Rating: Summary: Charming and Intriguing for Both Adults and Children Alike Review: Like many of the other people sharing a review, I first discovered this book as a child. (...)So I picked up a copy today and it's startling how much I remember. The images in this book have a very evocative, dreamy and sureal look to them. They instantly engage you and get the wheels turning in your mind. It's impossible not to make up a story about them. The artwork is fabulous, and almost reminds me of infrared photography because of it's unusual shading and the preternatural glow emanating from some of the subjects. These images will haunt you and stay with you - you'll find yourself thinking about them even when you aren't looking at the book. The fact that so many people have mentioned remembering this book from their school years attests to this book's ability to draw you in and awaken your immagination. It's definately worth space on the bookshelf of kids and creative souls that are kids at heart.
Rating: Summary: So You Want to be a Writer . .. Review: This is the book that got me started writing. About 16 years ago, my English teacher gave us an assignment and this book to base the assignment on. The unique pictures, the sparkling captions and the fascinating titles all served to get me thinking and writing. Two hundred notebooks and countless computer files later, I'm still at it. This is the cure for writer's block, and the answer to dreary days that need some storytelling. The only folks I can see this book not helping are the ones who would prefer NOT to use their imaginations. For them, perhaps television is better. But any person, any age can see countless possibilities from the teasing details present here. This is the book to leave out on the coffee table, to take into the classroom, to keep by the word processor. If you haven't seen it, check it out. And have fun with your stories!
Rating: Summary: A great book and mystery for all ages Review: This book has pictures that were supposedly drawn by an artist who dissapeared before he could turn in the story. An intriguing mystery it captivates younger children and parents. The pictures are surreal and the pictures leave you hanging.
Rating: Summary: mysteries Review: This book not only gets the children thinking but it also makes the teacher wonder what is happening next. The illustrations are dark but so descriptive. It is a book that everytime you look at it you see something different. A must have in a classroom!
Rating: Summary: Find a spot on your shelf for this book! Review: Chris Van Allsburg tells an intriguing story of finding fourteen inspiring drawings from a children's book publisher. A gentleman named Harris Burdick brought the drawings to the publisher. He was supposed to return the following day with the stories that went along with these drawings, but he never came back. All that accompanies the drawings are a title and one sentence caption. You cannot help but look at the drawings and start wondering what they are about. Some look like they are the start to an adventure and some end long journeys. Some are even a (little) bit scary. This is the magic of the book. As soon as you look at the drawings, you start to imagine and think of other worlds and adventures. Your child will be able to verbalize or write the stories to go along with the drawings. These sketches allow you to go in hundreds of different directions, allowing the stories to change each time you visit them. My five-year-old daughter was even imagining what could have happened to Harris Burdick to keep him from returning with the stories. She had no trouble at all with the book's unique concept and immediately went to work on helping solve the mysteries of the book's drawings. This book is wonderfully unique and will open doors to places in your child's imagination and mind that are too seldom challenged by most children's books. Find a place for this book in your family's time.
Rating: Summary: BEST book! Review: The mysteries of Harris Burdick is great. If you want to write a storie for kids, this has some great start ups. There are-but not limited to-"Archie Smith, Boy Wonder," "Missing in Venice," and "Uninvited Guests." Want to know the captions or pictures? Buy this book! Note: These are the only parts of the stories known, so if you want the stories, you're out of luck.
Rating: Summary: Story Starters Review: This is a great book to get kids imaginations going. The pictures and titles can be used as story starters for any age group. I have not met a child or adult who could resist the pictures.
Rating: Summary: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick Review: Never before have I read a story as intriguing or thought-provoking as The Mysteries of Harris Burdick . The pictures hold a magical quality of intense beauty and mystery. Each one is full of detail and causes the imagination to go to work. When I look at one of the drawings, my mind immediately begins to develop an elaborate story, as will yours. The title and caption add to the suspense and are as much a part of the story as the drawing. In the past, I have always had trouble coming up with ideas for my writing. This book gave me hundreds of wonderful stories. Whether you are old or young, a writer or just a reader, I would definitely recommend this book.

Rating: Summary: A Great Book To Get The Brain Working Review: When Van Allsburg wrote The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, he wrote a book that would cause millions of Americans to realize that they had an imagination. An imagination that they never thought that they had until one day when they glanced at the pictures in The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, and their brains, by surprise, started to imagine stories that went along with the pictures. The first time I heard of this book was by my Creative Writing teacher and I thought that it was very interesting. She gave us a picture and we were to write a story just by using our imaginations. I think that this book is great because you can write stories for the pictures now and again in the future when you are older and see how much your views on life and your outlook on the world around you have changed. It is a bonus for all those writers out there who just seem to have a hard time starting a story becausing the pictures give you a place to start. This book will keep your brain awake and thinking of all the possibilities that one little picture can hold.
