Rating: Summary: Great book for 10 years+ Review: Wilson Rawls has the mind of a great writer, this and his other book Summer of the Monkeys both take place in the Oklahoma Ozarks around the time of the depression. I'm pretty sure this is a fictional autobiography of his life. I am a 7th grade stundent from Massachusetts and would recommend this book to any 10 year-old to a 50 year-old. I am in the midst of writing an essay of this novel about Billy and his dogs' unique bond of love. I have not yet seen the movie and do not intend to (I generally don't like watching a movie after I've read it's book).
Rating: Summary: Favorite Book Review: I read this book when I was in 5th grade. I am now in my 30's. I would recommend this book to kids and adults alike. This story of determination, hard work, love, devotion, happiness and sorrow can teach us many things and bring us back to moral values. And it's not a bad story either. Beware: You will need a box of kleenex when reading this book.I positively, absolutely loved it.
Rating: Summary: One of my favorite books! Review: Where The Red Fern Grows has been my favorite books since I read it. It tells the story about a boy who wants two hunting dogs more than anything thing in the whole world. Billy wants these dogs so bad and the only way he can get them is by saving the money all by himself... He gets a nickle and sometimes a dime buy selling things to the fishermen and picking berries for his Grandpa's store. It takes him a long, long time to save up the money but when he counts fifty dollars worth of change in his old can after two long years of saving every penny he rushes to his Grandpa's store to have him put in order in for two little red hunting pups. When Billy first lays on the little pups he is so overcome with emotion but the pups trot right up to him begging for attention and right at that moment a very special relationship was formed that even the angels of heaven reconized. I would recommend this book to anyone, boy, girl, adult, child, teenager anyone who wants to read a great book! You won't ever forget this touching story of Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann and their abounding love for each other!
Rating: Summary: Exciting novel Review: Where the Red Fern Grows In spite of being labeled as a sad sob story, Where the Red Fern Grows is a priceless novel filled with adventure and excitement. I believe that Rawls uses the two dogs Old Dan and Little Ann plus the emotional ending of the novel to attract the female gender. But to the same affect attracts the males with the adventures that these dynamic three undergo. Billy, a young boy, whose had a dream of owning a pair of coon hunting dogs. Works two long years of backbreaking work to finally raising enough money to purchase the two dogs. He embraces the dogs as if they are his children, working with them none stop so that they could become the very best coon-hunting team in Cherokee county. A lot of the time this book is required reading for many middle school students. So I believe Rawls uses this never give up attitude to encourage the young readers. After working so hard and accomplishing many goals with the dogs Billy enters a competition and wins. Thrilled with his accomplishment he ventures to other events. First place after first place Billy and the team seek higher standards. As you read, we follow the threesome on an adventure of a lifetime. Traveling on foot Billy and his two dogs head to the Tournament of tournaments the Coon Hunting Championship. Billy, unknowing of the dangers of the journey, runs into a little trouble on the way. As the book slows down and almost loses readers, this journey to the championship keeps us into it. Fortunately the team arrives in one piece and enters the competition. The team wins but to Billy's surprise the dogs aren't satisfied. Because they still have one coon to get, Shadow, the coon that cannot be caught. Rawl takes us on an adventure, and yet again has you sitting at the edge of your seat.
Rating: Summary: TISSUES, ANYONE?!?! Review: I read this book several years ago and it still remains probably my favorite book. As an animal lover, I was already biased towards the story, but I don't think I've ever cried sooooo hard at a story(except for the Green Mile). I was deeply moved and tremendously saddened. It may be a trite circumstance---a boy and his dog(s): think Old Yeller, Sounder, and My Dog Skip, but this novel is by far the best. The relationship that the boy develops with Old Dan and Little Anne is often humorous, but indentifiable and understandable. I highly recommend this book to not only kids, but to teachers, adults, and anyone looking for an emotional, heart-wrenching tale of love, friendship, and courage.
Rating: Summary: A can't put it down book Review: This book is truely amazing! a boy wants two hound dogs so bad that he works two years so that he can afford two hound dog puppies. not only is that amazing, but he goes on adventures that are so real! as soon as i started reading this book I couldn't put it down! I would recomend this book to ANYBODY!
Rating: Summary: A Great Book For Middle Schoolers Review: This book is about young Billy Coleman. He lives in the Ozark Mountains. What he wants most in the world is two coon hounds. His family cannot afford to buy them for him so he starts raising money by working. He works for two years to get enough to buy the dogs. He sends the money off and waits for weeks to hear when the dogs will arrive from Kentucky. The dogs are sent to a nearby town and he has to sneak off to pick them up. He has a female and one male. He names them Old Dan and Little Ann. He spends many hours a day training them to be hunting dogs. They have many exciting adventures together. When Old Dan is attacked by a mountain lion and killed, Little Ann is very lonely and will not eat. She dies shortly after of starvation. The book gets it's name because after the dogs had been buried side by side Billy went to visit the graves and there was a red fern growing inbetween. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Great book! One of my favorites! Review: I read this book in 7th grade and it was probably my favorite out of all the ones I read that year. This book is well-written, and descriptive. The ending is bittersweet, sad but with kind of a special touch that could be called happy or sentimental. This is a very good book and I really enjoyed it. It takes you through Billy's efforts to get himself to good hunting dogs. When he finally receives the dogs, the bond between them is unshakable. The entire middle section of the book is almost only Billy, Old Dan, and Little Ann. Old Dan and Little Ann are loyal to each other and Billy, and Billy loves them more than anything else. The three of them become extremely close and they take you through their time together. This book is very emotional, but great. No matter what books you like, or what kind of a person you are, this book will bring out the "softie" in you. It is a great book and I recommend it for everyone.

Rating: Summary: A surprising treat for any age Review: I wasn't very enthusiastic about reading this book but I haad to fora class and it is now one of my favorite books. This not just Tom Sawyer with a few dogs; this is a funny, moving with a wonderful flow. Many people don't want to read it but read at least the first 2 chapters and you will be hooked. I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more, then I cried again (this was the first time I have ever cried in a book; and I even cried two times!). Appropriate for any age and gender. I love this book!
