Summary: Not worth the money
Review: First of all, out of the 1,046 or however many words that are touted as SAT vocab words, less than 10% are words an enterinf freshman (high school, of course) should not already know. I mean, 'pallor'? Seriously. The story is not the best, (...).
If you have money to throw around, go ahead and buy it. After about 50 pages, you might actually find a word you didn't know.

Summary: Not Helpful
Review: I (...)like the previous person, was assigned this book for required reading. The SAT vocabulary used in the story is simple, 5th graders should be able to comprehend what these words mean. The plot is dull and insipid, and the author strains to use the SAT vocabulary, making the dialogue seem too unreal (no one that age uses those words in their daily vocabulary) and eventually taking away from the story, making it a hard and unhelpful read.

Summary: Great way to study for the SATs!
Review: I bought this book for my daughter who is taking the SATs in a month. She loved it! Its a story which contains more than 1000 SAT vocabulary words. She said the story was interesting and it was much easier to learn and understand new vocabulary words in the context of a story as opposed to trying to memorize a list. I'm recommending this book to every high schooler I know. I can't believe this is the only book of its kind out there.

Summary: What a Great Read!
Review: I orginally pick-up the Ring of McAllister to see if it would help my teenagers develop the vocabulary necessary to score well on the SAT. Now, having read the Ring, I know it will improve their vocabulary. Indeed, my vocabulary markedly improved, and I teach college English.

And who would have guessed that an educational book could be such a great read! Once I started The Ring, I couldn't put it down. The improved vocabulary is a fringe benefit. My teenagers and I think the story is the real draw.

I eagerly await Mr. Marantz's next book.

Summary: Good for the SAT
Review: I'll be taking the SAT over the summer and am dreading the vocab sections. My mom just got me the Ring, and I finished it in a day. I'm probably going to read it a few times to make sure the words stick in my head. But I'm already feeling better about my vocab.

Summary: SAT words are good but the story is bad.
Review: I'm 18 and I just finished reading this book. I gave it two stars only because of the amount of SAT words. The book is really bad and to make it worse, it was mandatory for a class I took. I was really disapointed at the story line and I was expecting a much better read. The SAT words were great and there is a lot of them, but I found it more enjoyable to read magazines even though there are much less SAT words. However, everybody learns differently. I learn SAT words with flash cards while other people learn SAT words by reading books. Its not a long book and it can be educational, so read it for the SAT words. Remember those SAT words but forget the story.

Summary: Great Concept
Review: Learning words in context, in the form of a novel, is a terrific idea. I agree that it would be even better if the definitions appeared on the same page as the words--as was done in one of the other new "vocabulary builder in the form of a novel" offerings--The Wizard of Oz Vocabulary Builder.
