Rating: Summary: My kids love it, I have reservations Review: I picked up this book for my kids without realizing it was a current "hot" book. It seems to go over well with children in the 9 through 12 age range (and perhaps older) but as a parent I had 2 concerns with it.1) There are many descriptions that detail and perhaps glorify weapons of various kinds as well as related paraphenelia, from rocket-propelled grenades to various kinds of hand guns. 2) In many places I found the writing clumsy or awkward. It just did not appear to me as an example of good writing in any sense, and I have not had this level of distaste for the writing of a childrens book before.
Rating: Summary: Artemis Fowl Review: This book is crass. What else can I say? I only gave it one star for that reason. Reviews should warn, too. And I'm just a teen, not an adult.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant book to buy Review: ¡°Don¡¯t judge a book by it¡¯s cover¡± people say, but I believe in another theory, that the more eye catching the cover is, the better the book is, it seems to me that this shows the publishers are confident this is a book to spend money on the design of the cover, and what¡¯s more eye catching than masses of glitter dazzling before you. Artemis Fowl is a twelve year old human boy, he has a missing father and a delusional mother, and he has devised a plan to restore his family¡¯s fortunes. His plan involves kidnapping a magical creature and holding it for ransom, in other words, the gold at the end of the rainbow. What he gets is Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon Unit, although she¡¯s not armed, she is still dangerous. Artemis can be described as the sort of boy who makes a good character to read about but perhaps not the best person to know. Filled with witty conversations, this book is a joy to read. And so the last comment I¡¯m going to say is: This is the sort of book that makes you read it in one sitting and then regret that you¡¯d finished it so fast.
Rating: Summary: Please don't waste your time or brain Review: Amen to all those who rated this book 1 star because 0 wasn't available. Wish that I had read those reviews before I endured the book.
Rating: Summary: A Great Action Novel Review: Artemis Fowl is about a 12-year-old boy who is not average on any level. First of all, he is a millionaire, second of all, he is a genius and third of all, he is using his genius to be a criminal mastermind! I liked this book a lot for a couple of reasons. Number one, I loved the setup of how Artemis Fowl is so young but so mature and how he is a millionaire and a genius. Number two, I loved the plot of the story, which is that Artemis Fowl kidnaps a fairy (Captain Holly Short of the LEPrecon to be exact). But this kind of fairy is a dangerous fairy that will bring Artemis Fowl the adventures of his lifetime. He captured the fairy looking for 'the book' that all fairies carry around. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure, twists and turns and most of all just a good fantasy plot. Also, this book should be read by somebody that has an active imagination. I think that anyone could and probably would love this book and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Truely wonderful... Review: What a enjoyable read. A fantasy type read that anyone can enjoy. I loved it. It keep me in suspense and couldn't put the book down. I highly recommend it to anyone out there. What fun!
Rating: Summary: Excellent voaculary - extremely well written! Review: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book to my 8 yr. old. He is an avid reader and just wouldn't let me put the book down - very long chapters! The vocabulary is excellent - lots of really good words that my son had never encountered. The story is full of twists and turns and you really don't know what is going to happen next. I have enjoyed it - just as much as Harry Potter and I can't wait to read the sequel to it - Artemis Fowl and the Artic Incident.
Rating: Summary: A video game in book form Review: Ok, it's a page-turner (hence the two stars). But what a shallow, insubstantial book. It's full of leprechauns eagerly sporting high tech weapons, an unscrupulous genius of a 12 year old boy accumulating unimaginable wealth (he's never called evil, but it's apt). Pretty graphic violence perpetuated by a pea-brained troll. Black and white characters of no substance whatsoever (unless you think Artemis' denial of his father's death gives him substance--oh, I see: another book in the making). Why bother with a book? Why not come out with the video game/bad movie and be done with it! Don't compare this to Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings. If you want a book that can carry a plot and has characters with depth read those. If you want dental floss, read Artemis Fowl.
Rating: Summary: Incredible! Review: This has definitely become a cliché in the past years, but I use it as literally as I possibly can here: you cannot put "Artemis Fowl" down. An amazing book full of twists and turns, laugh-out-loud humor, and nail-biting suspense, "Fowl" will please any person looking for a excellent read. With stunningly complex characters that are actually a breeze to relate to, Eoin Colfer paints a world of mystery and action that will keep you fascinated forever. While the Harry Potter series was much more elaborate, the world of "Fowl" is much like our own. "Fowl" also doesn't take itself nearly as seriously as the Harry Potter series, making it easier to read and enjoy. Artemis Fowl, the main character, is a pre-teen criminal mastermind/genius. Born into a long line of crooks, Artemis develops a plan involving the fairy world. They aren't your everyday fairies with magic wands-they pack guns, and have established their own formidable government. Colfer's imagination runs wild, filling every world with vibrant pictures. The world comes to life inside your head, beautifully crafted to please even the most skeptical reader. "Artemis Fowl" is a thrilling book from beginning to end: pick it up, and you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: Faries with a difference Review: Most people would pick up this book and think no! Not another fairy story. In fact it took a lot of persuading before I was convinced it was good enough to buy! To start with the first chapter seemed a bit farsical but as I became immersed in the story to me it became more and more real. It's about twelve year old Artemis Fowl, a criminal mastermind with a thirst for blood. He he bargins with a fairy into letting him look at her magick book and he learns everything there is to know about being a fairy. With his knowledge he plans to blackmail a fortune out of the fairy kingdom but not if commander Holly Short has anything to do with it. This book has everything you need. Sentiment, thrills and suspence keep you on the edge of your seat. Impossible to put down. Brilliant.
