Rating: Summary: This is McCarthy at his best. Review: I think when McCarthy started on "The Border Trilogy" he might have been seeking a wider audience since the books were more of an "easy" read. "Blood Meridian" was not simply about violence-- It goes much deeper than that I think. It's about something that "will never die."Perhaps one has to be a bit of an existentialist to really appreciate this book.
Rating: Summary: Savage. Lyrical. Unforgettable. Review: Simply the finest novel about the American West ever written, and one of the finest novels I have ever read. Period. This book is horrific in its imagery, but the language and descriptions are gorgeous beyond belief. Anyone who loves the English language (and has a strong consitution) should read this novel and savor the terrible power of McCarthy's writing. I can honestly say that this is one of the few written works that has really left a unique and indelible mark on my spirit.
Rating: Summary: Engaging language; violence is too much Review: After reading the trillogy, Blood Meridian was disappointing. This book should not be recommended to all - there is no point to that much violence in one novel. McCarthy's use of imagery and the way he crafts his sentences to give the reader as sense of place, history and conflict can be compared to Joyce and Melville. However, after so much violence, it becomes pointless - violence merely for violence's sake.
Rating: Summary: A nightmare Review: We all knew that the old west was a wild, dangerous time and place. This book shows us what no other book or movie could--the extreme violence, murderous outlaws, and utter ruthlessness of that era of American history. The book is also a statement of the evil that will always follow men...
Rating: Summary: War and death make the sad genius of man Review: Know this: Those who find in this book too much darkness and too much blood should realize that this is only because there is too much of the evil and too much wickedness that lives and breathes in our histories and our hearts. This book is unbelieveable and brilliant as it lays out the deepest darkness in the soul of man and yet still is there not in that evening redness a lingering kind of hope?
Rating: Summary: A gifted writer wastes his energy and my time!!!! Review: If you like a book with no redeeming value whatsoever..read this one. I kept reading it first hoping for redemption and then later a desire to have all of the characters destroyed. What a shame after he wrote All the Pretty Horses! He is a gifted author with a grear grasp of the English language, however this book reveals a dark, brooding tormented soul. I'm not opposed to violance....The Wild Bunch is one of my favorite films...however in that story you could relate to the anti heroes. It is not a Moby Dick or The Odyessy..it is a disgrace to compare to those classics!!
Rating: Summary: Great descriptions, but... Review: Actually, I'd give it 2.5 stars. I REALLY liked a lot of his descriptions of the landscape. Very good. But the violence becomes too much at times (and in some cases seems awkward and unrealistic) The characters (aside from The Judge) didn't seem to 'stand out' for me.
Rating: Summary: PURE GENIUS!! Review: Great author. A master of the English language. Every word in this book seemed to be the perfect choice for the situation. After reading McCarthy, everything else is a step down. Descriptions of the landscape were exquisite. I was especially intrigued by the "judge". Physically intimidating, mentally superior, brutally cunning and dreadfully unhinged. I wondered how a man with such exceptional physical and mental attributes could participate in the slaughter of so many. The dark side of human behavior was masterfully and graphically portrayed in this epic saga. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Rating: Summary: stir inferno with the odyssey--puncture Review: Cormac doesn't fill the glass halfway in this one. The guy is a genius w/ imagery. The blood is on tap. The male unconscious is laid naked and proven to be beautifully hideous. An epic.
Rating: Summary: Very dark & very beautiful. Review: Having reread this book , I am awestruck by its prosaic beauty. The descriptions of landscape and offhand brutality confirm to me that the written word is not dying. McCarthy is a master. Read it now ! Read it aloud ! Read it often !
