Rating: Summary: Won't You Come Home, Tim Curry? Review: I have been enjoying the "Series of Unfortunate Events" stories on CD during my long commutes. The stress brought on by reckless and inconsiderate drivers is somehow lessened when I think of the troubles faced by the Baudelaire children. But...I have found the sound quality and consistency of the recordings by Lemony Snicket himself (as compared to the early recordings done by Tim Curry) to be less than satisfactory. It's rather like eating cold parsnip soup with vinegar on a chilly, rainy day. It's just not what one would expect. In this recording, the reader uses VOLUME rather than voice modulation to differentiate between characters. The problem is that some parts of the story are almost impossible to hear, so one turns up the volume. Then the reader switches to a character voice that is EXTREMELY LOUD AND STARTLING to the listener. It really is a distraction from the stories. I'm on Book the Fifth now, but I may not be able to continue...
Rating: Summary: The Wide Window Review Review: The Wide Window by Lemony Snicket N. Morris P.5 This book is about three unlucky orphans who yet intangle with another unfortunate event. They travel all the way to Lake Lachrymose, where their new guardian lives, Aunt Josephine. She is cautious of everything, and doesn't use electricity. Over the next couple of days, they live in her household, eating chilled cucumber soup. Then one day, they go to the city grocery store, where they encounter their nefarious enemy, Count Olaf. He is dressed up as a boat seller. The orphans know who he really is, but Aunt Josephine is fooled. They keep on trying to tell her, but she won't listen. Then one stormy day, Count Olaf pushes her out the window that's in her house. Then Aunt Josephine leaves a message. She's hiding out in a cave. She only threw a chair out the window, so everyone would think she was dead. The orphans go to find her. They do find her, and start to sail back to shore. The Lachrymose Leeches are very hungry and smell food on her. They eat her up and the orphans are captured by Count Olaf. He almost gains custody of them, but they reveal his disguise. Count Olaf runs away and the story pretty much ends. I liked this book because it had a lot of action in it and also a lot of adventure in it. It didn't go slow, it went fast, with new things happening every time you turned the page. The time when the orphans used the boat to save Aunt Josephine showed the theme expressing adventure. When the Lachrymose Leeches ate Josephine, that showed the theme of action. My favorite part of the book was when the orphans were trying to figure out what the message Aunt Josephine had left behind meant. She had left the message in the letter using grammatical mistakes. Pretty interesting, huh?
Rating: Summary: Jeremy from Richview Middle School Review: The main characters are three orphans, and ther Aunt Josephine who was faking her death, and a man that was trying to kill the aunt so he could get the kids' fortune that their parents passed down to them. The aunt left a note saying who would find a message of where she was hidden out. They steal a boat to go and find her but before they could get to her Captain Sham tried to catch them and kill them before they could get they could get back to land. But a man from the Orphanage came to save them, he called the police on Captain Sham, but he got away before they could catch him. Aunt Josephine and the kids were all safe.I liked this book because their was always action going on, I was always waitingto see what would happen next. Or what would happen to the kids. It also will make you appreciate your parents and for thing that they buy and do for you. Because some kids don't even have parents that love them. But it is great to know that there are people that will help take care and watch over kids that don't have parents.

Rating: Summary: Connor Gives This Book 5Stars Review: This book is the third book of the series and like all of them, they have an unpleasant ending. I liked this book because it had an interesting plot and because of the characters. My favorite character was Klaus because he loves books and so do I. Violet and Sunny were also good. Like all the stories in this series, Count Olaf tries to steal the Baudelaire's fortune but so far is not successful. In this book he tries to steal it by faking Aunt Josephine death and making her write a note saying that she wants Captain Sham (Count Olaf) to be the orphans' caretaker. This book is about three unlucky orphans whose parents died in a fire. They move to Aunt Josephine house. When they were at the market one-day, they see a guy that looks like Count Olaf. He really is Count Olaf but he is in disguise as Captain Sham. The next day they find a letter on the library door saying that Aunt Josephine committed suicide. They find out that it was a secret message that ended up saying Curled Cave. They travel there and find her there. On the way back to the dock, leeches attack them. Captain Sham rescues them but he throws Aunt Josephine over board. And the leeches kill her. Mr. Poe find out that Captain Sham was really Count Olaf in disguise. He runs from them and locks the orphans and him behind a metal gate. This book is good for people who like to read adventure and a little mystery. This book is good for children and young adults. People who read the first three books in this series should read this book for sure. I thought this book was good but not as good as The Reptile Room.
Rating: Summary: What¿s this? It¿s a hidden message in the letter! Review: What's this? It's a hidden message in the letter! The Wide Window is a very good book! It is about 2 sisters and1 brother. Violet, the oldest, Klaus the 2nd oldest, and Sunny the youngest. First the Bouldrilair kids go to their Aunt's house & she is scared of everything. Then she leaves a letter saying she jumped out the window but she really ran away so the kids have to figure out where she went. Some of the exciting parts are when Violet, Klause, and Sunny eat mints (they are allergic to mints) and break out in hives to get more time. Another part is when they find a message in the letter and they go out on a lake in a thunder storm to find her. I think people who like suspenseful stories would like to read this book because it keeps you guessing and you won't want to put the book down. I think this book would get a 9 out of 10.

Rating: Summary: We Want Tim Curry!!!!! Review: My family and I have really enjoyed books 1 and 2. (We listen to them in the car during long trips.) We eagerly anticipated the arrival of book 3 and were pleased with the story but REALLY missed Tim Curry's reading. Even my 6 year old commented on it! She specifically mentioned Mr. Poe's cough, and laughed. She asked why he didn't want to read book 3? Hurt, as if it was Mr. Curry's choice. Though we did find the interview at the end of Book 1 quite funny, we also feel this sort of vehicle is a wonderful and adequate way to enjoy Mr. Snicket's personality. Tim Curry's vibrant reading brings the wonderful stories of Lemony Snicket to their fullest. Please come back! For us, not having Tim Curry do the readings is an unfortunate event!

Rating: Summary: Loved It!! Review: From beginning to end, I was held in the tale. The third book in this series was very exciting to read. I felt the children's frustration. I felt their worry and sadness. This book was better than the 2nd in the series. One thing that I have continuously thought about was ever since their parents died, they've had bad luck. Their parents died in a fire, and I always thought: 'I wonder if Count Olaf had something to do with it.' I mean any bad events the kids went through was the result of Count Olaf interferring directly and/or indirectly. This book confirms my suspicions, but it didn't go into great detail about the fire. Matter of fact, a sort of an admission was made, but nothing else was built on that. What will Lemony Snicket reveal about the truth behind the fire as I continue to read? I can't wait to find out. The one thing I found sweet was that they fought for their Aunt Josephine. They risked their lives even though she barely lifts a finger to help them. And Violet, Kraus, and Sunny were so utterly smart compared to the adults. You would think Mr. Poe would believe the children by now, but no. They still had to prove that Count Olaf was in disguise again. But Count Olaf nearly pulls off his scheme this time. He is resilient and driven for one thing, and I wonder if he will ever succeed? You know what, 'unfortunately' I think he will. Joy.
