Summary: A transcendental glimpse into the mind of an adolescent
Review: Not knowing much about the storyline or theme of this "classic" book, I began reading it without any expectations. I was pleasantly surprised by the candid nature of the the main character's language and inner dialogue. Its rawness and bitter tone does not compromise this adolescent's view of the world.

His dismissal of the "phonies" of an adult's social world is quite mature. This noncomformist stance in a world full of "phonies" makes him genuine, but refreshingly not alone. This book rings true to those who have ever felt they "see through" all the social nonsense necessary for those who care to fit into a mold within high society.

Summary: That book was one stinger! Totally amazing stuff.
Review: Not much of a review. I am 17 and reading a story about another 17 year old, behaving rather differently from you really makes you think. I am not inspired. I am just plain amazed and awed by his personality. Realism, forthrightness, hit-you-in-the-face.....

Summary: Cherished read
Review: Not only is this a cherished read, but it is the type of book that one can read over and over and come away with even better prospectives. The book was amazing when I was a teen and even more so now as an adult.

Also recommended reads: The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter,I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings,Nightmares Echo,Of Mice And Men

Summary: Don't name your child Holden.......
Review: Not quite seeing what all of the praise was about even over halfway in, this book crept up on me. It turned out to be much more than I expected and can't help but think that much of the following it's gathered was drawn for the wrong reason. For instance, in the movie "The Good Girl", the angsty youth gave himself the name "Holden" and for obvious reasons: he identified with the cynicism of the character and his adolescent contempt for the world around him. Problem is, of course, that's not the point of the story.

It's humorous and had me snickering like an idiot as I read through some of Holden's observations, but the characters deep flaws are not a celebration in themselves. That was the impression I had gotten from people over the years: this guy is great because he's jaded like me. Not that many of his observations weren't dead-on, but to have held this general outlook and not feel sad in some way is to have missed the point altogether. Many of us can see a bit of our own cynicism, particularly earlier in life, in Holden and hopefully clearer yet, the innocently mistaken notions that led to such frustration.

Summary: 'salright
Review: Not too wonderful... Halfway through I found myself thinking "So What!" Overrated...

Rating: 4 stars
Summary: Cynical teenager hates everyone and everything.
Review: Not what I expected, this young man comes across as a 50's anarchist. Except for a few passions in his life, he rebels and criticizes everyone and everything. A true pessimist, his observations have a painfull truth to them that readers can identify with.

Summary: Nothing Happens
Review: Nothing really happens...the beginning of the book is very interesting, the way it is written attracts you to read more and more and you are really looking forward to what would happen next. One third into the book, it hits you that nothing is changing, it is basically not going anywhere, and the situation keeps on repeating itself. The interesting personalities disappear, and it turns to be just a normal story not really headed to any conclusion...

The last third is just continuing the New York adventure, just in detail how the night develops, and wondering would this night ever ends...

Anyway, some situations could be funny reading the book in the right mood, but if you have time to read, I would seriously re-consider.

Summary: These Things I believe.
Review: Now, before we begin, I'd like to preface this by stating I a) Like to think of myself as reasonably intelligent (Ha!) and b) am a High School student. Don't worry boys and girls, this isn't a "I hated this book because they made me read it for school!" (although they did, naturally.)

I did not like this novel at all. No, not because there are a lot of cuss words (my dainty ears!) People DO talk like that, believe it or not. No, friends, I didn't like it because it completely failed to connect. I realize it's bad form to slam a novel because 'you don't agree with the point of view', but that's more or less what I must do. I am not at all dissatisfied with our current society. Things are better than they have ever been, and only getting better (terrorism is only a bump in the road, really.) We live in the greatest time that mankind has ever achieved (ESPECIALLY in the USA.) How can one be disillusioned? Mein Gott.

A little off topic there eh? Well, kind of, but I simply haven't experienced 'teen angst.' Sure, my life doesn't seem to have a whole lot of direction right now, but Mr. Caufield's bizarre attitude towards society in general (adult society, I suppose) is completely alien to me.

I dunno. The book just failed to connect. I cannot share any of Holden's sentiments. He is not a terribly admirable character in my estimation, nor is his societal commentary either very interesting or insightful. We've heard it a thousand times over and it's simply flawed. I don't really want to hear another cynical voice added to the choir. Heh, that's another thing. Why are High School kids reading this? You're preaching to the choir, Mr. Salinger. I think most of my chums are already disillusioned enough. Freak out some ultra conservative Baptists or something. Oh, that's right, it's banned in Mississippi! (Maybe not, I'm just trying to inject some humor into this terribly writted, meandering piece of trash I call a 'review.')

OK, rant over. Reading over this.....thing, I realize these are the rantings of a man who is typing way past his bedtime. Maybe some of what I was trying to get across to you poor people came through. Or not. Either way, fifty five star reviews will soon cover mine up and that will be that. Carry on.

Summary: The ideal book for your children!
Review: Nowadays, teenagers rather watch television or play video games than read. But J.D.Salinger's book will take them inside their world and help them realise, that they're not alone. They will surely enjoy reading it.
