Summary: Did he or didn¿t he
Review: That will always remain the question. This week John Knowles passed away and took the answer to his grave. Set in an all-boys prep school in New Hampshire during WWII; this classic American novel centers around two young boys coming of age. It is the summer sessions before their senior year when a terrible accident leaves one of the boys crippled for life. The question is was the act perpetrated with malice. Exactly what really happened?

A SEPARATE PEACE has been a must read for many high school students for years. After hearing that the author left it to our imaginations I thought how appropriate to allow us to see it from our own point of view. A quick easy read, I read it in a day. It brought me back to my younger days. A wonderful book. Kelsana 12/02/01

Summary: One of the Most deadly dull books I've ever read.
Review: I was forced into reading this book in Language Arts, and I can honestly say it's the worst book I've ever read for school, I almost didnt read it at all.. I was prepared to get my Zero with pride, but I thought maybe it would get a little better, I was wrong. The characters were fake, the plot was awful. Worst of all, the forgiving scene was impossible. when you hear that you know whats going to happen from then on, you dont need to read it any longer.
Unfortunately I, like Gene *mutters* WANT that A. I need that A, so I read it through and now I am reviewing it with as much honesty as I can. the only character I almost liked was Leper, and that was because I felt sorry for him.
If you have to read it, my condolenses, if you want to read a slow dull book, go right ahead and pick it up as soon as possible.

Summary: Themes, yes; Fun to read, no
Review: Books are supposed to be something you enjoy reading. "A Separate Peace" was not something I enjoyed reading. I am an 8th grade student in the Trenton, NJ area and this book is part of our English reading requirements. Not only did the students not enjoy reading this, but the teacher didn't either; I could tell. The book does teach valuble life themes, such as friendship, trust, revenge, etc., but it is not anything intersting, much less fun, to read. This book bored me out of my mind, but I really didn't have a choice whether I wanted to read it or not. If you're buying this book to read for pleasure, think before you spend the money.

Summary: I'm being generous by giving it one star.
Review: This book has no plot. Okay, then does _A Separate Peace_ make up with deep characterizations and beautiful style. No. The style is techinically perfect, but lacks any verve. The characters are lame. The 16 year olds act like annoying 13 year olds. Gene is immature and I wouldn't bet money on his heterosexuality. Phineas is an idealized best friend as oppose to a character who is realistic. Everyone else is a stereotype (the smart, nerdy kid, the jock who is a jerk etc)....

Summary: Good
Review: A Separate Peace is a fairly good novel. Every chapter contains quite a few "noteable quotables" and every chapter ends with suspense. However, the beginning half is a little boring and it drove me crazy how immature these 16-year-olds were. I think that Knowles did too much foreshadowing in the beginning, as it soon became obvious who was going to die. It is a good story, but it sometimes seemed longer than it needed to be. It's worth reading, but is not one of my favorites.

Summary: The best book I've read in a long time!
Review: This is the most wonderful book I've read in a long time! If you don't have the time to read and ponder this book well, please don't read it! Do this one justice!

Summary: The Separate Peace
Review: In John Knowles Novel The Separate Peace, Knowles uses many literary devices throughout the novel some being his tones, themes, and his use of symbolism and foreshadowing. Knowles did a good job of using each literary devices throughout the novel. Knowles had a fast moving climax it got to the point. The book had a short plot but had gotten a lot better towards the end. The climax being that Gene breaks the branch of the tree and then making Finny fall and shatter his leg. Gene was the cause of Finny's death because if he had not broken the limb that Finny was on, he would not have a broken his leg and therefore would not need to have surgery on it. Knowles tone was very sad and depressing, he wrote with a lot of attitude in his work. Some themes in the Separate Peace would be that every human has or creates an enemy for themselves and go to war with. Everyone has an enemy except Finny who is the king of innocence, who refuses to believe that anyone could be his enemy. Finny's death is almost predictable; his innocence makes him too good for the war sometimes. Knowles use of symbolism is very interesting he uses World War II as a symbol. Each character eventually finds a war and an enemy, they would spend their lives trying to defend themselves away from their enemy. It seems that Finny is immune to this spirit of hatetrede, which is why he denies that the war exists. The spirit of war can sometimes hold influence over the school only after Finny's death. A Separate Peace was pretty good. Knowles showed the difference between good and evil. The Author should have let Finny live at the end of the story because he made a big impact in the community.

Summary: Pretty good book, if you have the patience to read it
Review: A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a novel about two boys in a boarding school during World War II. The book is wonderfully written, but I must say it doesn't seem interesting to me. The characterization and the narrative technique are good, but the plot is poor. The beginning of the book is tedious, the climax is not exciting at all and the end is the only surprise in the novel. I didn't enjoy reading this book but I have to admit it is a nice "peace" of work.

Summary: A totally captivating piece of writing
Review: I can't say enough about this book! Yes I had my doubts, as does every junior in highschool when thier english teacher gives them a novel to read. This book however, was something that I have never encountered. For some reason I felt connected with it, and with the characters. Maybe the common denominator was our age. Maybe it was the intricate and confusing relationship between friends that many young people experience. All I am sure of is that "A Separate Peace" is a book that I will never forget. The foreshadowing used in the first chapter is amazing. After I finished the book I went back to the beginning chapters and saw how Knowles wove these symbols and references into chapter one to express the events to come. I first truly noticed this when I read this excerpt, obviously refering to the stairs in the Academic Building where Finny fell the second time... "The marble must be unusually hard. That seemed very likely, only too likey, although with all my thought about these stairs this exceptional hardness had not occured to me. It was surprising that I had overlooked that fact, that crucial fact." (3). While my class was on chapter 4 I took the book home and couldn't help but finish it that night. Books that can hold my attention in such a way are few and far between. I know I will read it again and again. I have read many novels in the short 17 years I've been around and I will read many more...but I know this book will remain one of my favorites for the rest of my life. I highly recommend this book to anyone of any age. It's a book that has so much to tell, and I'm grateful to say that I was able to hear it...loud and clear.
