Summary: extreme blow out
Review: ...The book Bronx Masquerade is so far the best book i've ever read.Even though my sixth grade class ...has not finished reading the book almost everyone loves this book. If you are reading this then I strongly urge you to buy this book. This book has a extremely realistic plot.I have to say my favorite character of this book is Tyron.I say this because he acts like a actual person in Brooklyn. It also has real problems that would happen in a school. So this is the end of my review of the book Bronx Masquerade By:Nikki Grimes. If possible i would have gave this book 10 stars but they only let you give 5, but it deserves every one.A awsome book.

Summary: English Teacher's Review
Review: As someone who has taught elementary thru high school in a poor rural, an affluent rural, and inner-city settings, I would be hard pressed to name a more accessible, indeed necessary, reading in all of the above school settings. For anyone with a love of creative writing, particularly spoken word and social consiousness, here it is at its best. Nikki Grimes has done an outstanding job introducing the power of language to young adult readers, far too many of whom have been jaded by little more than rote grammatics.

Summary: bronx masquerade
Review: Bronx Masqerade has a rough surface, but a tender touch to it. The characters that are portrayed in the book know how to catch your attention because you know they are hiding something from you. When you start to read the student's poems, you're actually surprised. Some of these kids hardly ever come out of their judgemental shell, but we get to see what's behind the typical stereotypes. Bronx Masquerade is a great book that shows pride over prejudice.

Summary: Awesome portrayal of minority life
Review: Bronx Masquerade is about an English class of a bunch of minority students in the Bronx. Mr. Ward, the teacher, is very good with the students, even though some of them doubted him in the beginning. When one student, Wesley, asks to read a poem in class, Mr. Ward says that would be great. Many of the other students ask to read their stuff, and soon Mr. Ward has started Open Mike Fridays. Once a month the students get to read what they have written and share their feelings in front of the class. Most of these kids think that because of their race, people don't notice them and they won't make a bit of difference in the world. But through their poetry they get to know each other and find out new things. Most of the kids write their poems to disguise what they feel, but then again, most of the kids can pick up on what they are trying to say. I loved this book because it helped me get to know the kids, too. I usually don't like poetry and can't really understand it, but in Bronx Masquerade there was a lot of understandable poetry. I got the messages and when I didn't, it also had a little background of the author of the poem, and I could understand a little better from the description. I think Bronx Masquerade is a very good book and everyone should read it!

Summary: Heidi's review
Review: Bronx Masquerade is mostly about students in a classroom sharing their feelings. Throughout the book, each student gets more and more comfortable with sharing their feelings with other people. Many students overcome their conflicts throughout the book. It inspired me to look beneath the shell of anyone I see. People could be happy on the outside and hurting on the inside.

Summary: Bronx Masquerade
Review: February 2, 2004

Bronx Masquerade is wonderful blend of student journal entries and poetry. It will move you, as you read about the students' feelings as they grow to learn and understand themselves and then reach out and help each other. The students grow and begin to understand their differences as their English teacher has them read poetry out loud once a month on "Open Mike Fridays." In this book, Latinos, Latinas, African Americans, and Caucasian students share their feelings and break past their stereotyped opinions of each other and become friends. Even street hard Tyrone, who does not like school, reads his poetry and compliments all the other students' poetry as they share. Nikki Grimes does an incredible job of bringing about the issues and struggles many students go through each day, from troubles at home to problems with friends and relationships. This book was a joy to read; the poetry gave the students so much life and depth as you read about what they think and go through and then see how they express it in their poetry. I give this book a 4 star rating and recommend that you should read it.

Summary: Bronx Masquerade is a ok book
Review: I am a 7th grade literature student at ....... This book was pretty good. The only complaint I would have against this book is that it doesn't have much of a conflict. It also did not excite me that much. Nikki Grimes did a good job of making the characters in this book and their backgrounds. She also made good problems for each character. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes poetry. I would recommend it to people in the 5th through 10th grade range. Tyrone, a boy in this book, used to not like school, is now interested in Open Mike, an event held every Friday where everyone reads their own poems.

Summary: Blown away!
Review: I am a sixth grade language arts teacher and an amateur poet, and I must say that Bronx Masquerade is one of the most phenomenal books I have read in my humble 26 years of existence on the face of this earth! I read the entire book in one sitting (about four hours) because I couldn't put it down!
Nikki Grimes is definitely a jewel of a writer. She demonstrates serious skill and talent as a writer by creating poetry and prose from 18 different and quite distinct personalities, and she makes it sound so um, um, good! Grimes' poetry is a very real and absolutely awesome depiction of the power, frankness, and infectious nature of spoken word poetry. As my students would say, her writing is "tight" and "off the heezy!" Her writing is so realistic that I feel like I personally know each of the students in Mr. Ward's class. I definitely want to be like Mr. Ward, the English teacher in the book, "when I grow up!"
I participated in open mike sessions quite a bit during my college years, so reading Bronx Masquerade definitely took me back to a good time in my life. As a matter of fact, I can feel the muse beginning to awaken.
I think Bronx Masquerade should be in the possession of every English/Language arts teacher and student (in middle school and high school). Regardless of your locality, ethnicity, or comfort level with poetry, you can appreciate this candid salute to the minds of teenagers who have quite a lot to tell and not enough people to listen.
I am a sold fan of Nikki Grimes!

Summary: A MUST read for English teachers and everyone else!
Review: I am the library/media specialist at a middle school. This book was easily the best piece of YA fiction that I've read all year. The teachers with whom I shared it were similarly impressed. One teacher just couldn't put it down, so she began reading it aloud to her class. (Fortunately they were in the middle of their poetry unit!) After class several of her students came to the media center looking for copies they could check out. The characters' voices ring true to readers of all ages and the message the book sends is timeless. I highly recommend this book to all!
