to all of us referring to this classic coming of age tale that really drives home the angst of growing up and trying to find a place in the world.
Rating: Summary: MY FAVORITE BOOK IN THE WHOLE WORLD! Review: Out of all the books I have read in high school, I would have to say that this is the only book that touched me enough to make me remember everything about it. Not only does the reader connect to Holden Caulfield, they can also admire his individual train of thought. This was a hard book to put down after starting. Although Holden is a very cynical character, it is something almost everyone can relate to. It is almost as though the reader lives the experiences along with Holden. This will remain my favorite book for a long time.
Rating: Summary: Sweet Sixteen Review: Overrated but still good nonetheless, "Catcher in the Rye" is a book that wisely depicts teen angst and cynical adolescence. Holden Caulfield is a confused, scared and curious sixteen-year old which doesn`t quite know how to interact. Holden avoids phonies like the plague and doesn`t want to become one of them, so he ends up going from school to school without a proper plan for his future. Ok, so the story is far from spectacular, yet J.D. Salinger manages to create an interesting and realistic protagonist who offers some intriguing and witty observations about people and their behaviour. Salinger suceeds at portraying an immature, childish and spoiled kid that has trouble growing up. Both funny and sad, this book is not a masterpiece but it`s an engaging and worthwile enough read. I expected better, if you want to know the truth, since the plot goes nowhere and the ending is a bit disappointing. Still, I really kind of liked the book, I really did. Holden was an amusing character, you could tell (especially his scenes with his little sister Phoebe). All in all, "Catcher in the Rye" is a quick and appealing read that entertains while it offers some food for thought as well. I`ve seen better, but also much worse. Catch it.
Rating: Summary: What's the point? Review: Overrated. Should not enjoy the status it has. Sends the wrong message to young people. Lacks depth. How it has earned a devoted following is beyond me. I had the dubious honor of writing a book report on this when I was 14. It is ultimately forgettable.
Rating: Summary: critsizing reviews Review: pardon me , but critisizing other's reviews is wrong it is their oppinion, and they are intitled just as much as you, so lay off. by the way this book was boring and depressing and made me want to take a nap.
Rating: Summary: 5 Stars Don't Do it Justice Review: People like to sit and extol the virtues of The Catcher in the Rye. They like to discuss the underlying meaning of family and adolescence and life. People like to debate the true placement of the climax and the real significance of the duck pond. I just like to read this book. Actually, I love to read it. I love to just sit down and let this book take me on an adventure through the mind of one young man, Holden V. Caulfield, as he manages to reveal tremendous truths about, well, about just about everything. Congress should pass a law requiring everyone to read this book at least once and maybe twice. No joke.
Rating: Summary: dated and vacous Review: perhaps a novel which is too much viewed through rose coloured lenses. although well enough written i have always found the story to be somewhat absent. an uninteresting mildly nihilistic character, meanders through a brief and uninteresting plot. leaves me cold.
Rating: Summary: A teenager that DOESN'T like Catcher!! Review: Perhaps I am one of the few teenagers that hasn't fallen in love with Catcher in the Rye! Many people favor the book so much because of its realness and their ability to relate to the story of its main character. Well, I have suffered through depression like Holden Caulfield, but I didn't find the book appealing nor realistic! It totally lacked any plot, but was FULL of frivelous writing and cussing. I can't seem to understand why so many people acclaim this book to be one of the best ever when it has no content! It is full of rambling and endless pages that contribute to its lack of interesting aspects. However, the narration was realistic; similar to the way a person would tell a story. But I do find it hard to believe someone could repeat so few words so often! I don't reccommend this book because of its lack of entertainment. Perhaps the brats like the main character will find it to be a book to re-read, but I think The Catcher in the Rye will just sit on my shelf! I welcome any comments to either agree or disagree . . .
