Rating: Summary: A Great Book! Review: John Knowles wrote an outstanding novel by the name of a Seperate Peace. Taking a classic situation between right and wrong, he analyzes the core of human nature and their problems. His heavy symbolism shows a much more thorough theme than what the mere 196-page novel portrays at first glance. Although easy to read, to get something out of the story one must pay attention and try to connect different events. The only downfall to the story at all arises when the readers tries to recieve the full potential of the story without realizing the amount of effort that must be put into the piece of work. Overall, this novel deserves every reader's attention at least once.
Rating: Summary: emotionally stirring but action-wise not a true War Book Review: Knowles' first hand account of War Time in a similar situation shows quite vividly. Every character seems so true-to-life, this book might be mistaken for an autobiography. All the feelings and emotions of true life come packed inside this small 196 page book. Knowles' portrays the stresses of war quite well, and uses many symbols and foreshadowing. Yet, I believed the novel was missing one key element that keeps a War Time novel true to its' name. The book had absolutely no action! A few emotional scenes are fine, but a War Novel needs action. Other than that small detail, I believe this is some of the best work I have ever read. Kudos to John Knowles for the twist ending!
Rating: Summary: A Separate Peace is a tale of growing up Review: Two boys struggle with maturity and growing up in John Knowles A Separate Peace. Phineas will do anything for his best friend Gene. Gene feels threatened by Phineas affability though. These feeling lead to Gene causing Phineas to fall from a tree and shattr the bone in his leg. This break leads to Phineas ultimate death. I found this book very enlightening of the teenage mind and mentality. John Knowles insight on the teenage mind would have led me to believe he still was one, if it had not been for his developed but efficient writing style. The story and the writing made this book very enjoyable reading.
Rating: Summary: Illustrates the conflict and guilt contained in a friendship Review: In A Separate Peace, John Knowles illustrates jealousy and conflict in its cruelest form through the friendship of two high school students. Knowles evelops the character extremely well by describing an inner hatred contained in the narrator. I enjoyed A Separate Peace for its reality and description of life during World War II. A separate peace did not contain much "action." However, I believe that I enjoyed the book for its subtle conflict and symbolism throughout the story. The author used the characters to show how bitter a friendship can be. The book impacted me in many ways and I recommend A Separate Peace to anyone interested in the novel.
Rating: Summary: A Seperate Peace is an interesting and well-written novel. Review: A Separate Peace by John Knowles is a well-written novel. It is set during World War II at an exclusive New England prep school, and the main characters are two sixteen-year-old boys on the verge of going off to war. The characters of Gene and Phineas are very well developed and outstanding examples of characterization. Knowles also does a wonderful job adding symbolism and many different themes throughout the novel. I thought that the story was easy to follow and very entertaining.
Rating: Summary: An Average Book Review: A Separate Peace is unlike any book I have read. I'm not sure what I think about this novel. The amount of emotional and subjective action to keep up with could be overwhelming at times. The majority of the action in this book seems like it was all in Gene's head. Reading this book was a new experience for me, which is good. I'm glad a read the book, although I would not recommend it to others.
Rating: Summary: Not bad for a school book! Review: This book was probably the best book I have read in school, like the other reviews said, it was quite slow at times but in a few chapters you really get into it! I wont tell you what happens that gets you so angry you want to kick the narrators a**, but it is a pretty good book, you shoud give it a try!Plus alot of people can relate to it if you have a best friend( I mean a REAL best friend) with that love-hate relationship happing between you, just like Gene and Finny in the book, I recommend it!
Rating: Summary: If you're not being forced to read this, DON'T. Review: After reading this book and realizing it was required in many American schools, I had to wonder what was coming to the world. How can any decent school subject their students to this piece of trash? This was a horrible novel! Knowels use of first person through Gene should have made me feel closer to this character, but did not succeed. Instead it gave me a feeling of disconnectedness from other characters and made me truly feel like an outsider looking in, and wishing desperatly to turn away. This book was not only easy to put down, it was hard to pick back up again. Although difficult I succeeded in completing the novel. Throughout the entire story, the plot had seemed basic and annoyingly predictable. It seems as though Knowels threw Finny's death in at the end of the book not for closure, but as a vain attempt to convince the reader that they cannot see through the story. This was a waste of my time.
Rating: Summary: it was bad Review: i didn't like the book i thought it was boring. i don't like reading books that are about the old days and the war. one of my teachers made me read it for school and i didn;t like reading it. i felt it was hard to understand.
Rating: Summary: Good book overall Review: i had to read this book as required reading in 10th grade, and although kids are supposed to hate what they're forced to read, i really didn't mind it much. in fact, i (secretly) liked it a lot. there were some slow parts, but overall this book was really good. you should give it a try.
