Summary: Maybe it would be OK for a 3rd grader...
Review: The Bad Beginning... well, it wasn't just a bad beginning. The whole time I was reading it I looked for the book to start getting better and it never did. Sure the age level is 9-12 and I am 15, but I have read reviews that said older children and adults would love it too. Lies. Maybe if you were my age and had a reading level of a 10 year old. Then it may have been ok. The overall idea of the story was good I thought, no happy endings. But the way the author wrote the book. I just really disliked the way the it was written and it was a waste of the 1/2 hour it took for me to read it all. I will not be reading any more of these books. And about some people comparing "A Series of Unfortunate Events" to Harry Potter! Please. Don't waste your time on this book if you are older than 12. Read Harry Potter of LOTR. Thank You.

Summary: The Beginning of Misery!
Review: This book is the first book in a series called the Series of Unfortunate Events. It is about three children named Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire. It starts out on Briny Beach where the three children are standing watching the beautiful view when Mr. Poe, a good friend of their parents, comes and tells them that their parents have died in a serious house fire and they have to come live with them for a few days. After that they have to live with their distant relative, Count Olaf. The children do not know what is coming in their new life. I am ten years old and love Lemony Snicket. I liked this book because it is full of surprises and I could never put it down.I also like it because it is written by my favorite author. This is probably the best book you will ever read.

Summary: Nothing good
Review: This book is about three kids whose parents died in a fire so they had to go live with one of their relatives. His name was Count Olaf. The three children,Sunny, who is a baby slightly bigger than a watermelon; Klaus who is eight; and Violet, who is fourteen, who go to live with Count Olaf. The three children have a fortune that their parents left when they died. Count Olaf is after their fortune and they don't know it. I like this book because it's really adventurous and it really had you turning the pages to see what happens next. There are 9 other books in the series. I've read up to the 8th one and they get better as you go.

Summary: The Beggining was Bad
Review: This is the forst out of what will be thirteen books in a Series of Unfortunate Events. The series is of the woe and pain suffered by the Baudelaire children. Many of there miseries are just about summed uo after the fire that killed there parents when there forced to live with Mr.Poe and have itchy clothing. But then they are forced to live with a villian whose out to steal there fortune. This book was in my oppinion very fast-paced, But anyone who likes tales of woe would deffinately like it.

Summary: Engaging, yes, but very odd
Review: I agree with previous reviewers that these books, while engaging enough to read in one sitting, are quite off-putting. I find the author's tendency to define words annoying. I will, however, admit that I get a certain amusement from the tongue-in-cheek, understated, British humor. Granted, I am an adult with a child of my own, but I don't think I would have enjoyed this series as a kid. The books have references that are way over the heads of the recommended reading level and very disconcerting for us adults. Klaus and Sunny (von Bulow, perhaps?), I mean really! Sure, Harry Potter has a dark side, but the dark side makes sense. These books seem to be misery for misery's sake. We have enough of that in this world, without promoting it in our pre-teen children. Try reading the "Anne of Green Gables" series, the "Chronicles of Narnia," or even "The Hobbit." There's plenty of trouble in all of these, but plenty of fun, too.

Summary: The Bad Beginning
Review: The Bad Beginning
By Lemony Snicket
Publisher: Harpor Collins

The Bad Beginning is about three children whose mansion burned down when they were at the beach. The Bad Beginning is a realistic fiction book that is part of a series. After the fire, the three children became orphans because they think both parents are dead. So, they were sent to their parents best friends. After a couple of weeks, the orphan's friends sent them to their relative house, where they lived in this book. The orphan's relative and their relative tries to steal the orphan's fortune.

Klaus likes to read books, and he is really smart and gets along with almost with anybody. Sunny is a little baby that has four sharp teeth that she uses to climb up walls. Violet is a mechanic and builds stuff really fast, Violet is also the oldest Baudilair orphan. Count Olaf is a mean old man who is always trying to get the Baudilair fortune. Count Olaf is a relative who has been twice removed from the Baudilair family.

I liked this book because it was really exciting . It is really slow in the beginning but it is worth sticking with. This book was a page turner because it was exciting and it was a mystery. It is a good reading book for just about everybody, and it would make a good book to read aloud.

Summary: almost as scary as Harry Potter!
Review: This book is filled with adventure and excitement! If you pick it up, you can't put it down! It's creepy, yet fascinating at the same time. The three Baudelaire children have to stay with the dreaded Count Olaf. He tortures them to get their fortune and threatens Violet to marry him. The ending really makes you want to read the next book in the series.
