Summary: Actually, Not Such a Bad Beginning
Review: The ineffable Lemony Snicket has begun chronicling a series of unfortunate events with A Bad Beginning, which, as a first book, is not so bad at all. The story is swiftly told and cleverly written and the atmosphere created at the novel's start is sustained throughout. The climax somewhat lacked the cleverness of the majority of the novel but that is a small quibble (a word here that means a nit-picking reader looking for something to criticize to justify his review). This book will lead this reader to explore the entire series to see if the style of writing or these characters' adventures continue to entertain time and again. That will be the true test for this good beginning to an interesting series.

Summary: Both depressing and hilarious.
Review: Wonderful! Not only are these books depressing, but also hilarious! Such a refreshing departure from happy-go-lucky kids' books. Though I am an adult, I enjoyed this book very much and am going to read the others in the series.

I appreciate the way the author defines the more advanced vocabulary in the book -- it saves readers the trouble of locating and lumbering through a dictionary.

Summary: Possibly One Of The Most Hilarious Things I've Ever Read
Review: There are a lot of one- and two-star reviews for this book, calling it dark, depressing, and overall just needlessly sadistic. I just want you to know that they are all entirely correct; if you're looking for a bland and sickeningly cheerful story where against all possibility everything magically turns out right in the end, you should very well heed the warning on the back of the book, put it in some forgotten dresser, and pick up Harry Potter or its like. Just take care so as Lord Voldemort doesn't frighten you.

However, if you are a more strong-stomached reader, one who enjoys books where bad things happen to good people on the first page, where it's darkest just before it goes pitch-black, and where, just when it looks entirely hopeless, the villain has your baby sister in a birdcage, than you'll enjoy this book immensely. And remember, these are fictional characters, so there is nothing morally wrong with laughing at their misfortune.

Buy this book. Buy the series. Buy the Unauthorized Autobiography. Than get some Terry Pratchett. That man's a comic genius!

Summary: The Bag Beggining
Review: I loved this book. It does not have a happy ending and very few happy parts in it. Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler) is a very good writer. I can't wait for the movie to come out in 2003. Jim Carrey is supposed to play Count Olaf.

Summary: The start of a fantastic series
Review: I thought that The Bad Beginning was a fantastic book. It is filled with suspense and action. Lemony Snicket's description is very refreshing and entertaining. As mentioned in the title this book is the beginning of a fantastic series. Excellent book!

Summary: If You're Looking for Excitement...
Review: I have read the first four books in A Series of Unfortunate Events and I am a great fan of Lemony Snickets' books, but this is my favourite out of the first four books. Since it's the first book, you should read it first. The series will make more sense to you, because the secrets are all in the first book.

The Bad Beginning is about three little children. Violet Baudelaire was the oldest. She was 14 years of age, and loved inventing things. Klaus was the middle one, who was 12 years old, and loved reading. The youngest Baudelaire was Sunny. She loved to bite things with her four sharp teeth.

The children were all on the beach one day, when suddenly, Mr.Poe (a friend of their parents) came by and said: 'I'm afraid I've got some bad news for you, your parents have just died in a terrible fire. I've made some arrangements, and you'll have to be sent to a distant relative named Count Olaf.' (Just by that name, you can tell he's evil!)

At their new home, they were like slaves to Count Olaf. But Count Olaf had a very nice next door neighbour, where the three Baudelaires spent their time when they had nothing else to do.

The three children got a huge fortune from their parents after they died. But they could only use the fortune when Violet became of age. Count Olaf schemed to marry Violet (illegally), so he could steal the money, kill the children, and run away with his associates.

Count Olaf is really greedy, especially when it comes to the Baudelaire fortune. He would do anything to get his hands on that money! And I mean anything!

This book is really good. If you don't believe me, well, a lot of people hate reading! In fact, they hate it so much that they loathe it! But the only books they like to read are...? You guessed it! The Series of Unfortunate Events!!!

The best character, (well, according to me) is Count Olaf, because he is so mean and nasty. Who knows when he'll show up and give you a fright! The worst character in the book is Mr. Poe, because he's boring and when the children need him, he's not there to help!

But the book is still really good. It's so good that it's no wonder kids are reading it everywhere!

Summary: This book makes you "melt" in suspense
Review: I am a fifth grade student at Waldron Mercy Academy(JCM).

This book is called "The Bad Beginning". This book is a sure page turner! When I was reading this book I was so hooked onto it that my mom came home and I didn't notice until twenty-five minutes after she got in. If you are lokking for a happy book put this book down. This is filled with suspense and a whole lot of unhappy parts. This book is about three kids whose parents die in a fire when they were on the beach. Their bank consultant Mr. Poe tries to find a good home and a good person to look after them . The guys name is Count Olaf. Mr. Poe picked the wrong guy to look after them. This guy is a very evil guy. Count Olaf tries to steal the kids' money that their parents left behind for them. He has a good plan, but will it work against these tricky kids? Read the book to find out.

Summary: 10 Times Better Then Harry Potter!!!
Review: This book is my favorite on Earth! Well, actually I LOVE the series, but anyway. If you're looking for a great book to read buy this one. They aren't very hard or long. My 3rd grade brother read them in 2nd grade. They are full of suspense and you never want to put them down.
The story starts at Briny Beach, when Violet, Klaus and Sunny learn that their parents have died in a fire. They have to live with their banker finds a place for them to live. When he finally does they're really happy because they dread Poe's house. They go to live with Count Olaf. Read the book to find out the rest.
I have got at least 5 people to start reading these books and no one has regretted it. Even my dad reads these books! GO BUY THEM!!!

Summary: Better that Harry Potter!
Review: This book is an excallent book along with the other 8 books. This makes you want to read on and never stop. I personally went crazy until the 9th book came out and will be crazy until the 10th is out. Lemony Snicket talks to the reader with his own made up personal experience and explains things. If you have read Harry Potter, I highly suggest these books! To learn more before reading them.

Summary: Better than Potter
Review: This book is the best book ever written for children. It is filled with suspense and suspicion. From wonderful day at the beach to dead horrible day at the house of Count Olaf. While you read these you will be encouraged to read the other 8. I highly reccomend this book to all the readers out there.
