Rating: Summary: If you are one who analyzes detail, this isn't your book. Review: I found the rave reviews for this book, hosestly, extreamlysurprising. The book was sad, and left me feeling depressed, so muchso, that there is little chance I will ever read it again. I found many of the "laws" on population and restrictions unrealistic and poorly thought through. At the end, when Luke ventures into the Talbot's for the last time, the occurences described to the boy by Jen's father seem almost expected, and certainly not how I feel a real family would react to the atrocius tragedy even under the unusual circumstances of the "shadow children". It is equally unbelievable that the Government (which I preceived to be OURS, even though that is only an implication) would commit such a heinous slaughter and cleaning it all up "before the tourists arrived" . Also, I cannot believe that a girl of 12 or 13 would drive eight hours in a car. Now, if you are the kind of person who likes this kind of book (almost a mix between Sci-fi and fantasy) then I suggest it (afterall, it moved me in such a way, immediately after I read it, I was so filled with emotion, I had to write this), but if you are a person who is analytical, and hates depressing ending, stay away from this book, or you will be greatly disappointed.
Rating: Summary: Just read this one a second time and still loved it! Review: I'm including a review of this book in a handbook for parents and teachers I'm writing about Young Adult literature so I decided to reread it for the review. I was impressed with this novel the first time, and I loved it even more the second time. This time I picked up more on the foreshadowing I had missed or forgotten the first time in my haste to catch the storyline. Bravo to the author for this well-crafted YA novel!
Rating: Summary: Among The Hidden Review: This suspenseful, unpredictable book is filled with the adventures and courage of a third born young boy named Luke. This book teaches you a lot about living in poverty. You will get hooked as soon as you start to read just like we did!
Rating: Summary: A very good book! Review: This book was very good. The idea of the story was excellent. It is about a boy , who lives in a 3 society where they only let familys have 2 kids due to famine. The story was about courage and bravery. I hope to read more about this author.
Rating: Summary: Another great book by Margaret Peterson Haddix Review: Like Lois Lowry's The Giver, Among the Hidden reads like Orwell's 1984 for middle school readers. The difference is that, unlike The Giver or 1984, Among the Hidden leaves its protagonist (and its readers) with hope for a better future. With books like Among the Hidden, Don't You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey!, and Leaving Fishers, Margaret Peterson Haddix is establishing herself as one of the best and most versatile writers for YA's today.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Don't read this without tissues! Review: This book was awesome! I hardly ever cry when I read books, but I had tears streaming down my face. It was a wonderful (but frightening) view of the way the United States could end up in the future.
Rating: Summary: Among the Great Book Review: This was such a great book. The story is fascinating.Who wouldof new a third child that is band from life it self could have so manyconnections to the outside world as Jen does.Luke has no clue about how she has all of these connections until Jen tells him all about the population police and about how they can't really tell if a third child is watching tv or if he/she is on aol/internet.Although Jen had a good idea about the rally and I like the way they think in the book.
Rating: Summary: A kid's 1984 Review: This is an excellent book about a time of government control supposedly brought on by population problems and Food Wars. Luke is a forbidden third child, whose existence is sheltered by his family's rural life. Then the government seizes part of their land to build luxury houses for the "Barons." These people of privilege have many things ordinary folks don't. One of the "Barons" also seems to have something Luke's family has, a third child.
Rating: Summary: Among the Hidden Review: Very good book! Among the Hidden is a book for all ages. With all the emotional adventure, Luke, who is a third chlid meets another one and decides that they will either get the goverment to make third children legal, or die trying.
Rating: Summary: Chilling Review: This frightening book is a good way to introduce gifted students to the questions about government control in our lives. It's a bit stark and terrifying for my fifth graders, but I still love it, and would suggest that you read it with your kids.
