Rating: Summary: Stones in Water Review: Stones in Water starts out with an Italian boy named Roberto, his freind Memo, his brother Sergio, and his other friend Samuel, who is Jewish, going to a movie. They go into town to see a western movie, but German soldiers come in and take all of them to a German work camp. If anyone found out that Samuel was Jewish, they would all get killed, so Samuel adopts the name Enzo, so that people think that he is Christian. Memo and Sergio a taken away somewhere else but Samuel and Roberto are kept together. Samuel and Roberto start stealing eggs from a barn, and eat them all raw. When they are caught doing this, they are both taken away to another work camp. At this camp, Samuel freezes to death, and Roberto runs away . From here Roberto meets a boy in a town, whose family had been killed by soldiers, along with the rest of the town. Roberto takes the boy along with him to the next town, where he runs away, finds a boat, and canoes down a river. Roberto meets a Roman soldier, who had run away from the army because he thought what they were doing was wrong. Roberto befriends the Roman, and they both head towards Italy. In the end, Roberto decides that he will join the partigiano, a group of people against the war. They do things such as blow up bridges and set fires to scare German soldiers. I thought that this book was really good. It had a great plot and was very suspensful. One thing that i don't really like about this book is that it was sort of predictable. I thought i was pretty obvious that Roberto was going to make it all the way to Italy somehow from a work camp in Germany. This I thought was unrealistic. In conclusion, I enjoyed reading this book, and recommend you to read it.
Rating: Summary: STONES IN WATER Review: STONES IN WATER takes place in World War 2 mostly in a work camp. Roberto the main character gets money for his friends his brother and him for a filmstrip. When the strip was over German solders came and took all the kids including roberto and his friends. Roberto got split up from his brother but he wasen't alone he went Roberto's friend memo, and Roberto whent with Enzo a jewish boy. The Germans took Roberto and Enzo to a work camp. Camp was Real hard for Enzo. Enzo died in camp that's when Roberto finally siad he was going to sneak out of camp. I think this book is for 11-15 year olds because it has big words and it has lots to understand. This book is worth the money you spend on it because if you like reading about the holocaust and if you like historical fiction then this is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: Wow... Review: The amazon book description accurately portrays the storyline. I read this aloud to my 4th and 5th grade boys and they loved it. To them it was an interesting adventure story. I saw it as a well written historical fiction book that really taught them a lot about wwII relationships between the eastern european countries and USSR. For example: Italy is "friendly" with Germany, so why do German soldiers kidnap Italian boys and send them to work in the Ukraine? Teach your children some history and geography and read this interesting story! Well written and exciting.

Rating: Summary: Robin's review Review: The book Stones in Water is a wonderful book which is a mixture of an adventure into the wild and a touching story about to friends separated by race. Stones in Water is set in WWII. The main character is a boy named Roberto who lives in Venice. He has a Jewish friend, Samule and does not understand the implications of that during the war. He is almost oblivious to his surroundings. He has no idea of the atrocity of the war. It is not really an important part of his life. This changes when German soldiers storm his theater while he is watching an American movie. He soon finds himself in a work camp with instructions to keep quiet and do as the others do from his brother Sergio. He soon finds himself working every day on a small ration of food. He and his friend Samule trade there food since Samule, who no changed his name to Enzo, is kosher. Roberto soon sees a group of Jews who are being held in a pen and is determined to help them. Roberto and Enzo have a system so they help to little girls. In return the girl gives him a stone. Soon Roberto leaves with Enzo and goes to another work camp where Enzo dies because of the cold. Roberto is so mad he leaves. Now one catches him as he escapes. He travels south back toward Italy. As he travels he meets Germans soldiers and finally meets a boy in Ukraine who leads him to many villages. He finally finds a river and a boat and starts his way back to Venice. On the way an Italian deserter forces himself on Roberto and so he comes along too.
I thought this book was a very good book it showed many different points of view inn World War II. I especially like how the character was an Italian citizen and not a usually persecuted person in that war. That showed how awful the Germans really were not only did they kill people because of there race they captured and worked there allies children so they could get more workers. I also liked how he did not die and he resolved to help more people later in his life even though he could have just shot other Germans.
Rating: Summary: Stones in Water; a great book Review: The book Stones in Water is about a boy named Roberto's struggle during World War II. He goes to an American film in is home town of Venice. He goes with his best friend Samuele, who is Jewish, his brother Sergio, and his other friend Memo. The Germans raided the movie theatre and they where taken to a work camp. The four of them were split up. Samuele and Roberto managed to stay together. Samuele pretends to be Jewish and changes his name to Enzo. They have to learn to survive and they have to find a way home. The story is historically accurate. I think it is a bit to historically accurate. It becomes a little to unbelievable. Everything that happens in the war happens to him. It is kind of like he is always in the right spot at the right time. Another unbelievable thing is that he survives starvation and being attacked by rabid wolves. Other than the fact that everything that happens in the war happens to him part, this book is actually quite good. It keeps you very interested. It is full of excitement till the very end. You wonder if Roberto and Samuele will survive. It is historically correct which the book should be. It taught me some things about World War II that I did not know before. I thought that the book was overall very good. I will definitely read it again.
Rating: Summary: Stones in water Review: The book was great. I loved it, its probally is the best book ever read. I liked the book because of the way she decribed what happend. My eyes were glued to the book, I could not put it down. the best part was when the little girl in the pen got her lips ripped in the barbed wire and her dress got bloody. Then the teenager pulled her back and the little girl had a shed of tears coming out. That was my favorite part. Thats all I have.
Rating: Summary: A good book. Review: This book is about a boy named Roberto and his friend Enzo. They were taking to a labor camp and badly treated. Enzo endes up dying of the cold weather. Roberto endes up breaking out and tries to go back home. If you like what it is about READ IT!
Rating: Summary: Stones in Water Review: This book is about a boy named Roberto, his two friends Samuele and Memo, and his older brother Sergio who are taken from a movie and put on a train which is sent to sation where Roberto and Samuele were separated from Sergio and Memo. Samuele and Roberto are taken to a work camp. Where Roberto and Samuele dig a tarmac for the Germans. They get sent to another work camp where unfortunatly Samuele is killed. So Roberto escapes from the camp, and meats a little ukrainian boy who leads him to a town where roberto takes a small boat and goes down a river so he can try to get to the black sea. On the way there he meets an Italian soldier named Maurizio who helps him reach the coast of Bulgaria. I thought that this was overall and ok book. I liked how the author really showed me what war was like and how terrible it really can be. Like when the German soldiers killed the boys that wanted to get off of the train. She also showed me that even though, in such a terrible time where everthing seems to always be bad, that there is still hope. The things I didnt like about the book was that We never really knew what happened to Roberto and Maurizio. Its like a huge cliffanger thats never answered. I also disliked how Roberto wanted to head for the Black sea when he could head towards home. It would make more sense to go towards your destination than go farther away from it and then go to it.
