Summary: Just finished!!!
Review: I just finished reading The Theif Lord a couple minutes ago and I have to say it's probably as good is not better than the Harry Potter series. It has that same feeling to it, a similar one to the Artemis Fowl series by Eoin Colfer and other books like it, without dragging anything out. It was quite an easy read and I think that many others will enjoy The Theif Lord if they try it

Summary: Good Read
Review: This is a good book for young readers. I enjoyed the characters and the sense of humor incorporated into the story. It's a lively tale that will make you laugh and wonder why you ever wanted to grow up.

Summary: well written, but not as engaging as i had hoped
Review: I don't read a lot of children/young adult novels. Just about all I've read for that age group is Harry Potter, but I've seen enough positive and glowing reviews for this book that I figured I should take a look at it. My initial impression is that it is quality work, but it lacks something that would make it truly special.

The Thief Lord is mainly the story of Bo and Prosper, two boys who have run away from their aunt's home (their parents are no longer alive) to Venice, Italy. They meet up with some other street kids and get taken in by a 13 year old named Scipio. Scipio goes under the name 'The Thief Lord'. They live in an abandoned movie theater and Scipio steals to provide for the children. The aunt of Bo and Prosper hires a local detective to find Bo (she doesn't want to take back Prosper. Bo is the younger of the two and she feels that Prosper is a bad influence on his brother). While the children are living in the theater and planning for a big robbery that will pretty much allow for them to live very comfortably, Victor the Detective is looking for them and recognizes Prosper one day on the street. Now he has an idea on how to look for the children, and the kids are alerted to fact that Victor is looking for Bo and Prosper and is getting closer. Scipio, the child benefactor also has his own secrets that he wants to keep hidden.

This is a well written book, but it isn't as engaging as I would have hoped for. I was interested in what happens next, but I was never really absorbed into the story. I'll give it a positive review, with some reservations.

Summary: Doesn't compare...disappointing!
Review: Thief Lord doesn't compare well to similar books. I didn't like it and was disappointed. There are so many other books that are better. Enough said.

Summary: Solid adventure story
Review: Cornelia Funke's "Thief Lord" is one of those few books that deserves at least some of the hype that they're given. While it's not the best I've read, it is a solid adventure story, quite well-written, with likable characters and a good, suspenseful storyline.

Prosper and Bo have run away to Venice, escaping a vicious aunt who wants to adopt only Bo. Now, they have joined up with Scipio the Thief Lord, a wily kid of their own age with a mystery identity and a band of loyal street kids, including Hornet, Riccio and Mosca. Though Prosper doesn't like stealing, he has no choice; he has to look out for his little brother, and somehow keep out of sight.

Their aunt, however, has hired a private detective (who is preoccupied with turtles) who is trailing the boys through Venice. A nasty merchant named Barbarossa has offered the Thief Lord a massive job on behalf of a mystery client. And the detective starts to home in on the two boys, as the true identity of the Thief Lord comes to light...

"Thief Lord" isn't particularly groundbreaking, but it has a slightly classic feel to it. The settings in Venice, the names of the characters (Prospero, Scipio) and the dramatic details like Scipio's costume. But Funke balances it out with funnier things like Barbarossa's ride on the carousel and Victor's preoccupation with his pets. The magical element of the carousel (shades of Ray Bradbury?) seems a bit out of place, however, as there hadn't been any magic up until then.

The writing is quite detailed and descriptive, and Funke doesn't skimp on the descriptions of how gorgeous Venice is. What's more, the translation is, as far as I can tell (which isn't far since I don't speak German), pretty flawless. If I didn't know better I would think that it was originally written in English. It doesn't have quite the sparkle of other authors like Tolkien or Diana Wynne-Jones, but it moves steadily.

Funke managed something pretty impressive in her little band of outlaws: teens and preteens fending for themselves are almost never portrayed well, but she manages it. Prosper is a likable lead character, with a lot of doubts and worries but overcoming them for his little brother; Scipio seems a little too mature, but that's okay. Victor and the street kids are strong supporting characters as well.

Cornelia Funke's book (along with the movie "Heaven") is one of the best things to come out of Germany in recent years. Very nice and a pleasant read.

Summary: Um..not quite what I suspected
Review: I have heard a lot about this book, most of it good, but I must admit that it wasn't as utterly fantastic as most people have told me. It seemed to take me forever to get through this book. The storyline was flawed (first a bunch of theives-which was quite interesting-but a MAGICAL MERRY GO ROUND?) the ending was predictible, and there didn't seem to be alot of obstacles to pass to get to the main goal. The Thief Lord was a pretty boring book--even though it has been compared to it, this book has nothing on Artemis Fowl.

Summary: OUTSTANDING! (And you thought Harry Potter was good....!)
Review: This book was one of the best books I've read, EVER, and I read tons and tons of books. I think only a few times in a lifetime do you come across a book this good. I picked the book up because I liked the cover, and something told me it would be good. I found out it wasn't only good, it was BEYOND OUSTANDING.
I found that I have a hard time telling what this book is about, since it's about a lot of things. At the beginning, Cornelia Funke focuses on the life of a gang of child thieves, especially Prosper and Bo. Prosper and Bo have run away from their "evil", wealthy aunt, who only wants to adopt the angelic-looking Bo. But the whole story turns into so much more than that. I was totally captivated throughout the whole book. I don't want to give anything away, so just trust me: READ THIS BOOK. It is probably better or as good as Harry Potter. The setting Venice, is magical, the characters come to life, and the story excels probably 99% of what I've ever read. Please read this book, it will fly to you Venice and totally captivate you! I was so sad when the book was over!!! It seemed like barely a minute ago that I was at the beginning. I LOVED, LOVED, LOVEDDDD this book, and I know you will too!!!!

Summary: Boring and Predictable
Review: i had heard that the thief lord was an outstanding children's book and it turned out to be nothing of the kind. The author starts the story at a strange place, and uses back story to explain the origin of the thief lord. the titular character gets lost because of this. the story lacks the element of realism that strong fantasy has.

also, the book is very predictable. i guessed who the thief lord was very early on.

the whole story switched in the middle from being a book about a bunch of runaways and their stuggle to escape capture to being about a magical merry-go-round. this really comes out of left field and is very unappealing. Funke is a poor writer and i can't belive this book garnered such acclaim. it's not even as good as Holes, which also was an unexciting book. the thief lord did not capture my imagination at all.

Summary: It IS a good book, I must admit...
Review: It is a good book, yes, but unfortunately you dont want to read it for ever and ever when you have finished it. It stays in your mind for a few days then POOF! its gone. The book is about two brothers who have run away from an aunt They escape to Venice, to avoid her seperating them from eachother . The evil aunt only wants the younger of the two, Bo, who is cute and angelic. Poor wots-his-name has to stay in hiding to avoid their aunt who comes to Venice looking for them. They meet a gang of street children and become very close to them. Since their parents have died in some kind of accident, they stay in an old cinema and meet the thief lord, a young boy who myseriously apppears once a week and gives the children money to survive. It is about betrayal, forgiveness and how love keeps the family together. It is not a comedy at all. It is more of an adventure story I think. anyway bla bla bla. get it please :D ive spent ages doing this review and it would be nice if it went to some use. i do have other stuff to do you know. im sorry but i cant be bothered with correct punctuation and spelling. im only 13 years old and so long as it's readable then you shouldn't mind.
