Rating: Summary: Good Humor Review: Quite simply....a funny book. One of the few so called "humor" books that actually makes you laugh. So far I've read this novel and "Neverwhere" by Gaiman, and in both the characters are much more appealing than the actual surrounding story line. Gaiman (and I guess Pratchett, although I'm not too familiar with him) has a knack for creating unique, cartoonish characters that project their image right off the page and into your imagination. You don't read his books, you view them. I guess that talent comes from years working as a graphic novelist. Very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: I won't add any more insight, but I just wanted to say.... Review: You're a sap if you don't love this book. ;-) It's the only comedy that I've had to stop reading so I could recover from the extreme fits of laughter I incurred. Mr. Gaiman and Mr. Pratchett are both gifted writers, and I'm glad that they got together to create this little treasure. Get one for yourself and several more for all your friends and family!
Rating: Summary: Hitchhiker's guide to the Apocalypse Review: I bought this book because I'd loved everything I'd read by Neil Gaiman. It ranks up there with some of the best purchases I've made. The style seemed a lot like Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, which I absolutely loved. Pretty much everything is said tongue-in-cheek, but never gets stale. The irreverent way that the book looks at all of the players of the final battle is hilarious. The hellhound become a pooch obsessed with small mammals. The devil's main guy isn't sure that he wants the world to end, and the archangel....well, he lost his flaming sword. I can't say enough about this book. It's funny. Very funny and I love reading it over again.
Rating: Summary: r e a d i t ! Review: The most WEIRED book I've read over a loooong period of time. It has it all. You won't only read this book once, mostlikely 2 or 3 times. Enjoy it!
Rating: Summary: Hilarious and poignant both. Review: I've read Terry Pratchett before and consider him one of the funnier authors I've run across. I had not read anything by Neil Gaiman but based on the recommendations here, I picked up the novel. This book is... perfect for me on many levels. It's funny without truly being irreverent. While I don't believe in the Christian God, angels, demons, hell, armageddon, etc, I feel that if there _were_ such things that they'd be a lot closer to this book than they would be as taught in Sunday School. There really is a serious message (or fifty) in this novel. For me, it seemed to be that humans are in the end responsible for their own miseries and triumphs. As a recommendation, read the prologue and if you're offended, don't bother reading. Myself, I found the prologue indicative of the rest of the book: funny, yet with an ending that left an indelible image in my mind.
Rating: Summary: the ineffable plan Review: what if the good lord (blessed be his name, blah blah blah) had intended for the antichrist to rise? to test his world. and what if he put two bungling angels (one not fallen, so much as sauntered vaguely downwards) in charge of raising him. this is the backdrop for "Good Omens". the antichrist gets lost in a mixup at the hospital (by none other than satanic nuns, mind you) and Aziriphale and Crowley (the angels listed in order of non fallenness) raise the wrong kid. but somewhere brewing in the suburbs of deepest england, an evil brews. an evil that just wants to be a kid and have fun.
Rating: Summary: Like potato chips, you'll have to get your own bag* *book Review: I believe I have just finished reading this book for the eighth time. This time I read the paperback edition because my mom felt that since I'm now living away from home, I should have my own copy of this book. I have read it once or twice a year since Mom discovered the hard cover edition at a used bookstore. It is inconceivable for me to believe someone would actually give this wonderful book away, but I'm glad they did because I may never have found out about it if they hadn't. Each time I read it, I discover nuances I hadn't noticed earlier. As a teenager who is still in an educational system, I find that as I learn more in general I find more in this book. It is one of the wittiest and, to borrow a phrase from Adam, brilliant books I've ever read. It is perhaps THE best book I'll ever read. I only wish there were a few more stars with which to rate this book. I highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: Brings out the best in both authors... Review: This collaboration seems to bring out the best in both authors. It is continuously funny, in an effective way, and is particularly effective in taking on pseudoscience, which is an inherently comical field whose practitioners are painfully humorless. It's the end of the world, and not many of the characters are aware of what's happening or getting ready to happen any moment. Immortal radio comic genius Jack Benny used to have a running joke about how awful his film THE HORN BLOWS AT MIDNIGHT was. Here's a sort of variant of the theme of Benny's film, updated to the 1990s. It's far from awful! In fact this is my favorite Terry Pratchett novel.
Rating: Summary: Simply the best Review: This book is by far one of the best, and without a doubt in the world belongs in everyone's bookshelf. Everything about it just screams funny, as well as thoughtful. The different characters will have you stopping to think twice about the value of the human race. The humor ranges from the funny(Dog) to the outrageous(Agnes' revenge) and will keep you in stitches from start to finish. Once I started reading this book I literally couldn't put it down, and read it from cover to cover. The only advice I have is get two copies, I haven't gotten mine back from by friend yet(Yes you BJ), and I want to re-read it again!
Rating: Summary: good omens Review: Excellent book. There are other excellent books by Terry, but read this! It's worth it. You'll be glad you did.
