Rating: Summary: A Nice Blend of the Familiar with the Unusual Review: Eoin Colfer took something very familiar, gave it a twist, and ran with it. The result is a very original, hard-to-put-down adventure for all ages.Artemis Fowl is a brilliant, yet criminal 12-year old. He comes from a dysfunctional family, has a loyal servant, and a mind that never relents from his one goal: restoring the family fortune, at the expense of all-out war between the human and fairy worlds. Kids know all about fairies, trolls, leprechauns, and the like, but nothing they've learned from bedtime stories will prepare them for ARTEMIS FOWL. This book is so unusual, so unpredictable, that explaining the plot would be pointless. In fact, the less you know going into the book, the better. Just jump right in and enjoy...regardless of your age. 280 pages
Rating: Summary: A Wonderful Book! Review: Theresa Smith Nov. 24, 2003 Do you believe in fairies? Well by the time you are done reading this wonderful book you might. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer is a story about a twelve year old mastermind genius who is living up to the family name as a criminal. When Artemis decides to get his hands on the fairy bible and kidnap a fairy, he doesn't know what he has got his hands into. The fairy Artemis kidnaps is a LEP or Power Elements Police recon officer named Holly Short. She has used up all her magic and now she must go and do a ritual to restore her power. When she does go she doesn't get to finish the ritual because that is when Artemis Fowl kidnaps her and holds her up for ransom. A ransom of one ton of twenty four carat gold nuggets. This story shows how far the fairies will go to keep peace between the humans and fairies and to save an officer. This story takes place mostly in the Fowl Manor where Artemis, his mother, the butler, and the butler's sister live. The story takes place mostly at night. The genre is fantasy because it involves fairies and trolls. As well as stuff that just can't be true like a time stopping device. This book rocks!!!!! The best part was the author was so descriptive that when I read Artemis Fowl I was taken into the story like I was there. I saw what Artemis saw, I heard what Holly heard, and I felt what all the characters felt. It was like I was reading a diary of what had happened. I recommend this book to anyone who loves nonstop action, mystery, and fantasy. This story was such a page turner because the author hooked you at the end of each chapter and the more you read the more you had to keep going. The concentration on this story was very easy because it just sweeps you away and it is easy to start back up where you left off. I connected to Holly because I think like she does and I think I would do the same things she did in her position. This genre is very different from what I usually read but now I am going to read the whole Artemis Fowl trilogy. I think just being able to imagine the whole story made me really love the fantasy genre. The best part was it was so different then things that I usually read. I enjoyed the style of writing because you got to see both view points. Like when Holly is yelling at Artemis the book shows her rage and Artemis's feelings as she yells at him. Probably the biggest surprise is what happens in the end. What Artemis wished for in the end kind of proves you wrong, like you think you know the character but the end shows you a whole different side to Artemis. Every chapter ended with a cliff hanging moment like the whole waling ship blew up and the captain made it out in the least bit of time. My mind did wander but not in a bad way. My mind, I think was telling me slow down, don't read so fast. The plot was very unbelievable because it is so away. Like so dreamy and fantasy that it just doesn't seem real. Your taken in to an imaginary world and the story seems to guide you along. I think if you love fantasy and can imagine, this story was written for you.
Rating: Summary: Fictional-Fantasy and Action ! Review: I read this book along with my 9 year old son. To my surprise, he LOVED this book. I thought it might be a bit 'advanced reading' for him...so what does a mother know?! Some of the words he didn't understand, so I had him look them up in the dictionary, but that didn't deter him! I've read where Artemis Fowl has been compared as a copy-cat of Harry Potter...but Harry uses magic - Artemis uses his brain! My son has asked me to buy him the next two books in the series so he can keep up with the adventures of Artemis, which I definitely intend to do!
Rating: Summary: A Thrilling Fairy Tale Review: ARTEMIS FOWL is by Eoin Colfer is one of the best fairy tales I have ever read. ARTEMIS FOWL is about 12-year old criminal genuis Artemis Fowl. Captain Holly,of the Leprechaun police is captured by Artemis who plans to kepp her until her team arrives. Unknown to him, in the fairy underworld, the Leprechaun police find's out Artemis's plot and sends some other creatures to get back Holly. A big battle sets on in the fairy underworld with more fairies and trolls.
Rating: Summary: lots o fun Review: This is a different sort of book. It is a children's novel, but it is just as enjoyable for an adult to read (much like Harry Potter). Rather than being the typical sort of fairy tale, this one twists the whole convention. There are fairies, sprites, dwarves, and goblins, but not quite as we know them. The time period is the present day and we see the interaction between the species of fairy and human. There are guns, magic, and a whole lot of adventure in this book. What sets Artemis Fowl is the title character. He is the protagonist (mostly), but he is also the villain. Artemis is a 12 year old master criminal trying to rob the fairies of their gold. How this all comes about is a joy to read, and is highly creative. This is a fast paced book and it was a lot of fun to read. Please look past the children's/young adult label" and give this one a shot.
Rating: Summary: ARTEMIS FOWL IS A TRUE MASTERPIECE! Review: As a 12-year-old criminal mastermind tries to restore his family's fortune, he encounters several challenges, like fairies and trolls! Full of unexpected turns and suspense, Artemis Fowl is sure to delight young readers everywhere!
Rating: Summary: There are no sympathetic characters Review: I thought this would be a good series to read, since it dealt with a young boy and the world of magic (and we were all hot in the grip of Harry Potter #5 when I bought it). However, this book is very disappointing. None of the characters stands out as likeable (either in a "gee, I really like this person" or a "gee, what a great villain") way, and the fact that Artemis seems to be out to infiltrate/irritate/rob/otherwise harm the magical world doesn't make for a good plot in my opinion. He seems like a Draco Malfoy without restraints (if you will pardon me referencing the Potter books again). The story was also a little bit coy, with terms like "Lower Elements Police RECON" becoming the term "LEPrecon" and such. I finished the book out of a dogged sense of persistence, but since there was nothing in it to interest me, I won't be carrying on with the series.
Rating: Summary: Well, Review: Okay this is about the stupidest book out there. First of all it seems as if the main character is the villian. Secondly the Faeries are little 'high-tech' fairies. Yes, Faeries are one thing, and fairies are another. Oh boy, could it get any more boring to read? Yes, when I started reading this I thought I could get past the boring beginning, but it went on until the end. It is not fantasy, it is not sci-fi, it is STUPID. This is more annoying than the 5th Harry Potter book! Which may I say, dishoners dragons and magic, and has a bratty teenager in it, muh like our friend Artemis with the latter. Artemis can dishoner its own things, like Faeries. And they have guns. Oh Cool! Magical little leprecauns with guns! This book is much safer closed.
Rating: Summary: Hard to put down Review: I read Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer. The book had a lot of fantasy in it. It was a good book. I choose it because it had a way of grabbing you in with the cover. This is the first in the series of books by Eoin Colfer. The whole setting of the story was in Fowl manor, the house where Artemis lives, it has housed the Fowl's for hundreds of years. Captain Holly Short of the LEP recon was kidnapped by Artemis. The book tells you how the LEP recon got her back. Commander Root leads some recon men into battle but all of them are killed by Butler. They give Artemis what he wants and get her back. This was a great book. I liked it because Butler was cool. Also how Artemis likes to steal fairy gold. I would recommend this book to any one who loves, adventure and a little gore.
Rating: Summary: Golden Pages Review: Twelve year old Artemis Fowl is the biggest criminal of the century, who loves adventures and devising unbeatable plans. He and his sidekicks, Butler and Juliet, will have to use their wits in order to get the fairy gold, "The Book," and evade the inescapable Bio-Bomb. Artemis gets into hot water when he kidnaps one of the LEPrecon (Lower Elements Police) officers, known as Captain Holly Short. This aggravates the head LEPrecon officer, Captain Root, who will stop at nothing to get his officer back. The fairies use many different techniques to get her back. All their efforts will fail unless Artemis receives a ransom of some 24 carat gold ingots. Once he is in possession of the gold, he will return the officer. The ransom is delivered but the fairies still release the Bio-Bomb. Miraculously, Butler, Artemis and Juliet all survive, but how? Well, of course Artemis planned this, and had put sleeping pills in all their drinks when they were celebrating the gold they received. As a tradition from "The Book", Artemis and Butler are left alone and keep the gold. This book was amazing. It kept my curiousity at high levels, and made me take guesses on what was going to happen next. The reason why I gave this book five stars, is because it flows very well, and the author made me feel as if I was Artemis.
