Review: My teenage son shared with me that this book was going to be a great study guide in preparation for the SAT. I was intrigued by his comments so I decided to review the book. Where was this book when I took the SAT in bell bottoms and a T-shirt with the peace sign on it? Thanks Charles ... a book with a "common sense" approach. A must buy for the serious SAT test taker!

Summary: simple minded
Review: ok, now first off i want to let you know who i am so you can understand my review. i took the SAT without any practice and got 630 on verbal. i also got a 4 on the World Literature AP test. Most of the words in this book are elementary. i already knew about 95% of them. If you are in the market for a vocabulary book, i recommend Barron's HOT WORDS for the SATI. The 350 WORDS YOU NEED TO KNOW. Barron's book not only has much harder words, it also explains (somewhat) where the words originated, which helps when you want to decipher a similar word.

Review: Since no one else seemed to mention this in there review, I decided to put it in mine: DON'T BE FOOLED WITH FUNNY PICTURES SCAM. Granted there are some pictures, but with most of the words there is just a paragraph describing a picture. I found this to be very disappointing, and I warn anyone interested to purchase with caution

Review: The idea is defintly a new one but the book falls far short of expectations. The book does have some interesting images, but the stories that are told sometimes become too hard to remember and too tedious. At times it feels as though you are reading a dictionary, and sometimes the idea will click in your head. Overall 2 stars for this book is the most it really deserves.

Summary: The Best Way to Learn Vocabulary
Review: The pneumonic devices in this book are a great way to learn new words, especially if you are reviewing for the SAT, PSAT or another standardized test. For example, the word "abstruse" means difficult to understand. There is a picture of two people, who the author calls the Abbs, who have just received a truce from a rival family. One of the Abbs is saying that he can't understand the truce. Whenever you hear the word in the future, you'll think of the Abbs and their truce and remember the definition! There, if you didn't already know that word, you just learned one! And one final comment... I took the PSAT this past fall and I had trouble with some of the harder vocabulary words. I was looking through the test for words I didn't know, and 3/4 if not more of the words I did not know for the test are in this book.

Review: This book is grrrreat if you're planning on a long term studying for the SAT. Granted you won't remember every single one of the 500 words, if you can just remember a large percentage of them, your verbal SAT score should jump (I got a 1450).

Summary: A fun way to learn 500 words
Review: This intriguing book introduces 500 words commonly found on the SAT and presents unique ways to learn and recall each word. The author provides a sound-alike phrase or short scenario to get the reader to recall sometimes obscure words. Example: A bale of hay about to fall on your head is a "baleful" situation. The accompanying illustration cements it in your mind even more. I used this book in teaching an informal SAT review course and it was well received by the teenage participants.
